Not so obscure; his sire Candy Stripes has also given us Different (Beverley D and Spinster S), Leroidesanimaux (champion turfer), a batch of group winners in the Southern Hemiphere, including an Oaks winner in South Africa, and his daughter Candy Girl foaled Candy Ride (Pacific Classic, you remember that awesome race). Son of Blushing Groom out of a Lyphard mare, hardly weird or obscure. Just not Storm Cat or A.P. Indy.

Yes, not a Mensa society around here Joe.

perhaps i should preface all posts like mine above in future with 'comparably'...yes, he's got a good sire--but had he been an ap indy, a storm cat, etc, he'd be retired now. sheesh. it's saturday, can we limit schooling to monday thru friday??

ALostTexan 03-31-2007 12:54 PM

Still nothing like the call for Invasor when he won the Pimlico Special, and started to stake his claim to a great horse, hearing that scream of IN-VA-SORE, THE ARGENTIAN INVASION, IN THE PIMLICO SPECIAL!!!

Still gives me chills, yet though he impressed me, I didn't and I don't think that many had a clue of just how special this horse was going to be over the past year, especially in that somewhat weak Special field...

I'll be very surprised if Discreet Cat comes out of this race without some type of injury. Say what you will but he is far better than what we saw today. For him not to pass a horse in the stretch, I'd be surprised if he didn't get hurt. He also didn't look like he was moving well through the upper stretch.

Invasor ran brilliantly, he was always travelling great and did the job so well - he's just such a tough horse.. disappointed DC didnt show more but there's doubts to whether he would have beaten Invasor anyway.
he only wins by just enough it seems Invasor, but boy is he some horse!

I know, trying to decide what to do next. Just been soaking this up for awhile.

Looks like maybe time to dive in to GS, the big races are coming up.

Congrats from me as well. I'm glad someone did well.

I keyed that South African filly in the Golden Shaheen in a bunch of pick three's and she didn't run a step.

Good for you on getting some wins.

I hit the pick 3 with Invasor, but felt it was a little short. Shouldn't in two 16 horse fields a 11-1 (7th choice) with 6-1 (5th choice) (both foreign horses at that) pay better than $268 (almost exactly the parlay value)? Or am I overestimating the blind stupidity of the American public?

I was expecting it to be in the $500-600 range.

brianwspencer 03-31-2007 05:27 PM

What a race! I finally got home and saw it. I've never been a huge fan of Discreet Cat, but I've thought that he was a very talented animal. I don't think that this race does much to disprove his talent, because we know it's there. But like Bernardini, I've never thought he was quite as good as some people make him sound, especially when stacked next to Invasor like Bernie was.

I think that this race is less about showing that Cat is not as good as some say (even though he's not), as it is that maybe we can finally get around to giving Invasor the props he deserves and has been deserving of since the Pimlico race. I think that great horses overcome adversity and trips that they aren't used to having, and Cat showed nothing today at all. We can blame him being at the back all we want, but Invasor has run races out of his comfort zone and has eaten the track at Gulfstream and still overcome it.

I've always thought that Skip Away was the best horse "of my time," but I may very well have been watching the best horse of my time today.

Hey, a few more starts and he'll be the richest racehorse by American-calculated earnings, right? What's he need, like another 2 million to pass Skip?

Won a cool thirty and a half bil.

It had nothing to do with the jockey. DC is a glass horse, a talented and but fragile horse. I wouldn't be surprised if that's it for him, something had to happen. I still don't think he beats Invasor on his best day. Invasor is a tremendous horse, I think he won on guts alone, he didn't look like he had much of a burst at the end, he just broke Premium Tap's heart.
