It's hard to say, the distance is her problem. She's good enough to win over 6 furlongs here, but there are no Takeover Targets or Sakhee's Secrets in NZ. She broke 1:07 winning the Telegraph in January under a massive weight though, if she repeats that performance she'll be hard to beat. She never runs badly, only further back than 6th once in her career.
You know she'll try her heart out - often she tries so hard that she gets major leg cramps for the next day or so after a race. :( |

Yeah, that was when they ran her 7 days after her last race. She made it clear that she didn't like that, never even tried.
|
Winter racing is boring. :( No one wants to see races with horses knee-deep in mud struggling to make it to the finish post. So instead I've uploaded a couple of NZ Derby videos. Worth looking at if you haven't seen them before. :)
1985 NZ Derby: Bonecrusher. 2004 NZ Derby: Xcellent. |
Only a week left in the 2007/08 season. The nominees have been announced for the season's Mercedes Awards...
Stallion O'Reilly, Volksraad, Cape Cross, Keeper I'll give this one to O'Reilly. He sired 51 different winners this season, 11 more than the second-placed Volksraad (who has won this award for I think the last 7 or 8 years). Mare Just Cruising, Palos Verdes, Gin Player, Joie Denise Just Cruising, easy. Dam of G1 winners Seachange and Keepa Cruisin. Apprentice Jockey James McDonald, Samantha Spratt, Danielle Johnson, Craig Grylls James McDonald will win this - 88 wins in his first season. Sam Spratt would have won it though if it hadn't been for her suspensions - interference in G1 races gets you 4 weeks off here, and she had 3 of those. 74 wins for her anyway in 9 months of riding, top effort. Jockey Michael Walker, Gavin McKeon, Lisa Cropp, Chris Johnson Walker, easy. 173 wins, was sure to be the 1st ever to get 200 in a season before his serious injury. He'll still be leading jockey by more than 50. Trainer Mark Walker, Michael Pitman, Mike & Paul Moroney, Stephen McKee Mark Walker will probably win it, but I'd give it to the Moroneys if it was my choice. At the start of this season they probably would have said their 3 best horses in NZ were Xcellent, Jokers Wild and Resolution. 2 of them didn't make it through the year and X won't race again. :( Their 2yos have been awesome this year though so maybe next year will be better for them. People's Choice Alamosa, Bulginbaah, C'est La Guerre, Katy Keen, Nom Du Jeu, Pasta Post, Princess Coup, Seachange, Sir Slick, Xcellent This is decided by an online poll - Seachange leads by about 20% last time I checked. Jumper Nominees to be announced 1 August 2yo Captain Fantastic, Fully Fledged, Il Quello Veloce, Vincent Mangano Il Quello Veloce, probably. 3rd in the G1 Diamond Stakes and then won the G1 Sires Stakes. I think Fully Fledged is better though and will prove it next season. But I also think Kildonan, Altered Image and Siem Reap may be better than all of them. We'll find out soon. 3yo Alamosa, Boundless, C'est La Guerre, Nom du Jeu Alamosa won two G1s against older horses, Nom du Jeu went over to Aussie and kicked their asses, Boundless won our Oaks then went over to Aussie and was unlucky in their Oaks, and C'est La Guerre won the Derby (which included AJC Derby 1-2 Nom du Jeu and Red Ruler) by 4 lengths. Hardest category. I'll go Alamosa. Sprinter Imananabaa, Kay's Awake, Seachange This goes up to 1500m, and Seachange won 3 G1s in that distance range. End of discussion. Middle Distance Alamosa, Princess Coup, Sir Slick, Seachange This is 1501m-2100m. Princess Coup beat Seachange and Sir Slick in the Kelt, probably enough for her to win this award. Stayer Pasta Post, Princess Coup, Spin Around 2101m and further. I'll go for Pasta Post. :D His win in the City of Auckland on New Year's Day was the most impressive by any of these horses all season, against a top field. Horse of the Year This is probably between Princess Coup and Seachange. Really hard choice, Princess Coup had such a good season over in Australia, while Seachange won four G1s and was (in my opinion) unlucky with the weather and gate draws in her overseas adventure. I say Seachange. And lastly, my 5 horses to follow for next season... Kildonan Altered Image Insouciant Red Ruler Pasta Post 2007/08 was an awesome season. 2008/09's gonna be even better. The first G1 of the season, the Mudgway at Hastings, is 37 days away! |

Thanks for the updates! |
Taupo on Wednesday, one of my favourite days of the year. Hardly any prize money, but all the good horses on their way to Hawke's Bay go there because the track is always dry. It will be again this year. :)
Look at this field for only $9500. 1 1023X Keepa Cruisin 4 90 59.0 Stephen McKee, Ardmore 2 1124X Mufhasa 7 88 58.0 Stephen McKee, Ardmore 3 4350X Run Like Al 3 88 58.0 Michael Coleman Mike & Paul Moroney, Matamata 4 8026X Insouciant 6 85 56.5 Opie Bosson Mark Walker, Matamata-Rangiora 5 0116X Lightning McQueen 2 75 54.0 Peter McKay, Matamata 6 X7866 Nosmo King 1 75 54.0 Kenny & Lisa Rae, Ruakaka 7 3190X Onmepatmalone 5 73 54.0 Steven Pinfold, Byerley Park Two G1 winners, Keepa Cruisin and Insouciant! The day also always has some of the best 3yos of the season, for example last year had 1000 Guineas winner Insouciant and also the best 3yo of last season Alamosa winning races. Might be the same this year, but I can't tell you who yet. So many on debut. My plan is to head straight home from Law school, grab a beer and turn on the TV. :D |

