Unless your name is you know who...then you are called one of the all time greats

yup - should have elaborated... just trying to visualize how quick a middle move this is... Relaunch set the first quarter, SB got the 3/4th's just a head back of 1.08 and change... Just seems an insanely fast middle move (making up 9 lengths) to close into that number with a half still to come ...

Did Spectacular Bid dance in the paddock? If not, I find it hard to really take him seriously, despite his unbelievable career.

Hey I feel like I need to apologize to you on here also. A lot of other people saw what I said and I was wrong. What I said was way out of line. Again I apologize.

Pretty sure he did. I'm thinking it was Guns and Roses "Welcome to the Jungle"

No match for this though..

Joseph there's nothing else going on. The BC is over, it's the end of the year and it's a Monday, what else should the DRF talk about/be covering? So he won 20 in a row, great, nice story. No one is saying that he's better than Zenyatta because he broke the streak. The only thing that he definitely accomplished tonight is that he'll probably be an answer on Jeopardy somewhere down the road.

This post is the problem with the sport. Nothing else going on? 4 solid stakes at Aqu Saturday including a Grade 1. The Clark on Friday at Churchill and the best card I can remember at Hollywood on Friday. Thats the stuff that needs to be marketed.

Only 3 rivals in that race ... but three quality ones anyway.

* Flying Paster's form going into the Kentucky Derby off of back to back blowout Grade 1 wins.

* Valdez was 3rd beaten 12+ lengths. He was a Grade 1 winner with five Graded Stakes wins on dirt.

* Relaunch was 4th after setting the sharp pace. He was 2nd to John Henry going 12fs on Turf a month later. Relaunch sired a Breeders Cup Classic winner - A Breeders Cup Distaff winner - and was also the dam sire of BC Classic winner Ghostzapper and grandsire of BC Classic winner Tiznow.

Believe it or not -- it was not even Spectacular Bid's best Ragozin figure.

In his 3rd to final start -- he won a rich handicap race going 9fs at Arlington Park under 130lbs in track record time of 1:46.20

A horse named Architect -- who was voted Illinois Horse of the Year -- and a winner of 13 of 24 lifetime races including several Graded Stakes wins -- was 3rd beaten 18 lengths while carrying 11 less pounds that day in a field of six. The 2nd place finisher was also a multiple Graded Stakes winner who earned over 400K in the late 70's and 1980.

Bid broke his own record for the fastest Ragozin figure ever with that race -- and it stood for over 22 years.

Beyers weren't published at the time.

Here's another. I'm sure there are probably others.

Sure, that's an impressive record, but look at the $$ he made. Who was he beating?

Plus, this "Iron horse" had 2 full years of rest during his career... In 91 and 98 he was obviously ducking some stronger competition.

Inflation is a bitch.

Here is a horse from 1913 who not only won 22 races in a season -- but was actually the leading money winning older horse for the entire year:

Here's a 3-year-old who won 18 races in one season -- one less than Citation:

Calzone Lord 11-24-2011 07:00 AM

Donald MacDonald (a gelding shipping from Santa Anita) was 3rd in the 1909 Belmont Stakes at age 3.

Here are a couple of cuts of his form from his 22 win season in 1913:

He raced long enough that he won a race at age 12.

I can't find his career record -- but I'm guessing he probably started several hundred times and won a great many races. 22 wins in one year is the best I've found for a horse who raced in the early 1900's.

How about Whisk Broom with a perfect 1913?

He won the Suburban Handicap at Belmont Park in 2:00 flat.

Pretty fast time for a 10 furlong race on dirt one-hundred years ago.

Sweep was the Broodmare sire of two Triple Crown winners (Whirlaway and War Admirel) -- he was the 3yo money leader in 1910 despite just five races.
