Hattan springs shock in September Stakes Hattan: was running on the all-weather for the first time since his Winter Derby win at Lingfield in March Peter Scargill HATTAN claimed another valuable all-weather prize by adding the Group 3 September Stakes to his victory in the Winter Derby in March. With no obvious pace setter in thefield Tom Queally reluctantly took the runners along aboard recent course winner Many Volumes. But it was a pedestrian pace and his 11 opponents were all stacking up behind him as they exited the final bend into the straight. Neil Callan, replacingMartin Dwyer, shot 16-1 chance Hattan up the inside as the rail fell away and galvinsed by the first time visor ran on well to defeat fast finishing 33-1 outsider Illustrious Blue. The pair were clear of Mourilyan who just got up to pip Many Volumes for third at 12-1 on his first start for Gary Moore. Callan said: "He's isn't getting any younger and Clive's done well to keep him going. "He got a nice pitch and got his split up the rail and really stuck his neck out at the end. Fairdo's to the lad." |
Breederscup dreamers
From those girls at superfecta: :p
Monday, September 08, 2008 A Muddy Mile Picture ![]() There were no obvious excuses for Kip Deville in the Woodbine Mile; he's run well on soft courses before (notably last year at Monmouth). Perhaps there's new feed at the Dutrow barn, who can say? The other question coming out of the race is whether Rahy's Attorney will use his Win and You're In berth for the Breeders' Cup -- as he's not nominated, it would still cost his connections a rather large sum of money to get him to the starting gate. Kentucky-bred but well-traveled mare Ventura also put in a notable effort to finish second. It was not a great weekend for Aiden O'Brien; beyond Henrythenavigator's defeat at Longchamp, he scratched Duke of Marmalade from the Irish Champion Stakes (easily won by rival New Approach) and Halfway to Heaven was soundly defeated by Lush Lashes (like New Approach, she is trained by Jim Bolger) in the Coolmore Fusaichi Pegasus Matron Stakes -- so he's still a few Group 1 wins away from the record. The main feature of the Prix du Moulin was the rivalry between Goldikova and Darjina, with both classy fillies putting in fine efforts. Goldikova has some options for the Breeders' Cup, according to her trainer, Freddie Head: 'I knew she was well and ready to run a big race. She was against the colts for the first time and I wasn't certain she could win but I was certain of her well-being and quality. There's another reason to head to California -- that way she avoids another matchup with Zarkava, who has already beaten her twice. Zarkava is still aiming for the Arc and had an encouraging workout recently. There is some thought that Henrythenavigator will aim for the Breeders' Cup Mile (instead of the Classic, as had been suggested earlier), while Duke of Marmalade may try for the Classic. Here's hoping Darjina heads stateside as well - it would be great to see her renew her rivalry with Goldikova in a time zone I can stay awake for (just). Posted by Superfecta at 12:12 PM ![]() |

(no author listed) ARCHIPENKO AND EAGLE MOUNTAIN TO GALLOP Trainer Mike De Kock's charges Eagle Mountain and Archipenko are set to gallop at Newmarket Racecourse this Saturday, September 13. Eagle Mountain has not been seen out in competitive action since finishing second in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes last October. The Rock Of Gibraltar four-year-old is now being prepared for another race at The NatWest Rowley Mile course. He is being targeted at the Group Three Nayef Joel Stakes on Friday, October 3. Archipenko is also in line for a big-race assignment at the Course of Champions. He is scheduled to have a crack at the £375,000 Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, run on Champions Day, Saturday, October 18. The Kingmambo colt's last start was in the Arlington Million in which he was a narrowly-beaten runner-up. Jockey Kevin Shea will be on hand to ride in the work this Saturday, which takes place at 7.30am, while two other De Kock-trained horses will also gallop. |

