I remember one time in a very big game....bases loaded---2outs.....3-2 count.

I slipped and let a waist high ,inside corner fastball go by.

I snapped my head back at the umpire and snarled...

..."Well-----do ya feel lucky...pig?"

What does that make you chucky? You are the ******* that claims to know "99% more than anyone else out there about what goes on in the whitehouse". lest we digress.

If you dont see the validity in my argument or Ateam's thats fine although closeminded and dumb. Not seeing a validity though show not only a lack of understanding of sports but of human nature in general. Somehow...thats not surprising.

Yes, the batter was supposed to execute. That goes without saying. But why put him in a position to fail and risk so much when you have less risk letting him hit a simple fly ball?

You dont believe in pressure? What about A rod?

Naturally as with every other thread you pop into you have drifted away from the main points. I am totally aware of pressure involved in sports however I am not arrogant enough to believe that I can tell what measure of pressure had on a particular player or team. Only someone like you who loves to make arguments without really backing them up or vague, unanswerable points can directly tell how much pressure each player was feeling.

Last point before I get fired.:)

A manager's job is to do the best he can to assess each situation and make the most effective strategical decision. Part of that strategy has to take into account intangibles such as momentum, morale and player psyche. Sometimes a manager can make the "right" move at the "wrong" time.

Was Sage Rosenfels plays at the end of the Houston/indy game largely responsible for the loss? Yes. Was it his coach's fault for putting his team in that situation by leaving the ball in the QB's hands up 17 with 5 minutes to go?

Was Shanahan's decision to go for 2 the "right" move? It worked. But i think that was dumb.

Was the squeeze a "moronic" play? no. I never contended that it was. My point was only that he was taking a huge risk that he didnt need to take.

Was it the sole reason they lost the game? Of course not. But i would say that it was the biggest play. If Shields goes out and pitches the 9th clean, then I admit that its not as big of a deal. but i still think he pitches differently with a lead and the Sox hitters hit differently knowing that they blew a late lead and if they dont perform they have to fly back to LA.

Why didnt you make this point in the first place? Your points are very valid ones and the play is always a risky one but I am of the school of failed execution over strategy. By the way there is zero chance he pitches in the 9th with the lead. Shaky or not, Krod has to be the one who closes it.

It was absolutely the right move. The chance of converting a 2 point is over 50% and considering how well his offense was playing it was much higher than that. The chance of winning the coin toss for overtime is 50/50 and the way his defense was playing there was no way they were winning if they lost the coin toss. It was the right move whether or not they converted.

Statitiscally, I can't argue your point (i dont know the stats outside of what you posted).

But...

They were at home. Basically you were putting your faith in one play from the two yard line instead of believing that your team could either stop the opposing team at home or score a winning drive.

If it doesnt work? Do you think they merely lose that game?

It was definitely a slap in the face at his defense and a vote of confidence for his offense. But considering the way both had played that game it was the right side of the ball to place your confidence in.

I think your gain is much less than what you are risking thats all. Perhaps we disagree snipe and thats fair enough.

I see nothing wrong with gambling but risk/reward has to be in line. Prather kicks in the extra point and they go to OT it is impossible to say what the outcome would be.

Going for it certainly defied conventional wisdom.

As I have stated many times Morty is free daily hilarious entertainment with a creative wit that should be making MONEY with it......surely we can get you a job somehow writing lines for something like "2.5 Men".

Can't you just see Morty writing the kids lines.....

So far you have missed your calling as nobody is funnier. There is always time to fix this mistake:$:

I think his complete body of work in this thread is top notch.

The fact that the posts were being completely ignored by the main thread combatants made it even finer work.

That is the problem, NFL coaches are scared of what the media will say if they defy conventional wisdom even when conventional wisdom is statistically wrong. Studies have shown that teams would do better if they went for it on 4th and less than 6 anywhere outside of their own 30 yard line. But if anyone started doing that there would be a monster media backlash and even if it succeeded six times out of seven the next day the media would focus on the one time it failed.
