She's not going to the Classic but she should be. And if she won she'd absolutely be HOY.

Fascinating that an amazon like her that comes from way behind, was within three lengths of the pace and still sailed on in ...
It showed me a new dimension, even conceding the slow early pace ...
This mare is just too good ... She is elegant, full of personality, and can run ... Perfectly ...
Despite the clamor to run her against males---where she does belong---I applaud the connections that are letting her grow into her huge body and mature mentally ...
If she runs next year, I can not see her not going against males ... And successfully ...

wow Tiago was like a gazillion wide. With a better trip he would have won.

The typical Mike Smith 8-10 wide move

Yes, he could have won with a "smart ride" which is an oxymoron when Mike Smith is the jockey. Stardom Bound is good enough vs. her competition to overcome that ride but Tiago is not....

The ride on Tiago was so bad i was embarassed for Smith.

RolloTomasi 09-27-2008 08:19 PM

I thought Spirit One was interesting. I don't know if it was the ride, the unfamiliarity with the surface, or the colt being too amped up prerace, but he ran in spots throughout. Broke well, settled nicely early, made an early bid to reach contention between horses, lost position, then surged back into it at the 1/16th pole just as Well Armed rebroke from the pack. Finished a solid 5th.

Hopefully his connections will use this race as a building block and continue to point for the Classic, rather than target one of the turf races. With a more focused run, he could threaten for a placing I think.

that horse had a more than winning trip today, yes he had to swing out for the stretch but that hardly cost him anything......you have to run down a tiring front running on that track and he could not......can you see major sucker horse in the classic, especially if there or more views that the trip cost him the win.

Oh, geez. First off, can we lay off Personal Ensign already? She was one-in-a-million or whatever.

Secondly, we're trying to talk about the distaff division (ie dirt routers). Its well established that sprinting fillies can tear up with colts for 3/4s of a mile. See ya Very Subtle, My Juliet, Desert Stormer (brutal), Ta Wee.

Thirdly, Susan's Girl was champion 3yo filly. I don't think she ran against colts til she was older. By the same token, Shuvee was the dominant 3yo filly of 1969, winning the Triple Tiara and the Alabama. She lost the championship to Gallant Bloom, who beat her a couple of times in lesser races like the Delaware Oaks and the Gardenia. Either way, she didn't face colts til later.

The rest of your examples are basically plodding stayers that might have run against males in marathon races. They weren't, in many instances, even at the top of their respective divisions much less dominant, and thus not particularly relevant to the discussion at hand.

Oh...and Cocoa Beach?

9 furlongs seems short for a classic division turf stakes at this time of year.

Mast Track is a solid synth/turf horse, who doesn't need the lead.

Nice patient start from Gryder on Well Armed, but why did Johnny V force the issue with Mast Track? He obviously wasn't going to get an easy trip up front with Well Armed breathing down his neck, and he doesn't seem like a need-to-lead horse to me... Wonder what Frankel thinks, and if that was the horse being rank or Johnny V misreading the horse??

yes , but no it wasn't worth any :$:. Albertus Maximus was bet much more than his cumulative form would suggest he was worth, and Fan-Fav Tiago runs 2nd. Smart money knew to bet his last race and some dumb money probably followed Gomez as well. Pretty good trips for AM and Tiago because the track was playing bigtime to the wide finish in the lane.

Was the Classic winner in the Goodwood?
No.
If the track plays the same, the classic winner should be a quality turf horse with late kick. If none such horse enters, Go Between has as much as chance as any by default.

Well Armed has a shot at top 5 in the classic if things go smoothly.

Obviously way too cheap. I don't think he got a call :D.

TIAGO, ran well and IMO is legit in the classic, especially if Commentator does run, the pace will be sharp and Tiago should have got enough out of this race today to be set for a lifetime best race

please explain this.... how was the center of the track the place to be ? street boss, clearly the beat and most talented sprinter in his race, gets a amazing pace to run at, but could not get by, please dont tell me the 8 is better then street boss

What? Gomez blew it. He was only about 3 lengths off of a :45 half going 10f and then moved too early. Not to mention the horse is a horrendous hanger. When's the last time he won, when he was life and death to beat allowance horse Zann (with Lava Man and Surf Cat in as lame duck favorites)?
