Strong entries for Lightning
(no author listed)

Tuesday, 29 January 2008: The first of the feature autumn sprints gets underway at Flemington on Saturday where the Group 1 Lightning Stakes has drawn together a superb line-up.

The Coolmore Lightning Stakes is Australia's only Group 1 1000 metre race and in recent years it has become the launching pad for Australian gallopers heading for international glory. Recent winners – Choisir (2003), Takeover Target (2006) and Miss Andretti (2007) – all followed up their Flemington success with victory in the UK.

Among the 11 entries for the $502,500 race are top mares Gold Edition and Miss Finland.

Along with the two headline mares, entries include Magnus and Ticklish who were placed in last year's Lightning behind Miss Andretti, Seppelt Salinger Stakes winner Swick which will be attempting to give trainer Bart Cummings a record 9th win in the race, class galloper Apache Cat and the Lee Freedman-trained Here de Angels.

In-form South Australian sprinter Grand Duals steps up in grade on his recent excellent straight-track form while adding an international flavour is speedy Kiwi mare Ticklish.

Apache Cat Testing Water in Crack Sprint
(no author listed)

Trainer Greg Eurell is cautiously optimistic Apache Cat will measure up against a field of crack sprinters in Saturday's Group One Lightning Stakes at Flemington.
The baldy-faced chestnut adds an element of mystery to the weight-for-age feature as he hasn't raced over the 1000m distance since winning his race debut as a two-year-old in March 2005.

"We have started to tread into unknown waters with him over 1000 metres and against some of the best sprinters in the land," Eurell said.

"It is not going to be an easy battle, especially with the mare (Gold Edition) there, but it is something we thought we would try based on the fact his last couple of preparations he has been good early."

Jockey Corey Brown tested Apache Cat as his Lightning Stakes mount at Tuesday's Cranbourne barrier trials and was pleased with his half length second to stakes winning mare Coniston Gem.

Eurell, however, admitted he would have liked to see the gelding show a bit more sparkle in the 800m hitout which was relatively slow at 46.40s compared to some of the other trials.

"I thought he might have gone a little bit sharper but Corey was very happy with him and said he gave him a good feel," Eurell said.

"Having said that the horse wasn't asked to do much and he pulled up fantastic.

"We tried to leave a little bit in the tank and didn't trial him in his blinkers."

Apache Cat is one of 11 entries for the Lightning which in recent years has become the launching pad for Australian gallopers heading for international glory.

Choisir (2003), Takeover Target (2006) and Miss Andretti (2007) all followed up their Flemington victory with success in England.

Outstanding mares Gold Edition and Miss Finland head the Lightning nominations.

Magnus, who was placed in England last year, and Ticklish return after finishing second and third respectively to Miss Andretti in last year's Lightning.

Group Two Salinger Stakes winner Swick will be attempting to give trainer Bart Cummings a record ninth Lightning Stakes victory while the Lee Freedman-trained Here De Angels, who resumed with a last start win in the Rubiton Stakes, is also entered.

Apache Cat hasn't raced since the spring after having an adverse reaction to an equine influenza vaccination following his second to Marasco in the Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on September 8.

At his other two spring starts he beat Haradasun in the Bletchingly Stakes (1100m) then defeated Marasco in the Liston Stakes (1400m), both at Caulfield in August.

"He wasn't overtaxed with three runs in the spring and this time in we are really expecting him to have a good campaign," Eurell said.

He said that after the Lightning, Apache Cat would target the Group One Australia Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on February 16.

"Whatever he does on Saturday will bounce him into that," Eurell said.

The final Lightning field and barriers will be declared on Wednesday.

Two questions for my Magic man, ed or mooooodwalker.....

The new hormone rule that comes into play..... what do you think? Does it change much for Goldie or for our Miss F?

With Rodd still sick..... tell me about Brown. Has he had the mount on our pretty boy in races before (I know he took him out for a spin the other day but.....)

Thanks!

I guess he's 2nd or 3rd choice right now (cause of the post position?) but i think he can win.....