A European Breeders' Cup Preview
![]() Speaking of new surfaces, Duke of Marmalade may become one of the first high-profile stars to take to the track at the new Great Leighs racecourse - that's if he skips the Arc, of course. The track will be staging a Breeders' Cup 'trials' card on the 27th and it seems they have earned the support of the Breeders' Cup organization, after a long-delayed opening for the new facility and its all-weather track. The Saturday evening event will be broadcast in the US on TVG. (And yes, this is the first I've heard about it as well). It seems that the new surface at Santa Anita and the chance to earn world bragging rights may indeed prove a strong pull for the European contingent: This in turn raises the distinct possibility that four of the top six horses in the world on ratings - Duke Of Marmalade, Curlin, Big Brown and New Approach - could line up for the same event, with the winner emerging as a true global champion.I will be particularly intrigued if New Approach does come to California; he's been somewhat overlooked, given the sheer number of stars Ballydoyle is turning out and the ongoing Big Brown/Curlin trash talking, but the Jim Bolger trainee may be the most versatile horse in the bunch: Fact is, of course, New Approach already has the perfect CV for the modern stallion. Four times a Group One winner, champion juvenile and a Derby winner, who has won from seven furlongs to a mile and a half. A win on an artificial surface would be the icing on the cake. One would also hope he would remain in training beyond the autumn as well; he may have been a champion at two and been outstanding this year, but he still only has seven lifetime starts. This year's 3-year-old crop in Europe (including fillies Zarkava and Goldikova) seems to be as deep as the North American (male) version is weak; it's going to be an interesting showdown if all the top names all ship over. Programme released for 2009 DIRC The Dubai Racing Club has released the programme for the 2009 Dubai International Racing Carnival introducing two new divisions of races to further strengthen its global appeal. The US$175,000 Listed DRC Gold Cup over 3,200m on the turf rejoins the racing calendar on Thursday, February 26 at Nad Al Sheba while the inaugural US$150,000 Meydan Classic, a turf race for three-year-olds, will be added to the Super Thursday programme on March 6. Lead-up races have also been written to complement the new events. In addition to the new races, five races have been upgraded in status and given an increase in prize-money. They are; • Dubai City of Gold now Group 2 and increased to US$250,000 • Cape Verdi now Group 3 and increased to US$200,000 • Balanchine now Group 3 and increased to US$200,000 • Al Quoz Sprint now Group 3 and increased to US$200,000 • Zabeel Mile now Group 3 and increased to US$200,000 The Listed Al Bastakiya has also had a prize-money increase to US$250,000. “The core base of the Carnival, the rated handicaps, remain as they have been what the Carnival has built its success on and the new races give us the chance to continue to improve and provide more opportunities to owners and trainers who may have horses that could have been unsuited in the past,” said Martin Talty, Dubai Racing Club’s International Department Manager. “The strength of the Carnival is in those that come to compete and on that evidence it is clear that the Carnival has been a success. The upgrade of four of races to Group 3 and the rise of the Dubai City of Gold to Group 2 merely emphasizes the quality of horses that now come to Dubai in the first quarter of the year. ” “2008 was the strongest we have seen, Honour Devil, Jay Peg, Sun Classique and Curlin all had a Carnival campaign before going on to Dubai World Cup success while Archipenko also proved himself at Group 1 level internationally but we have to look to improve on that.” “The structure of the Carnival has shown itself to work and the new races we have introduced merely add to the growth we have in mind. They give us two new divisions of races and we now have races for all types of horses from three-year-olds and upwards.” The Dubai International Racing Carnival begins at Nad Al Sheba racecourse on January 15 and culminates with the Dubai World Cup meeting on March 28 with prize-money totalling in excess of US$30,500,000. |

Wallace said on Wednesday: "He is going to have a break and then he is going to go to Kevin Ryan. He will have a couple of runs next year, they will give him another go." |

The eight-year-old daughter of Cape Cross, who was a week overdue, will now travel to Kiltinan Stud in Ireland to visit last season's champion sire Galileo. According to Peter Stanley of Stanley House Stud, where the mare boards, Ouija Board is doing well. "She's a great mother, very sensible,"he said. "It was a straightforward foaling. The colt weighs 50kg and is a very nice, correct sort with a strong character." Lord Derby's homebred mare retired at the end of the 2006 season following a brilliant career which yielded ten wins including seven at the highest level. Among her most memorable victories was a seven length annihilation of the 2004 Oaks field and two renewals of the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Ouija Board's first foal is a colt by Kingmambo, who is likely to be retained by Lord Derby. |

Sad news, from Racing Post...
Injured champ Adlerflug faces early retirement By David Conolly-Smith4.06PM 27 MAY 2009 GERMAN champion Adlerflug has almost certainly run his last race after fracturing a cannon bone while working on Tuesday morning. A team of surgeons were flown over from Newmarket to operate on the In The Wings five-year-old in Germany on Wednesday afternoon. Trained by Jens Hirschberger, Adlerflug won the German Derby in 2007 and finished runner-up in the last two renewals of the Grosser Preis von Baden. On his most recent outing, he narrowly failed to steal second behind Vision d'Etat in the Prix Ganay. He had been an intended runner in Sunday's Group 2 Grand Prix de Chantilly. Peligroso, a Group-winning juvenile for trainer Mario Hofer last November, is set to make his debut for Godolphin after being supplemented for Monday's Group 3 Bavarian Classic at Munich. |
