The best thing I can say about Stauffer, is that he is good for the fans, and that he makes the horses sound great.
That is what these guys in football and the NBA do. A man just ran a piece of leather for 20 feet, and they make it sound historical. They are constantly selling their sport through the mass media. Stauffer gets it. Stauffer is so convincing, that when you handicap the replay, you kind of have to check the fractions twice and watch a replay again with no sound. -To see if that horse really was that good. A story to remember is the time Vic Stauffer made Molengao sound so good in the 8.5furlong Mervyn Leroy, lol. I think I stood up and pumped my fist :D. Every wise guy was picking him to beat Lava Man in Lava Man's 10furlong Gold Cup last year, nearly going off the favorite over Lava Man. Molengao 8/5 , Lava Man 7/5. Here was a horse that I was tossing from the exacta. The public viewed it as a competitive race. Some of the enthusiasm was in no doubt, at least in part affected by Stauffer's high-energy call of Molengao in the Mervyn Leroy: "Molengao charges in the center of cushion track... , BUT NOW "MOLENGAO OPENS UP A THREE LENGTH LEAD, LOOK AT MOLENGAO! ROLLLL!L:zz: AWAY! HES SUDDENLY 5 IN FRONT! MOLENGAO WOWWW:eek: thats a big one molengao won by 5..." The handle for the 2007 Gold Cup was a record 22,000,000 Up 45% from the 2006 handle of 15,000,000. :tro: |
sometimes 24.1 is SCORCHING FRACTIONS UP FRONT!!..but all in all he does and has done a great job for along time..

Can't remember the guy's name Wrona I think...but the Aussie guy from Golden Gate and or Bay Meadows is very entertaining and his calls are pretty descriptive. With Trevor Denman slipping in the past few years I think this guy is better right now.

I will chime in for Vic as I enjoy his style, enthusiasm and don't care if 1 out of 120 horses a day have their name mis-pronounced.:tro:
I doubt Magna GP will treat either with a :great deal of professional respect. We could use VJS at Pinnacle Raceway in July! |
Stauffer is one of the few race callers that I instantly hit "mute" on the tv. His calls are annoying. Bring back Luke K. Collmus calls races fine...no annoying extra crap.

all i can say is, if you're getting ready to complain about ANY caller....tune to coverage of turfway, and listen to battaglia for a bit. it'll put everything in perspective for you, and you'll forget about whichever caller you were going to complain about.
it could ALWAYS be worse. |

Battaglia is the worst by far. He will say a horse is making a huge move when in actuality the horse is wide 8th and has no shot. The worst hands down. |

I vote for Vic! I think he is one of the best race callers out there. He has passion and love for our sport and I enjoy that in his calls. I love horse racing so much more because of him. I very much believe that he deserves a second chance at Gulfstream. Go get 'em, Ace!!

Let me try this again.
My vote is for Vic. I lived in Hialeah when I first heard Vic calling races. I was the host of my own TV show and owned a few horses, but really have been a horse racing enthusiast since 1977. I remember being starstruck with Vic and did everything I could to meet him. to me he was a true star. He is enthusiastic, clear and passionate. I think horse racing is the most exciting sport around. Whether you own a horse or are betting on a race, it is tremendously exciting. Yet for years I often thought, "are these race callers watching the same races I am watching?" The race calls were extremely boring and monotonous. Collmus is a very solid race caller, and I am sure he is a nice guy, but he certainly falls into this boring category. Vic brings true excitement to this truly exciting sport. If I owned a race track and had my choice between Collmus or Stauffer. It would be a no brainer. I would pic Stauffer everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. |
