DIRC Sale starts tomorrow

The inaugural Dubai International Racing Carnival Sale, part of the revamped annual Emirates Racing Authority Horse in Training Sale, takes place tomorrow.

The Dubai Racing Club and Europe’s leading auction house Tattersalls have entered into a partnership that promises to add a new dimension to the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

Taking place at Nad Al Sheba, there are now 44 horses going under the hammer at the DIRCS, with the Robbie Osborne-trained King Jock and Doug Watson’s duo T-Bird and Arabian Prince additional entries.

King Jock, with a rating of 108, has been a great servant to Irish trainer Robbie Osborne and also a real favourite in the UAE.

The seven-year-old gelding has raced 20 times here, and succeeded four times, including twice at Listed level at Abu Dhabi and also at the 2005 and 2006 Carnival.

Outside of the UAE, the son of Ghazi has won four other times, including the Group 3 Desmond Stakes at The Curragh in 2006.

“This is the first Carnival sale, so we are feeling our way, and the quality of horses on offer will hopefully rise each year, but this looks to be a good platform to launch the sale, which should hopefully appeal to owners all over the world,” said Dubai Racing Club CEO Frank Gabriel Jr.

Brazilian Group 1 winners L’Amico Steve, Evil Knievel and Nepotista are others to look out for, as are the useful sprinter Machinist, Mariol, first past the post in a sprint handicap before being demoted earlier in the Carnival, and Happy Runner, a winner on the opening night of the Carnival.

There are 86 horses entered for the Emirates Racing Authority’s Horses in Training Sale on Wednesday.

The Dubai Racing Club announced last month that from this year, the annual Horses In Training Sale in Dubai will be moved forward and include a DIRC Session whereby horses that have competed at the Carnival can be put up for auction.

The Sale is held at Nad Al Sheba 5pm on Tuesday March 4 and at 3pm Wednesday March 5, preceding the Super Thursday meeting at Nad Al Sheba on March 6.

The good news is King Jock wasn't sold yet, but the bad news is Choctaw nation went for almost nothing... :(

Cameo Appearance By Efficient
Story By Chris Scholtz

Tuesday, 11 March 2008: While Melbourne Cup winner Efficient :) makes a cameo appearance at Flemington on Saturday his younger half brother Guillotine  will attempt to build on his burgeoning reputation at Rosehill.

Efficient will have his first outing since his Melbourne Cup victory in November in the Blamey Stakes at Flemington before he returns to the paddocks ahead of another spring campaign.

Efficient's owner Lloyd Williams said the decision to give the four-year-old only one autumn start is part of his plan to win the Cox Plate- Melbourne Cup double in the spring with the grey.

"I like to dream a bit,” Williams said.

“He will have just the one run and have up to eight weeks out in the paddock as I only have one thing in mind for him in the spring."

Efficient will be ridden by Steven Arnold on Saturday, an ironic reunion with the horse he could have ridden in the Melbourne Cup.

Arnold preferred the Melbourne Cup mount on stablemate Gallic, a subsequent late scratching from Australia's richest race.

He was left to watch Michael Rodd win the Cup on Efficient but gets back on the grey on Saturday as Rodd is still recovering from an illness.

In Sydney trainer David Payne will start Guillotine's AJC Derby campaign in a low class 3YO ratings race over 1500m.

Guillotine was nominated for Saturday's $1 million Golden Rose but the three-year-old does not have sufficient prizemoney to make the final field, a good result for jockey Hugh Bowman.

Bowman is free to ride Guillotine and retain the mount on the Bart Cummings filly Mimi Lebrock in the Golden Rose. Payne will be represented in the Golden Rose by Vecchia Roma (Damien Oliver).

Guillotine, a grey like Efficient, recorded his second win from just five starts when he blitzed older horses by six lengths over 1900m at Rosehill in December.

He is set to follow Saturday's race with starts in the Randwick Guineas, Rosehill Guineas and AJC Derby.

IRISH RAIDER OUT OF LUCK

By Tom Peacock, PA Sport

Robbie Osborne was not left too disheartened despite his Irish raider King Jock finishing last of seven in the Prix du Muguet at Saint-Cloud on Thursday.

The seven-year-old was beaten a shade over six lengths in the Group Two event by the appropriately-named grey Gris De Gris and rider Thierry Thulliez.

King Jock has enabled Osborne to travel the world, having last run in Dubai in February and is likely to return to France next.

"No luck today - he was in about fourth or fifth but he got tired in the last furlong," said Naas-based Osborne.

"The ground was a bit soft and didn't suit him and it was a pretty tough race anyway - I'd have been delighted to finish third or fourth.

"I think there's a Group Three at Longchamp on the 30th of the month that we might take a look at, otherwise there's another Group Three at Chantilly on French Derby day. He's entered in Leopardstown too, but I think we'll probably come back to France."

The other Pattern event on the card was an Oaks trial, the Prix Cleopatre, and went to Christophe Lemaire on the Alain De Royer-Dupre-trained Leo's Starlet. She was stepping in class following successes on the all-weather at Deauville.

