When was the last time we read of American stewards calling in a jock for failure to persevere?

When was the last time one was called in for excessive use of the whip?

When was the last time one was called in to review tape and explain his actions wrangling a horse back inappropriately?

Guys do this stuff on a DAILY BASIS ACROSS THE COUNTRY... Yet Victor Molina gets put on the ground for 30 days for a split second, anger-generated, loss of control? A guy who doesn't have a single transgression on his record in a 27 year career? Unbelievable. Priorities totally out of whack.

when you first see the headline it sounds bad (it's not great)...but i think this is definitely overkill. have to wonder how much a jock can really injure a horse that's ten times his size anyway. it's not like he drop-kicked a puppy across the infield.

steve, I see your point and in general would agree that perhaps it is a bit of a harsh punishment. given his record I would think that a small fine and some days would be appropriate. 30 days does seem excessive.

And you also make good points that the steward review of other types of action is wanting.

However to me this incident is a bit different than a simple riding infraction. Those are close calls where you are walking a fine line between what is normal riding and what is inappropriate. There is room for misinterpretation or an explanation from the rider as to what happened.

Kicking a horse is not at all part of the sport and I think they had to do something to demonstrate to the public that this is totally out of bounds. He showed in that kick a total disregard and disrespect to the horse who was a young 2YO and just as paniced and frightened as he was.

he screwed up in front of the camera. He lost control of his emotions. There was no justification for his action. Did he hurt the horse? Hell no.
But when you risk the outrage 5000 fans (or 10,000? more?) because you can't control your emotions , then you really screwed up big time.
Had this happened in the barn in full view of the stewards and out of the PUBLIC eye, then there would have been no penalty whatsoever. Molina is a good guy.

im sure hes gotten days@some point for things that have happened during races atleast, if hes been riding that long and has never gotten days then he actually hasnt been riding LOL!

so, the difference between the usual $250 fine and his punishment is due to poor timing? that's ridiculous. he should appeal, and he should win. whether it's one witness or one thousand, the 'crime' remains the same. so should the punishment.

Kicking a horse in the belly may not be a part of the sport on T.V but it is on the backside , not that it happens everyday to every horse but I bet all race horses have got a boot to the belly at one time or another. Biting a horses ear in the starting gate isnt part of the sport either but after he tries to flip over and hurts the gate hand doing it , he will get his ear bit , or his tail bent upward or the eartongs put on .
I would say the thing that will stick out in this horses mind will be his fear of the gate or just his bad behaivor in it more than the jockey's boot to his belly, I bet if you put a starting a gate and a jockey in front of this horse he bolts from the gate not the jockey.

I like the ugly displays the public can show and get away with , like Ive had horses bleed and been pulling them up down the lane and had assholes from the grandstand yelling dispicable stuff at me and the horse , " like hey why dont you just send that horse to the glue factory" , Ive had gamblers throw stuff at me when I was walking back to the jocks room and have heard them yell that they wish the next horse I ride would break its legs off . So lets start kicking theses people out of the grandstand for dispicible acts of behavor on the spur of the moment and while they are walking them to the door they can give them their 1000.00 fine for not being better behaved.:rolleyes:
