Soviet Problem.......she was hella fast.

Ok Balleto, just a little tidbit about Terlingua. Wayne always called her "Beefcake". She was muscle on top of muscle. I did not know much about Crimson Saint, but Wayne would sometimes remark that CS passed on her soundness problems to Terlingua. I would spend alot of mornings hosing down her legs after she trained. On the other hand, Pancho had legs like steel pipes. He later developed throat problems which shortened his carear.

I remember Pancho Villa shipping in for the Bay Shore. In those days " D Wayne off the Plane " was gold. He jogged and paid $35.

Hey BTW, i remember when we were cooling out Pancho Villa after finishing 2nd to Phone Trick in that Nw1. Wayne said Alan, were getting the hell away from that Phone Trick, he's the fastest horse in america. Were going to show them New Yorkers what california speed is. I just remembered that because you mentioned D Wayne off the Plane..

That's great. I never realized he was coming in off a loss to Phone Trick. Man, there were some good horses then. I remember when Phone Trick ran at Belmont. He was something.

I believe the late internal fractions were 1:08 flat for six furlongs, 1:19 4/5ths for seven furlongs, and the mile of course was 1:32 4/5ths.

Pine Tree Lane and Jones Time Machine were rockets. I don't recall Cheap Seats as well but she produced the well named Above the Crowd who could run a little.

What A Summer was the first mare I remember really following. She ran everywhere, over anything and carried weight and beat boys. I still have an old TB Record (precursor to the TTimes) with a pic of her winning something in the slop. Great mare...

I forgot Am Capable, she was another Parisella/Sabarese mare that could run.

I actually threw away money on that beast the other night.

I don't think Lady's Secret was mentioned until post 81? I know her career didn't end well but she was damn tough when she was right.

I always though Personal Ensign was the best filly I ever saw without a doubt, but ladys Secret was a damn close 2nd.

Fastest as far as sprinting or overall ???? Sprint mares not mentioned of merit are My Juliet---which gave Bold Forbes a drubbing at 7 furlongs and the sixties star Affectionately ... For overall speed, one not mentioned was Bug Brush which beat top drawer males over 9 furlongs in record time in California . Go For Wand and Lady's Secrest also got my nods for speed and versatility .

In recent years, Madcap Escapade could really rock. She was beautiful to watch also. Had a great style -- she ran with that flowing yet reckless abandon style.

read most of the thread and my racing history only goes back 10 years and since no1 respected her from the time she walked through the sales ring and only sold for 5k im gonna mention XTRA HEAT=) yes she was extremely fast but she had so much guts and heart out there on the track and exhibited such as somebody mentioned against the boys in the BC. i wonder how many people to the day are still kicking themselves in the rear for passing on her when she walked through the ring

Exactly, and when they turned for home I thought come on Snow Chief, there was no way in my mind he couldn't catch the filly with the fractions she set, than it became quite obvious Melair was not quitting, and the crowd started to clap and cheer her on home, it was a very poignant memory because everyone knew we had seen something very special. I ran to get a good look at Melair, she was so full of herself even after the race, just had a great air about herself. I don't believe she ever ran again though.

I also remember another fleeting fast and shortlived filly named Creme Brulee, do you remember her? I think she was owned by Klugman?

A lot of people don't realize that she actually was sold at auction three different times....and never once brought more than four figures!

* She sold as a weanling at KEE Nov for $9,100

* She sold as a yearling at OBS August for $4,700

and...

* She sold as a 2yo in training at the Fasig-Tipton May sale for just $5,000


After selling for a nickle in May of her 2yo season, she went on to win 8-of-9 starts that year...including 7 stake wins. Her only loss, was the only time she ever routed, that was in the Breeders Cup Juvie Fillies. She actually missed the break that day and was rated off-the-pace.

She was a real amazing horse! I, along with many other competent handicappers, were not that impressed with her as late as the middle point of her 3yo season. I was convinced Victory Ride would totally embarass her in the Test Stakes. I made what might have been my biggest win bet of the entire meet on Victory Ride that day.

It was one of those instances, where I got to make some nice coin but my opinion was absolutely not validated on the track. Xtra Heat won a sensational three-way pace battle through unrealisticly fast fractions, while Victory Ride got a lovely stalk-n-go trip from a great tactical position.

VR had to work hard to wear her down, and Xtra Heat really didn't give in until the final 1/16th. I went from very Anti-XH, to a big fan of hers of the basis of that one losing effort.

Interestingly enough---quite a few handicappers thought the 3rd place finisher, I believe it was Nasty Storm, was the real "trip horse" coming out of that race. Because, she totally blew the brake...and was moving best late, thanks to the brutal early pace in that race.

I also believe Orientate broke his maiden on the same card that day.

I know the Klugman's had a filly named Akinemod who looked freakishly good in a couple of her wins. I have a friend who is a big fan of hers.

She ran a 119 Beyer in one of her wins.
