Yeah, I'm not trying to be dramatic, I just haven't done them yet. I always do weekend numbers on Monday and Tuesday when it is slow.

I never do Delaware so that is not accounting for any quirks they may have in their specific distances. Also, I think you'll agree the 5F race and the 3 horse 9F off the turfer are pretty useless in determining the rest of the card.

We were both unfairly used in that comparison. You more so than me.

Most people would be shocked how often this is done. It only comes up in big races, but it happens a lot. The timers suck at most tracks. Run ups play a big part. The technology is there to fix these things, but the money is not.

I don't personally use Beyers, but I do make my own numbers and understand the complexities involved. I do agree about leaving obvious extreme pace scenario (fast or slow) figures alone, but Beyer doesn't so that is that. They are his figures to do what he pleases.

In this case, however, I don't think pace was even remotely an issue. It was either track maintenance or a bad clocking. It really doesn't matter which, or even if it was something else.

Ok, this is possibly a very dumb question, but I was at Delaware so know what the weather was like. It was raining pretty hard in the morning, stopped a race or two before Blind Luck's race, came pouring back down when they came to the paddock for the Oaks and the sun came out just after the Oaks and it got "steamy" for a lack of a better word...can that change a surface much?

Definitely.....and it most likely did. Thanks. Good info.

This thread was painful to read.

Phil - tell me you're kidding about being okay with Havre De Grace getting a 115 and Derwin's Star getting a 112 in the same race?

MISTERGEE 07-12-2010 05:59 PM

I posted what I thought the number should be- a 105, with an 87 and 90 for the other two stakes.

The Indomitable DrugS 07-12-2010 07:12 PM

Phil ... why would the number matter at all unless someone is paying you to make them for every race?

Those weren't exactly ideal conditions for figure making.

In that vein- what I say doesn't mean anything in the end, since I don't get paid for it. But those that make figures for the DRF, the largest and most important racing rag in the country, have an obligation to their readers to publish what they believe to be the most accurate figure possible since people DO pay for the information- just like the chart caller has the obligation to truthfully report the lengths beaten, etc.
If they feel that 94 is the right number, so be it. No argument that it was a challenging day. However, in my humble opinion, they have missed the boat here.

The charts at DEL are just about the worst in terms of accuracy that I've seen. I mean seriously bad. Worse than AP, even.

Anybody know what Nicanor pulled? Shame that race came off the turf. He tried to gut it out. Not raced on dirt in awhile has he? I heard he's got a stubborn streak. Maybe slowing him down on the lead isn't a good thing. Just let him go.

90 for Nicanor in the Sussex.

Sightseek 07-14-2010 12:05 PM

Nicanor did something to a front leg or hoof during the running. Lots of looking down at it when he returned to be unsaddled.
