• Unbeaten champion mare Zenyatta galloped at her Hollywood Park headquarters Thursday, and probably will breeze “in the next couple days,” John Shirreffs said. The trainer plans to pre-enter Zenyatta in the Classic and the Ladies’ Classic at 1 1/8 miles on Nov. 6.

KIEREN FALLON will have his first high profile ride for former boss Sir Michael Stoute since his return from an 18-month riding ban when he partners Spanish Moon in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita on November 6. Fallon has ridden for Stoute since his return and enjoyed his first Grade 1 success since his comeback when partnering the Marco Botti-trained Gitano Hernando to victory in the Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita a fortnight ago.

SAEED BIN SUROOR has issued an upbeat bulletin on Delegator and Mastery as they continue their preparation for the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita next month. Delegator is an intended starter in the Breeders' Cup Mile, along with stablemate Gladiatorus, and is back working well after disappointing in the Sony-sponsored Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. "He worked very well a few days ago and came back very good from his last race," Bin Suroor said on At The Races. "I thought he'd be winning [the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes] or coming somewhere close. "He's always healthy and very honest and I think the track [at Santa Anita] will really suit him."

Quantum Racing Team #1 LLC’s 4-year-old gelding Mambo Meister was very impressive winning the $100,000 Spend a Buck Handicap (G3) at Calder Race Course last Saturday by 3 ¾ lengths for trainer Phil Gleaves, and the Florida-bred is likely bound for California and a start in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (G1) at Santa Anita on Sat., Nov. 7.

“We’ve made arrangements for a cargo flight on the (Sat., Oct.) 31st to get him there,” said Gleaves Friday morning. “We’ve had several discussions with the racing manager of the syndicate, Chris Pallas, and the eight owners and looked at the probable field, and basically decided to give him a chance.

“He’s done very well this week, but we’ll have one more conference call on Sunday before going ahead and making the pre-entry fee on Monday (Oct. 26),” said the veteran horseman who has run two horses previously in Breeders’ Cup events, both in the Juvenile. Happy Jazz Band finished fourth behind Fly So Free in the 1990 renewal at Belmont Park and Devil On Ice 10th in 1991 at Churchill Downs.

Mambo Meister may be the only horse based at Calder headed for the Breeders’ Cup this year, although there are strong connections to the Miami track from a number of other major contenders, most notably 2-year-olds that launched their careers here earlier this season before being sold privately.

Paul Pompa, Jr.s’ 2-year-old colt D’Funnybone made his first two starts here for trainer Joe Calascibetta, winning his debut on May 23 and finishing second to Jackson Bend in the $100,000 Frank Gomez Memorial on July 11 before being sold shortly thereafter and sent to trainer Rick Dutrow in New York.
A Florida-bred son of D’wildcat, D’Funnybone has since won the Saratoga Special (G2) on Aug. 20 by 10 ½ lengths and The Futurity (G2) at Belmont Park on Sept. 19 by 4 ¾ lengths. He is listed as a probable starter in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (G1) on Nov. 7.

Already in California after beginning her career at Calder is Kentucky-bred filly Blind Luck, a daughter of Pollard’s Vision that won her career debut here on June 21 by 13 ¼ lengths for trainer Jim Hatchett. She was purchased shortly thereafter by trainer Jerry Hollendorfer and partners.

In three starts this summer since the purchase, Blind Luck won a starter/allowance at Del Mar in late July, finished a game second in the Del Mar Debutante (G1) in early September and drew off to win the Oak Leaf Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita on Oct. 4, a performance could lead her to be the favorite in the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) on Fri., Nov. 6.

tvg is saying Indian blessing is out of the F/M Sprint.

Two-time champion Indian Blessing will not be pre-entered on Monday for the $1 million Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 6, trainer Bob Baffert said on Sunday.

Baffert was unhappy with Indian Blessing's six-furlong workout in 1:12.80 on Santa Anita's Pro-Ride surface Sunday morning.

"I think I'm going to pass," he said. "She just doesn't like the track. What can you do? She looks good. It's frustrating.

"I'm not going to pre-enter because I don't want the temptation to change my mind."

Where else can he run her? Wait for Hollywood (which is also synthetic), wait and ship her to Gulfstream (where she would probably do well), or retire her. Dubai is switching over to synthetic, so I assume that is out.

As a fan, I would like to see her race one more time and go out with a win before being bred.

Her defection lowers the odds on Informed Decision, who I really like.

she may not run again from what he said, since they intend to breed her next spring. but she won't be running at the bc.

Cigar Mile? Why not give it a shot?

I have always thought she would be a very good miler. Early in her career she would not rate, now she does and IMO would be a decent miler. If Baffert pointed her to the Cigar and she was doing well I think I would take a stab on her regardless of who was running

Pyro drilled a half mile in 48.80 Sunday in preparation for the B.C. Dirt Mile.

Rainbow Quest jogged on Santa Anita’s Pro-Ride track Saturday. Europe’s 2008 champion 2-year-old filly trained by John Gosden is pointing to the $2 million Filly & Mare Turf at 1 1/4 miles on Nov. 6.

Other Breeders’ Cup race candidates on the work tabs Sunday included Presious Passion (Turf), a mile in 1:39.80, Girolamo (Dirt Mile), five furlongs in 1:00.20, and Gayego (Sprint), half-mile in :51.20, all on Santa Anita’s main track.

Santa Anita turf workouts included Noble Court (Turf Sprint), six furlongs in 1:14.40, Becky’s Kitten (Juvenile Turf) in :58.40, and Cowboy Cal (Mile), half-mile in :48.40.

At Hollywood Park, Marsh Side (Turf), went three furlongs on the main track in :37.60…

LEADING 3-YEAR-OLD ECLIPSE CANDIDATE SUMMER BIRD DRILLS FIVE FURLONGS; DESORMEAUX FLYS IN FROM NEW YORK FOR DRILL; TRAINER ICE “SUPER HAPPY”

Belmont, Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Summer Bird, the leading candidate for an Eclipse Award in the male 3-year-old division, worked five furlongs in 1:00.45 under regular rider Kent Desormeaux Sunday after Oak Tree’s second race. The chestnut son of Birdstone came on the main track at the head of the quarter mile chute, back-tracked to the half mile pole and then jogged and galloped through the stretch and around the Club House turn.

Desormeaux set him down to breeze approaching the five furlong pole and he guided him through splits of 24.42 and 48.56. Summer Bird galloped out six furlongs in 1:13.03 as he continues to prepare for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at 1 1/4 miles on Nov. 7.

“The work was great,” trainer Tim Ice said after Summer Bird’s drill. “This was exactly what we wanted. He looked super getting over the track and he’s been getting over it very well ever since we got here. Kent had a ton of horse under him and he just let him work on his own, within himself. I’m super-happy with how he’s trained here and how he’s handled everything. We’ll walk tomorrow and he’ll go back to the track Tuesday morning.”

Ice said that Summer Bird would have one more breeze prior to the Breeders’ Cup. “He’ll work five eighths next Saturday,” he said. Desormeaux, who experienced a 3-hour airport runway delay in New York, flew in earlier in the day for the work. With his son Jacob in tow, Desormeaux simply stated, “He enjoyed it and he galloped out super.”

I would expect a start in KY (where she'd be retiring to) in the Chilukki (a one-turn mile Grade 2 I think), if she runs again.

IB obviously hasn't been the same filly since going to Dubai. Hopefully they retire her.

All this talk about the BC was inevitable.
