Sir Michael Gambon certainly spices up every scene he's in. He's a villain totally and he's like an elephant in a room. Powerful, rude, loud, violent, all things bad bad bad. The baddest of the bad in Luck, so far.

HBO to suspend filming with horses on racing drama ‘Luck’ after 3rd horse fatality

Dahoss 03-13-2012 09:25 PM

That's unfortunate, but this horse didn't die while filming a scene. She reared back while being led to the stable and hit her head on the ground.

A freak accident. Reminds me of what happened to Exogenous before the 2001 Distaff.

Cannon Shell 03-13-2012 09:30 PM

The first two horse deaths drew criticism from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which said that safety guidelines used in filming failed to prevent the deaths “so clearly they were inadequate.”

Good thing they arent against seat belts...

Honu 03-13-2012 09:42 PM

Well perhaps if America Humane would allow lip chains to be used on horses that are high strung or goofy then maybe they wouldnt act up in the street and kill themselves.

Why would they have a say? It is a pretty basic horse industry standard to use lip chains on unruly horses. Appeasing these people never works.

You cannot believe how much say they have in everything. I saw the horse being stupid and jumping around in the street, the guy on the end of the shank had no shot. These horses are being fed and trained like race horses so they are acting like them as well and the stupid azz's from America Humane want to tell the people who actually know what they are doing how to do it.

I was fine with it before, enjoyed it, great racing scenes, etc - but last night was the best, and should really hook viewers that might have been loose on the tether.

Couldn't agree more. Loved it.

This episode was so full of syrup and sap that I will find it hard to rerun..
all this relationship crap..dustin and his creepy lady...escalante getting on with the little boy...the pregnancy thing and the remolding of escalante as a good guy....not for me

Antitrust32 03-14-2012 09:04 AM

maybe the AHA and PETA should spend one day as a claims adjuster for equine insurance. Maybe they'd gain some perspective.

He's terrible in this role. Killing Rain Man's middle man was about as believable as Split Rock's pick 5 tickets.

I wish the producers had balls, so because some PETA morons get mad they cave? I have horses that have reared up and flipped over, maybe I should quit my job. I guess there will no longer be any horse shows or movies, a horse might get hurt. This is so ridiculous, if any of those animal rights wackos REALLY knew horses, they would know they get injured in their stalls, in the pastures, in trailers and just plain walking down the road.

trackrat59 03-14-2012 06:26 PM

Luck Shut Down For Good:eek:

http://www.deadline.com/2012/03/hbos...t-horse-death/

Needless to say, this type of publicity is the last thing this sport needs.

Viewership had decreased to 600,000 - It was a convenient way out of a mess, that's all.

I feel terrible for everyone involved, John Perrotta put what 3 1/2 or 4 years into this project to have it end this way is a damn shame! I know this show has taken plenty of shots on this board, which everyone is entitled to have their views of course. In my opinion this was a quality show, with a group of characters that this household was enjoying following. I think it's terrible that the show will not be around further to see what happens to these characters, cuz in my opinion the show was growing stronger with each episode. I'm am not sure if they had filmed all or any of season 2, but i hope the producers will put together a dvd package with any remaining episodes and release it at some future date.

TouchOfGrey 03-14-2012 07:34 PM

Wondering if they're going to show the remaining two episodes of season one...

Maureen Ryan: Why HBO Was Right To Cancel 'Luck'.

GenuineRisk 03-14-2012 08:24 PM

Well, boo. I liked the show a lot.

And yet, The Life and Times of Tim continues. There is no justice sometimes.

Reading some viewer comments on Yahoo. Most people hated it becuase they could not understand the horse racing jargon, felt the actors were mumbling and it was a topic unrelatable.

Great article; looking forward to the last two first season episodes, and hope HBO repeats all nine and shows the ones that are already "in the can" for the second season.

Milch was on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson the other day. They showed a clip that was almost entirely jargon. Very little in the way of normal vocabulary. There's gotta be a sense of context or characters (I don't mean watching gamblers mid-gamble). Show Nolte or Hoffman who have other things going on and are, frankly, more famous draws. Hit newbies with the other stuff when they watch the show. I remember thinking that if I weren't already a fan of the sport, that clip would turn me off of trying to start watching Luck. It's dry when you just read out a string of wagers. It makes it sound like you're reading a math equation. Really bad idea to show it and expect anyone to go 'sign me up for that.' I really thought it was a missed opportunity.

Coach Pants 03-14-2012 11:11 PM

I bet HBO execs tipped PETA off on the third death.

Sounds like they should have done some of those "webisodes" a la True Blood to explain some of the lingo.

I believe it's been cancelled immediately, so no remaining two shows. Or maybe cancelled immediately means production is cancelled and they will show the 2 shows?

I'm not sure

Yeah it was just a bad attempt at entertainment. Just because people have immense talent doesn't mean they can make good art every single time. This show seemed desperate from the start. It's understandable considering how awful the last few projects from Mann have been.