Be fine if he comes home behind the Divas though.

Godspeed, Apache Cat!

magic_idol 02-01-2008 03:16 PM

You would have to think Gold E will start & deserves to be favorite as she would be the second best sprinter in australia behind Miss A,For the life of me i cant see why miss finland is in at $5 & really dosnt deserve it:confused:
Cat would be the best 1400mtre horse in the country with out a doubt, but this race isnt over 14 its 1000 yes iwill still waste my money on him ;-) u have to hope:rolleyes: , but for me Gold E to win this one
Corey Brown is fine he has ridden the cat before & while dosnt have the big name like darren beadman or D.O he is handy without being remarkable.

The new hormone rule that comes into play..... what do you think? Does it change much for Goldie or for our Miss F?

i dont think it will matter these horses just love to run & u dont need to give them hormones to make them ,its just meant to level the mares out if they are on heat ,works or not i dont know? .Ive seen mares win in heat & others that havnt but its a great excuse if u have a mare & it gets beat .

Apache Cat Wins!!!

my miss storm cat 02-01-2008 11:53 PM

 Apache claims first scalp of autumn features:cool:
Story By Jason Hickson

Saturday, 2 February 2008: Honest sprinter Apache Cat claimed the first major of the autumn carnival and took some big scalps, winning today's Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) down the straight at Flemington.

The popular chestnut with unusual white markings settled well back early as the field track to the outside rail.

Drawing the wrong side of the track, Apache Cat was well away from the rail and off the hot pace set up by Ticklish and Gold Edition.

The short-priced favourite Gold Edition drew to the lead but was quickly under pressure as the challengers loomed up the center of the course.

Heading them was Apache Cat who went on for a fairly soft win for rider Corey Brown to score over Swick, who was even wider, up the center of the track.

Stanzout, whose rider Greg Childs was extremely unbalanced as the grey came out of the gates sideways, turned in a top effort to get home into third.

Gold Edition, although disappointing, did fight on well for fourth while Miss Finland, who was the first under pressure at the half-way mark, came again and worked home well for fifth.

But it was full honours to Apache Cat who enhanced an already superior fresh-up record and landed his second Group 1 success.

“It's incredible – a wonderful effort,” trainer Greg Eurell said.

“It was a tough assignment and I had my reservations about it. He has a great record fresh but not against the horses he was up against so full credit to him.

“He's proven what good horses can do.”

Eurell said Apache Cat would next run in the Group 1 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley in a fortnight before he decides what to do next.

Connections have a myriad of options with the Melbourne autumn carnival races, the Sydney feature races, a Queensland winter campaign and perhaps even an overseas trip on the agenda.

* * *

Damn. Wish there weren't bad news with the good.....

Gold Edition retired
Story By Jason Hickson

Saturday, 2 February 2008: Tough mare Gold Edition has been retired after pulling up lame in today's Group 1 Lightning Stakes at Flemington.

The grey mare, who started an odds-on favourite in today's feature sprint, drew to the lead but was immediately under pressure and finished fourth behind Apache Cat.

Following the race the mare was found to have pulled up lame in the off-side front leg and connections were quick to announce she would spend the rest of her days at stud.

Trainer Ron Maund described training the mare as a “wonderful ride” but there were lows as well as the highs and lots of pressure on the high profile and highly scrutinized galloper.

Owner Kevin O'Brien said he didn't want to take any chances with the mare who would immediately go to the paddock and to stud when she recovers.

The popular grey is only four years old but crammed a lifetime of racing into her three seasons on the track, winning 17 races from 36 starts.

Gold Edition was a two time Group 1 winner and the $22,500 she picked up from running fourth today edged her earnings over the $3 million mark.

APAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACHE!

Cat unbackable in Australia Stakes dash
Story by Gary Crispe

Saturday, 16 February 2008: Top galloper Apache Cat has become so popular punters will be hard pressed to find him a betting proposition, including today's feature Group 1 Timbercorp Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley.