HORSE RACING: Viagra supply fails to pep up Kentucky Derby winner’s sex life

Story by REUTERS
Publication Date: 5/2/2008 TOKYO
The Japanese owners of former Kentucky Derby winner War Emblem are struggling to explain why the American thoroughbred has lost his libido.
Even a private harem and a limitless supply of Viagra have failed to pep up the love life of a stallion his handlers freely admit has some personal issues.
“We’ve tried everything,” Nobuo Tsunoda, director of the prestigious Shadai Stallion Station on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, told Reuters.
“You name it we’ve tried it. We had him on Viagra - that didn’t work. I even went into (Sapporo’s) red light district with 300,000 yen in cash and brought back a lot of ‘special’ medicine to try and perk him up.
“It’s very odd. He’s not impotent. He’s just very choosy about his women. He’s more human than animal. Basically he’s a bit of a weirdo.”
War Emblem won the 2002 Kentucky Derby but has had problems in the breeding shed since being sold to the prominent Yoshida racing family for around $17 million later that year.
The 2008 race takes place on Saturday and its winner can expect big fees when he goes to stud. War Emblem has been a disappointment, however. “He’s been in contact with hundreds of mares but has successfully mated with a only a tiny percentage,” said Tsunoda.
“We have him on male hormone injections to see it that will help.”
“It’s not normal,” continued Tsunoda. “A normal stud would climb onto any mare he sees but not him. He’s just doesn’t seem to like sex anymore -- which is odd.”:)

Maraahel with Sir Michael Stoute after winning the Hardwicke Stakes

by David Milnes

MARAAHEL, who completed back-to-back wins in the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot in June for Sir Michael Stoute, is expected to race on at the age of seven in 2008.

Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's eight-time winner is on the market as a stallion prospect, but the owner has yet to receive a good enough offer to retire him.

Winner of nearly £1 million in win and place prize-money, Maraahel won three times last season, including his defeat of Scorpion at Royal Ascot.

The son of Alzao came close to ending his Group 1 losing sequence, which stands at 14, when beaten a short head by stablemate Notnowcato in the Juddmonte International at York in 2006.
Angus Gold, racing manager to Sheikh Hamdan, said: "As it stands we haven't had a good enough offer on Maraahel and it now looks probable that he will stay in training.

"He's wonderfully consistent and Sir Michael Stoute thinks that he would be up to winning again in Group company."

Maraahel would join a strong team of older horses at Freemason Lodge for 2008, as it is also set to include Ask, Distinction, Mountain High, Promising Lead, Hi Calypso and, possibly, Papal Bull.

He's baaaaaack!!!!!

It will be interesting to see which faces turn up for that race. If Peeping Fawn goes, she will be very difficult to beat (even against the colts).

Coastal Path looks very good in this races, but ideally he would need more of a stamina test, as would Yeats.

Lucarno could be a big danger on the best of his form.

dont think we'll be seeing peeping til the pretty polly (and that isnt a good sign to be honest, i hope we do see her again!!)..

Im a huge fan of Getaway now and would take alot of beating, but Lucarno could turn into a monster this year as well.

Completely missed Getaway in there. I must admit, he did look very good at Newmarket (backed against him there, because I don't like backing horses with group race penalties, especially in the early part of the season) but he looked very stylish that day, and what made that win even better was that Sixties icon was very well fancied that day.

I agree with Getaway, and A. Fabre is always super in geting them ready. But I also likes Coasthal Path (6 of 6) and I will keep close looking on SAGARA from Godolphin, his last 3rd against Dylan T. was OK. geting very fast and moving.
But still time to reflexions. :)

a shame, she probably was the worlds best filly as the report suggests, but on official ratings, she's joint 2nd best..

MMSC, any news on Saddex, doesnt look like he'll be King George bound.

Hey Brock.....

SADDEX GIVEN CHAMPION OPTION

By Nick Robson, PA Sport

German raider Saddex could be aimed at the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes at Newmarket on October 18.

The Peter Rau-trained five-year-old has already scored at the highest level this season when he won the Premio Presidente della Repubblica in Rome - his second Group One victory.

He was only half a length behind Duke Of Marmalade in the Prix Ganay in April and Rau firstly has his eyes on race in his homeland.

"The long-term plan is to go to either Newmarket for the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes or to Longchamp for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe," said Rau.

"We will make a decision after his next race at Baden Baden in September - the Grosser Preis von Baden,"

"Saddex has enjoyed a rest since his win in Rome, a victory that pleased me a lot, and he is in good form as we look ahead to Baden Baden.

"The form of his second to Duke Of Marmalade in the Prix Ganay has worked out very well, which pleases me, and that was his first start of the year - so it was a good effort.

"The Champion Stakes is a race of great prestige, so it would be good to win it."

As expected, all the leading horses entries at this stage hold entries for the Champion Stakes, including Derby winner New Approach.

Multiple Group One winners Henrythenavigator and Duke Of Marmalade are also engaged - as are the Nassau Stakes one-two-three of Halfway To Heaven, Lush Lashes and Passage Of Time.

He's proven to be good enough to go for the Arc.. and I think 12f is a better trip for him.. Thanks a million for the update!!
