Sad news from Racing Post...
Dubai Shaheen winner Big City Man dies By Jason Ford4.28PM 7 JUL 2009 USA: Dubai Golden Shaheen winner Big City Man, the world's top dirt sprinter this year and beaten just once in seven career outings, is reported to have died after a workout at Hollywood Park. Three times a winning juvenile at Calder in Florida two years ago, the four-year-old went on to become one of the success stories of the Dubai Carnival after being purchasedby privately by Prince Sultan Al Kabeer and sent to Saudi Arabian-based American Jerry Barton. Big City Man won three of his four starts on the sand at Nad Al Sheba, taking the Group 3 Al Shindagha Sprint over 6f en route to victory in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen over the same course and distance on World Cup night, when he beat Indian Blessing by a length and a quarter. The son of Northern Afleet was transferred to the California stable of Jeff Mullins at HollywoodPark to be prepared for the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar on August 8. However, Barton's assistant trainer reported on Facebook that the son of Northern Afleet had collapsed after a workout at the weekend. Big City Man suffered the only defeat of his career in the Group 3 Mahab Al Shimaal in Dubai in March, but his powerful Golden Shaheen victory next time out was rated the best dirt sprint performance of the season so far according to both RPR and official ratings. |

Lawyer Ron.....
Poor guy. :( BH... Stallion Lawyer Ron Euthanized By Ron Mitchell Updated: Saturday, July 11, 2009 12:25 PM Posted: Saturday, July 11, 2009 12:19 PM Lawyer Ron , the 2007 champion older male horse, was euthanized July 10 at Stonewall Farm Stallions near Versailles, Ky., due to complications from a recent colic surgery A 6-year-old son of Langfuhr , Lawyer Ron was standing his second season at stud at Stonewall Farm Stallions, and his first crop of foals arrived this year. “Not only was he a superior racehorse horse but his physical presence and contagious personality captivated everyone that saw him,” said Clark Shepherd, manager of Stonewall Farm Stallions. “His first foals are tremendous. When breeders call in to report their Lawyer Ron foals being born, they all have a story to tell. This is obviously a huge loss for us, as well as for the racing and breeding community.” Lawyer Ron stood at Stonewall for a 2009 fee of $25,000. Bred by the late James T. Hines Jr. and named for Hines' longtime friend and advisor, attorney Ron Bamberger, Lawyer Ron raced solely for his breeder until an interest in the colt was purchased by Stonewall Farms Racing Div. 1 prior to an unplaced finish in the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I). Lawyer Ron retired with a dozen wins and eight placings from 26 races and earnings of $2,790,008. He was trained first by Robert Holthus and then by Todd Pletcher. His dam, Donation, is by Lord Avie. During his championship season in 2007 while trained by Pletcher, Lawyer Ron won an allowance race before posting a daylight win in the Oaklawn Handicap (gr. II). Trained in 2007 by Pletcher, Lawyer Ron shipped to Saratoga, where he won the Whitney Handicap (gr. I) while setting a new track record of 1:46.64 for nine furlongs, and won the Woodward Stakes (gr. I) by more than eight lengths. |

http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/nat...m-in-Ohio.aspx Fire destroys main barn at Double D Farm in Ohio by Frank Angst One pensioned broodmare died in a Wednesday morning fire at Double D Farm that destroyed the main barn at the northeast Ohio Thoroughbred farm. While employees were relieved that no people were injured in the fire and that equine loss of life was not greater, the fire did destroy the Medina, Ohio, farm’s 30,000 square-foot barn. The grand white barn featured 100 stalls and a signature cupola. Jevon Crumley, manager and trainer for the farm, said most of the 65 Thoroughbreds were in the paddock when the fire began at about 7:30 or 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning. He said there were about 20 Thoroughbreds in the barn at the time of the fire, and all but one were evacuated from the structure. Agacerie, a 28-year-old Exclusive Native mare, lost her life in the fire. Agacerie won six stakes in her racing career and set a turf course record of 2:29.40 for 1½ miles at Garden State Park when she won a division of the 1985 Vineland Handicap (G3). Agacerie, who finished third in the ’85 Flower Bowl Handicap (G1) for owner-breeder Tartan Farms, produced seven winners from eight starters. The 110-acre farm owned by Carl Ackerman and Carole Hassell is where Grade 1 winner Harlan’s Holiday was born. Double D Farm privately sold Harlan’s Holiday in January 2000 during his yearling year. Crumley said the farm is very appreciative of its friends and neighbors. “We’ve had so many calls and e-mails from people offering to help out,” said Crumley, who noted that thanks to their generosity, arrangements have been made to house the displaced Thoroughbreds. The cause of the fire is under investigation. |