The good looking and seemingly bombproof chestnut:cool: , now into flip of the coin odds for the feature weight-for-age sprint, looks the one to beat and bookmakers know it, happy to keep the screws on the gelding hoping punters will take the short odds.

While she has become somewhat maligned over the last 12 months, Miss Finland might prove the value runner in a moderate version of the race with few genuine weight-for-age performers.

The mare, prepared by David Hayes, hasn't won since her fresh-up run of the spring but that statistic is unfair alone, as she hasn't been out of the top echelon and was tested as a stayer.

The consequences seemed to be she lost her dash but back in today's sprint race she gets the chance to show her excellent turn of foot – which made her such a formidable opponent in easier seasons.

Her best few wins – the Golden Slipper, the Thousand Guineas, the Cadbury Guineas and Memsie Stakes – she displayed a superior turn of foot and hit the line hard from back in the field.

Over 1200m today, there's little doubt she will be among the tailenders but with the rail true and the cambered turn as a launching pad she can be running into the finish.

At Moonee Valley she has raced only twice and both were in Cox Plates, where she was luckless between runners the first time and raced on the pace last year so we have yet to see her charge home there.

But real Miss Finland can step up tomorrow and silence her knockers.

Hayes has opted for a rider change, which in itself won't improve her at all but may prove a masterstroke.

From barrier 11 new rider Steven Arnold will be beaten for early speed but biding his time with cover and poised to hit the camber out wide.

In the straight, when the squibs are shortening stride, there's little doubt she won't be motoring home late.

Her first-up run, over 1000m up the straight at Flemington in the Lightning Stakes, she tried to stay with them and looked under pressure a long way out but knuckled strongly to finish fifth, to her credit beaten just over two lengths by Apache Cat.

Today the extra 200m is ideal, the track should suit as generally the winners will be away from the fence when the rail is true and at the each-way odds she looks a solid bet to be running home into the finish.

There's no doubt Apache Cat is the horse to beat but he may in fact be drawn to disadvantage in barrier two.

Like Miss Finland, he will be drifting back as he won't have the early pace to go with the likes of Dance Hero and Monet Rules.

But as the field bunches jockey Corey Brown will be wanting to get off the fence and rolling into the race, much the same way Miss Andretti did last year before she “drops on them like a bomb” like racecaller Terry Bailey commented.

At even money, and the real prospect he will be needing a run, this may be the race Apache Cat is worth risking.

He has so many things in his favour he has become unbackable. He's genuine, flies early in his campaign, has drawn (seemingly) well, his form at the track is much better than appears and has an in-form jockey and trainer.

It's worth noting only two favourites have won the race in the last 10 years.

Another who looks good odds is the Lee Freedman-trained Sonic Quest.

The leading trainer and jockey Danny Nikolic both predicted a big race win for the lightly-raced gelding after he won the Group 2 Crystal Mile here last spring and their words are worth heeding.

Following that win he raced in the Group 1 Emirates Stakes and in a race full of disappointing runs he ran below his best, finishing eighth behind Tears I Cry.

It's worth noting though he excels fresh, and last campaign scored a big win at Caulfield over this journey beating Stanzout.

He is a winner at his only try at the track, his only try at the distance and has drawn for a good run on the inside for Damien Oliver.

With the right run he can feature in the finish at double figure odds and he is a horse that is expected to be improved this campaign.

Let Go Thommo is an honest sprinter who was a last start track and distance winner over Maldivian.

This is tougher again but he can only be fitter, regular rider Steven King stays aboard and he should be thereabouts again.

Stanzout, with new rider Craig Williams aboard, looks hard to hold out on his run in the Lightning when a fast finishing third.

The extra trip suits and has a good second-up record.

Dance Hero, the likely leader in the race, is obviously far better than his last start last in Listed grade behind Takeover Target.

He worked well at the track on Tuesday and did finish runner-up behind Miss Andretti in one of his two starts at the track in the Manikato Stakes.

He will give a big sight and on his best form will prove hard to catch.
