At age 7, Five Steps made a third bid in the Maryland Million Classic this year (he finished second in the 2007 Classic and third in 2005) but exited the race with bone chips. Surgery was successful, and Five Steps went home to recover, then contracted a still-undetermined illness and was euthanized early this month.

Anyone who follows racing in Japan knows this name.....

Eye Popper, a grand old gentleman, was euthanized today.

******* laminitis.

Off the top of my head (cause there's no article on the JRA site yet), I believe he ran in the Tenno Sho four times, he ran in the Caulfield Cup (he was 2nd to Railings), the Melbourne Cup (didn't do well), won the Hanshin Daishoten last year in his second attempt... he was 8 years old and had a lot of fans.

Here's his last race (from October 12th)... the Kyoto Daishoten (G2). He was 3rd.

Wanderin Boy.

A gallant gentleman who was adored by his fans and very much loved by his connections.

A real shame.

JODAMI PASSES AWAY

By Tom Peacock, PA Sport

Peter Beaumont is reflecting on the loss of his 1993 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Jodami, who died on Monday at the age of 23.

Also second in the following year's Gold Cup and three times successful in the Irish Hennessy, Jodami had an accident at the trainer's stable in Brandsby, North Yorkshire, where he spent many winters.

"It's very sad. We used to see him every morning at six and give him his oats in the evening," said Beaumont.

"I rode him for many years myself when I was looking after the yearlings and we will all miss him.

"I was at the press awards lunch yesterday and it was just near the end when they called me up to tell me.

"It's hard to say whether there was anything wrong with him before, but I do know there was nothing they could do.

"Ireland, Cheltenham and Haydock were the main great days and he was no trouble at all - we never had a cross word."

It's been a bad week and so many truly talented horses left us, but i need to add this name and just remember him for a minute.

Mighty Beau.

I don't know if any sites will bother with an obit so from memory I know he won the Aegon Turf Sprint and was once 2nd to Soaring Free (Canadian HOY) but i can't remember which race. I'm pretty sure he was in the Hollywood Turf Express.

Back when Mullins trained him, he ran at Royal Ascot in the King's Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee. I think he was 5th in the King's Stand.

Anyway, he was pulled up at Penn National a couple of days ago and they were kind enough to write back.

Nice horse who died trying running for a crappy $4 thousand.

Run in peace, good boy.

Cecil's 2,000 Guineas hopeful Wingwalker dies
By Turia Tellwright3.42PM 2 DEC 2008

HIGHLY-REGARDED juvenile Wingwalker collapsed and died on Monday morning.

The Henry Cecil-trained colt jumped to the fore of the 2009 2,000 Guineas betting after two impressive starts, but subsequently disappointed in the Group 3 Somerville Tattersall Stakes in October and was consequently a general 33-1 shot for the Classic.

Teddy Grimthorpe, racing manager to owner Khalid Abdullah, said the two-timewinner was thought to have suffered a heart attack.

"Wingwalker collapsed and died during a canter yesterday morning," Grimthorpe confirmed on Tuesday.

"We have yet to have the results of the post-mortem but we can presume he suffered a heart attack. It's a huge loss as Henry rated him very highly and we thought he might have been very special.

"It will be felt very hard throughout the organisation."

No link yet, but I have heard that Sweet Vendetta - winner of the GII Black Eyed Susan this year, has passed away at Winstar from some sort of bacterial infection. Terribly sad news. She was planned to be bred to Distorted Humor this season. I'll pass on confirmation when I get it. :(

I received confirmation from a source close to the owners and previous owners that this is in fact the case. Sad day.

From Old Friends

Quote:

Dec. 5, 2008: Flying Pidgeon, winner of the Grade One Hollywood Invitational and member of the Calder Hall of Fame, was humanely euthanized this morning at Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement in Georgetown, Kentucky due to the infirmaties of old age. The 27-year-old son of Upper Case out of Miss Minnesota was retired to Old Friends by Jane White and the Flying Pidgeon Syndicate in October, 2006.

Flying Pidgeon won or placed 23 stakes, 18 of them graded, in 56 lifetime starts and earned $1,154,337.

"Yesterday, Flying Pidgeon was resting in the late afternoon sun," said Old Friends founder, Michael Blowen. "When we went to put him up for the night, he wouldn't get up. Within minutes, Dr. Doug Byars was here administering steroids to help the old guy. By this morning it was clear that Pidge was telling us it was his time."

A ceremony in his honor will take place at Old Friends in March.
