Here is my theory, which could easily fit into continuing the show into the future...
I have heard that they filmed 3 different endings, each of which could have taken the place of the black screen. What a better marketing tool for the DVD's than "See what REALLY happened in the end!!!". I think that is all they were looking for.
Plus, any or all of those three endings could eventually lead into a movie or additional seasons when the guys realize that their entire acting careers at this point are tied to The Sopranos and need a little pocket change...
