Arab League agrees with Kerry on Assad chemical weapons use – but not military action.

Quote:

PARIS — Arab League nations agreed Sunday that Syrian President Bashar Assad had used chemical weapons and that it crossed an internationally recognized red line, but none have publicly endorsed the U.S. proposal for punitive air strikes against the Assad regime.

Wonder if this will work..:tro:

MOSCOW — Russia proposed on Monday that Syria hand over its chemical weapons to international control in an attempt to avert a U.S. military attack.

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, told reporters that he had conveyed the idea to Syria at talks in Moscow and expected “a quick and, I hope, a positive answer.” Syria publicly welcomed the idea, but a senior White House official told NBC News that it was no more than a delay tactic.

does anyone know, has anyone seen, why obama is so hell-bent on this strike? what's going on that he sees, that no one else sees, that makes this such a desired action?

what?

yeah, bigrun, some skeptics are already wondering if the syria/russia chemical discussion had already occurred before kerry said anything.
i don't know. all i know is i find it odd that after a couple of years of civil war, thousands dead, millions displaced, that a chemical attack is what brings us to demand an attack?
someone on another site keeps saying 'the next attack will kill 20,000'. i asked where that number came from, that they kept citing...i'll let you know when i get an answer.

obama, says he knows he might not get the votes in congress, no word on what he'd do if they vote against a strike.

France seeks UN action on Syria after Russia move

By LORI HINNANT By LORI HINNANT

PARIS (AP) — France announced Tuesday it will put forward a resolution in the U.N. Security Council aimed at forcing Syria to ultimately dismantle its chemical weapons program, seizing on a diplomatic opening from Syrian ally Russia amid Western threats of force against President Bashar Assad's regime.

France, a permanent member of the 15-nation council, will start the resolution process on Tuesday under Chapter 7 of the U.N. Charter, which is militarily enforceable, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius told reporters at a quickly arranged news conference.

The proposal would also condemn a chemical weapons attack near Damascus on Aug. 21 that Western powers allege was carried out by Assad's regime — a claim he has denied.

....sounds good to me. if it goes thru. if syria isn't just doing this to delay, but never follows thru.

by the way, does china watch the news? know what's going on in the middle east? :

In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said of the Russian proposal: "As long as it eases the tension and helps maintain Syrian and regional peace and stability, and helps politically settle the issue, the global community should consider it positively."
there's peace and stability in syria and the region?
