Tell us all about the day, ed... about Jimmy winning and where Sir Slick and Katy finished and how beautiful Wall Street looked and.... everything!

_ed_ 10-02-2010 11:24 PM

I will! But first, look for yourself. :)

Watched the first two and so I don't forget...

Wow Jimmy! I'm sorry but I thought the race caller was going to have a heart attack!

Beautiful win!

* * *

Wall Street!!!!! he was amazing and Keep the Peace was so beautiful (Bruce is pretty) and once again I am just so happy to see Fritzy Boy have a great run!

Is Vosne Romanee okay? Pulled up?

Okay will watch the last one now.

my miss storm cat 10-02-2010 11:44 PM

She flew!

I realize our boy was last but he looked alright, he was up there for a while...

(My son will NOT be quiet so I ned to watch it again later).

Katie though..... Jesus ***** Christ she is amazing!

Thanks for posting these ed. Please let us know what it was like being there when you have time. :)

_ed_ 10-03-2010 12:33 AM

Vosne Romanee was pulled up. The vet couldn't find anything wrong in the early tests, but he's obviously not himself. He's run 3 really bad races in a row now, and getting worse each time. I think the great old boy will probably be retired.

It was such an amazing day, but it started really weirdly. The winner of the first race was 164-1. The next two were 24-1 and 30-1. None of the results were making sense. No favourite finished in the money in the first five races!

But then Jimmy won the Guineas, race 6, and it was so good from there. That was the best I've seen him run. He's trained at that track, so the noise in the crowd was amazing when he hit the line in front. His trainer and jockey were so excited about him after the race. He's 9-1 for the 2000 Guineas now. I haven't seen anyone I think can beat him if he runs like that again.

Altered Image won race 7. He's just coming back after a year off with injury. He won by 2 lengths with his ears pricked in 1:09.15. VERY nice. :)

Wall Street looked like he was having a workout gallop for most of that race. It was such a good field, but he was doing it so easily all the way. It was obvious to me that he was going to win from halfway down the back. He seems to be getting better every race, and that's a bit scary.

Katie was my highlight, of course. She was disappointing in her first race back, and I wasn't sure she would be as good this season as she was in 2009-10. And she was a bit quiet in the paddock - when she won the two G1 races last November, she was hopping around and being naughty. And she was so far behind at the turn, I just gave up on her. Horses weren't really winning from off the pace that day. But then it all changed in a couple of strides. Apparently she broke 11 seconds for her last furlong. It's like she had a rocket strapped to her butt. I looked around the stands just after she hit the line and everyone was like this - . That was so amazing.

I love this picture. All four feet off the ground!

Baltika.

One to watch?

(Oh yeah I wanted to show you something... had you seen this?) :D

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DntyW...eature=related

_ed_ 10-06-2010 11:26 PM

Haha, no, I haven't seen that before! That's brilliant! But they have done stuff like that in the past, like these two:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZZrM_pS98E&feature=fvst
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoP_R0pKy6Q

I don't think they like being asked to lip sync. :D

And yeah, Baltika looked really good yesterday. Zardetto also won nicely on his debut. I don't know if they have enough time to get the earnings to go to the big Guineas races on Nov 6 and 13, but they both have very big futures. Maybe the Derby!

magic_idol 10-06-2010 11:43 PM

Sad News ED about the Stablehand RIP:(

The other one is brilliant of course.

I love this... Chris right around the 3:00 mark... :D

Unbelievably sad.

_ed_ 10-06-2010 11:54 PM

Yeah, that was very sad news. :( When I first heard about it on Saturday, it didn't sound too serious, but then there were complications and things quickly went downhill. Really awful.

chucklestheclown 10-07-2010 12:19 AM

Very close to home. RIP.

_ed_ 10-14-2010 12:26 AM

Not much happening in NZ racing this week.

That's lucky, because I'm a bit distracted - tomorrow I'm going to see The Naked And Famous play their first Auckland show since they released their chart-topping debut album. The show is sold out (not surprising - they come from Auckland, and we love them here), and it's going to be amazing! So excited.

I can't get enough of this band at the moment.

my miss storm cat 10-14-2010 12:49 AM

That should be fun! Liked the first one the best. :)

Hey ed any word on if Muse is going to play in Auckland? I know they have tour dates in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney and Perth... fingers crossed!

