Seeking Daylight...

http://www.thoroughbredtimes.com/bre...ight-dies.aspx

Killaghy Castle, 9 years old, broke his back at Sandown on the 31st. It was his first race back since April 13th, 2007 (he was pulled up in that one), poor guy.

Pressgang, on the same day at Sandown. 7 year old gelding who had won his last start. From the results for that day...

Pressgang suffered a fatal fall at the seventh, snapping his off-fore, and sadly he had to be put down.

Rest in peace.

What a lovely filly she was on the track, and competitive with the boys .

Sadly I remember her third in the JCGC where she was just outside of the strickenTimely Writer when he fell, and then three other horses went down behind him ...

Nice to remember she retired sound and lived a long life .

New Bolton Veterinarian Reid Dead
by: Edited Press Release
February 14 2009, Article # 13617

Charles F. Reid, DVM, MS, Dipl. ACVR, emeritus professor of radiology at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center and a founder of the American College of Veterinary Radiologists (ACVR), died Feb. 12.

Reid graduated from Cornell University's School of Veterinary Medicine in 1956 and following military service, a master's of science degree from Cornell, and a two-year research fellowship at the VA Hospital in New York, he joined the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine's New Bolton Center in 1963.

In his 35 year-tenure at the large animal veterinary clinic, which treated such equine patients as the late 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Barbaro, Reid chaired both the section of radiology and the department of clinical studies.

Reid trained radiologists who migrated to New Bolton from a wide geographical area and then departed to veterinary schools and practices both in the United States and abroad.

Acknowledged by both his friends in the horse world and colleagues in the veterinary profession as the "Father of Equine Radiology," Reid's opinion was sought worldwide because of his clinical approach to equine radiographic interpretation.

Reid is survived by his brother Richard; sons Todd and Tom; three grandchildren; and his longtime loving companion, Kathleen Crompton.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Charles F. Reid Scholarship Fund. Checks should be drawn to the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania, earmarked for the Scholarship Fund, and sent to the Development Office at New Bolton Center, 382 West Street Road, Kennett Square, PA 19348.

THYNE AGAIN SUFFERS FATAL COLLAPSE

By Ashley Iveson, PA Sport

Grade One-winning chaser Thyne Again collapsed and died during a routine canter on the gallops on Thursday morning.

Liam Burke's stable star finished fifth in the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Leopardstown last weekend and his County Cork handler is understandably devastated by the news.

"He was just having a routine canter out the back and dropped dead," said Burke.

"It's terrible news and to be honest it hasn't really sunk in yet. We were looking forward to going to Cheltenham with him but that's history now.

"Unfortunately these things happen in racing and it always seems to happen to the good ones."

The eight-year-old won six of his 18 career starts, including the Baileys Arkle Perpetual Challenge Cup at Leopardstown last January.

Turner taken to hospital after gallops fall
By Tony Elves9.34AM 3 MAR 2009
HAYLEY TURNER had to be taken to Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge with head injuries on Tuesday morning after a stalls accident in Newmarket.

Turner, who became the first female rider in Britain to notch over 100 winners last year, was putting Old Sarum through the stalls on Racecourse Side when the horse suffered a fatal injury when breaking his shoulder when jumping out.

Turner had blood streaming from her nose and mouth and was initially unconscious but was able to walk into the ambulance.

Trainer Phil McEntee, who accompanied the jockey to Addenbrookes, said: "Hayley being Hayley didn't want to make a fuss of it but she was bleeding pretty badly. She walked into the ambulance and she is currently having head x-rays.

"Her parents are on the way to the hospital from their home in Nottinghamshire."

The NYRA pressed its luck running 10 races yesterday, and paid for it when favored Military Major became the ninth fatality of the year, pulling up soon after the start with an injury to his left front leg. A splint was applied but the 7-year-old was euthanized after being vanned off.

Santa Anita Handicap
Late in the race, Blue Exit, a 4-year-old who had won four of nine career starts, broke down in the final turn and track officials said the horse had to be euthanized. Rider Robby Albarado was not injured.

Legal Bid, four years old, at Fontwell.

This was his first race (on March 4th) and he finished 2nd...

From Racing post...

Legal Bid, who cost 34,000gns, comes from a yard that can get one ready to win at the first time of asking and he went on down the back. Drawing well clear with the winner, he found plenty for pressure, but was unable to hold on. Unfortunately he won't have a chance to improve on this, however, as he sadly dropped dead after the race.

Rest in peace.