Pass me a beer... :) |
Keepa Cruisin is Seachange's little half-sister, who ran second in the 1000 Guineas and then won the Levin Classic - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb_PmX1DsY8
Insouciant won the 1000 Guineas - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71T9pXRwY1s :) |
Thanks ed. Duh! :D
* * * On the good Sir...:cool: http://www.racingandsports.com.au/ra...asp?NID=133030 |
Very tough first race for him, don't think he can win that. He'll be competitive when he gets up over more distance though. :)
|
Quote:
Maybe I'm nuts but i think he can win this one. :) |
Nice sprinter Mufhasa won that Taupo race, excellent performance. Run Like Al was 2nd, Keepa Cruisin 3rd and Insouciant 4th. It looked like those two girls weren't quite fully fit, they'll improve with the run.
Saw some nice 3yos there today. Have a look at this girl, Amaryllis on debut: http://www.dailymotion.com/classicco...maryllis_sport  And this gelding, Sensible Sam: http://www.dailymotion.com/classicco...ible-sam_sport Very nice. |
There's a strong rumour that in the next 24 hours there will be an announcement that the NZ Derby will be worth $3 million. That's about US$2 million.
That's quite a big increase from $700,000 this year! |
The announcement has been made. A bit less than the rumour but I'm still really happy - $2.2 million. :)
|
10 days to go!

Vital King will run under his original name (Izzat). :{>: :D :tro:

Mudgway result:
Fritzy Boy Bulginbaah Prince Kaapstad Awesome performance by the Fritz, his 8th win in only 13 races. I'll post the video tomorrow. |
Can't wait!
Hey ed I heard that Vital King runs Friday instead. If you happen to see anything could you please post it? Thanks! |
Yeah that's right, they decided it would be better to start off in a slightly easier spot before going against the big horses. The $2 million Kelt at the start of October is their main target. That's going to be a great race - Fritzy Boy, Princess Coup, Boundless, Nom du Jeu, Red Ruler, Katy Keen...
Here's the Mudgway: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Msmq0ec5I0 |

No luck for Vital King, sorry. The race was a bit too short for him though, I'm sure he'll do better next time. Nom du Jeu won the race. :)
The highlight of the day was one of the other races though. Have a look at this. Fully Fldeged. Not bad for his first run back, against a couple of stakes-winning older horses carrying the top weight. http://www.dailymotion.com/classicco...-fledged_sport |
Good for FF and yeah didn't expect my boy could beat NDJ.
Any idea where he finished? Thanks! |
10th, but only 6.2 lengths behind the winner.

How's Sir Slick, ed? Is he getting a break now?

I think so...I hope so! Poor guy. :( He hasn't had a break for more than a year!

Class at Hastings tomorrow...as usual!

Fully Fledged will be the favourite, but he's carrying a massive weight here and there's some real talent in this field - especially Dunkerque, Firebolt and Lauaki. If Fully Fledged wins this I'm pretty sure he'll win the 2000 Guineas in November - if he beats them carrying that much more weight, how can they beat him at level weights? Il Quello Veloce was the champion 2yo last season, here she's taking on some very impressive fillies. Amaryllis was awesome in her only race, Juice was impressive last start. Good luck to NDJ and the Princess. Can't wait to see the replay of Fully Fledged winning! (Think he will anyway...) I don't know most of the names in Gold Trial. |
Will post the videos tomorrow, but here are the results:
Race 2: Perky Parrot Lauaki Fully Fledged FF hit the lead just before the turn and kicked away from them, but tired under his weight in the last 100m. Perky Parrot? Who's he? 3yo gelding by Viking Ruler, trained by someone I've never heard of. It was his 3rd start...he was a maiden! He was 26-1. Gold Trail Stakes: Juice Daffodil Il Quello Veloce Juice is the real deal. Awesome performance. Towkay Stakes: Special Mission Beaver Trap Imananabaa Special Mission is a daughter of Towkay and she won the Towkay Stakes! Was her 7th win in 14 starts, really good mare. G1 winner last season. Stoney Bridge Stakes: Princess Coup Nom du Jeu Fritzy Boy The Princess got to $3 million in earnings today. :tro: Awesome performance, was last at the top of the stretch but blew by them. NdJ went ok and Fritz was brave. Can't complain about that race, pretty much perfect. |
Here are the videos now.
First have a look at this one: http://www.dailymotion.com/classicco...lack-oak_sport This is a horse called The Black Oak in Race 1. He's by Pentire, the same sire as Xcellent. He's now 2-for-2, and some people are already comparing him to X! It's way too soon to do that, but he does run his races the same way. So impressive. Now FF's race: http://www.dailymotion.com/classicco...y-parrot_sport Juice in the Gold Trail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htcvVUPmcWo And Princess Coup in the Stoney Bridge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7DuHfRID18 Great day of racing. :D |
Thanks for the vids and cheers to the Princess! Blazing on by indeed!!!

Yeah, it's pretty disgusting. Poor Slick. He's not enjoying it anymore.
If he had been trained by someone better he could have done so much more. |
In happier news...a great guy who actually cares about his horses, Roger James, had 2 impressive debut 3yo winners yesterday.
