Jon Court was gracious as usual.

You stay classy, Sadler.

Crap. When it went on like that with nothing firm, I got the feeling it wasn't gonna work out. Can I just ask, is there something Jon's got against him that keeps some trainer from wanting him? I mean are these just the breaks and it's nothing personal, or is there something that he needs to do that he isn't doing?

He simply wants to be able to experience having a horse in the Derby knowing there almost certainly will never be another chance for him. It's as simple as that and I doubt any one of us would feel differently if the opportunity came our way.

Racing needs to follow the marathon model. If a bunch of spastics want to run in the marathon against world class runners, NO PROBLEM, say the, for example, NY Marathon bigwigs. We'll start you AFTER the world class group, so you don't get in their way, let them run like athletes while you do the Special Olympian thing and let them collect their money for running well.

Problem with the Derby is that the Special Olympian horses get in the way of the better horses' chances of winning the race. We don't need 5 speed horses and 5 pick up the pieces after EVERYONE else has run types. Which, I suppose makes the race interesting if you're better 150 combos but not bettable if you're trying to make some money. In other words, Homeboy Kris' connections would probably be better served looking into a match race situation with Sweetnorthernsaint -- you know, the horse that, more often than not, impedes itself at the gate. I know I'd pay good money to see that one.

Right after the Arkansas Derby I kinda got the feeling that Sadler didn't like the way he won. He said something like, "well I wanted the lead" can't remember but it sounded more like a criticism than an compliment.

I admit I am biased. There were too many races (outside of California) where I believe Jon put the horse in a position to win.

Gotta sting a bit when you win a $1m G1 and get replaced next out. :zz:

No Class from "Line of Davids" connections. This rider switch will not get their horse any closer to the winners circle.

It's just Gods way of keeping Jon humble.

What am I missing? Sadler's obligation is to do the best he possibly can for his owners. Opting for a top 5 jock over a mediocrity makes sense to me. It's not personal, it's (good) business. Not like this one has much of a shot but why not do all you possibly can, nonetheless?

NTamm1215 04-20-2010 07:09 PM

Gomez is also replacing Theriot on Blame when he returns in the Schaefer on the Preakness undercard, not Derby related but it's another instance of a winning jockey getting replaced.

Top 5 or not (which RB is), how many TC races has he won?

dalakhani 04-20-2010 07:21 PM

It sucks for Court but Sadler is a west coast trainer and putting one of the top jockeys out west on his horse obviously is a good move on many levels.

I know this couldn't have hurt him as bad as getting taken off of Leroids de animaux.

Coach Pants 04-20-2010 07:26 PM

Jon was out west for a few years and just recently left. It's a bad decision. Bejarano passed on the Arkansas Derby. What Sadler is really doing is saying his horse isn't that important.

I wish them all the best though.

Thanks for listening.

Who did Bejarano ride that day instead? Don't remember.

I would hate to see how much it would cost for a glass of wine if he was trying to get outrageously wealthy!