Did you see this?

http://www.racingandsports.com.au/ra...asp?NID=190227

It would be ****ing fantastic if it happened.

Too many I like in that field but this would be awesome. :)

_ed_ 10-14-2010 01:55 AM

I would be very happy with that result!

I don't know if Muse will come here in this tour - maybe not. :( But I've seen them here five times, including January this year, so I don't really have much to complain about!

Would have been nice to see the towers live, though.

ARE YOU TRYING TO GIVE ME A HEART ATTACK???

Oh my God ed, I need to pick my jaw up off the floor.

He is amazing still!

Almost, almost, soooo close.

Thrilled for the old man and I am so happy to be wrong about how he should have been retired.

Please just let them do right by this horse... please just let them know when it's time.

Brilliant. Cheers to the winner and all but he is just unbelievable!

Haven't heard anything about that for a while. I guess that's a good sign. But maybe people in the Melbourne thread might know more.

Back here, top jockey Leith Innes had a win on his first day back riding yesterday. :) He had been off the scene since he broke a couple of vertebrae in a nasty spill in early August. Great to have Leithal back doing what he does best.

my miss storm cat 10-22-2010 02:34 PM

Great news.

Good luck tonight (well tomorrow)

Katie Lee!

Time for me to disply some stupidity and ask something I've been wondering about... why isn't she running in the Cox Plate?

_ed_ 10-23-2010 03:26 AM

I was wondering that too. I found this:

Quote:

Katie Lee's short Australian preparation is only a shadow of the target originally in store for the mare this spring who was to be aimed at tomorrow's $3million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

“She was always coming,” Rogerson said.

“She was actually going to run in the Cox Plate but we had a wet Spring in New Zealand and we couldn't get the racing into her she needed because she doesn't go in the wet."
She ran really badly just then. :(

my miss storm cat 10-23-2010 03:42 AM

I can't stay awake any longer but want to remind you of something.

My point being it doesn't take anything away from her.

Even a champion can have a crappy day. I guess this was hers.

_ed_ 10-23-2010 04:51 AM

That does help, thanks. :) I'm still sure she's a champion.

It's just a shame that she chose to have that race today, when so many were seeing her for the first time. She didn't make a great first impression.

By contrast, this is the first time I saw her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mr7CJvzMmPQ

Beautiful.

This is silly but I wanted to show you this. Batch 6, 2nd place finisher.

He hasn't really don't anything yet... swimming and trotting, trotting and swimming and a gallop about every 3rd or 4th day... so here's his first barrier trial.

I never claim to be good at reading these things but to me he looks like he's out there having fun. Nice and easy.

(If it doesn't take you right to it click on the drop down menu to Oct. 19th).

That's fantastic! Thanks for that. He's a terrific horse and should do well in HK.

Have you heard any news about his nemesis, Military Move? His Derby win was amazing, and I'd love it if he did NZ proud up there. It's hard not to like him.

my miss storm cat 10-24-2010 12:37 PM

Great pictures and yeah of course I remember him!

I just checked...

Trotting every single day since 9/22... no swimming, no barrier trials (yet) and two gallops one of which was with Beadman.

I'll keep watching. He should have his barrier trial pretty soon. :)

_ed_ 10-25-2010 05:57 AM

Great, thanks for that. :)

Awesome racing down in Hamilton today. So happy I went down to watch it.

Sarten Memorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xBZoeXMnFcs
Lovely big chestnut filly We Can Say It Now beats the boys. She's a daughter of Starcraft, and she's only had four starts for two wins. She's 7-1 now for the 2000 Guineas and 2-1 favourite for the 1000 Guineas.

Banchee ran a bad race, but I think you can forget she ran. She flipped over in the gates. The vet cleared her as fit to run, but I think she was only fit physically - she seemed pretty stressed by the whole thing, so you can forgive her for not doing her best here.

But wait till you see this...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PetkprE1UZ0
He's...sensational! :D So brilliant, and so easy.

He's 3-2 now for the 2000 Guineas - so he'll probably start at the shortest price in a long time. And why not? He's SO remarkable.

_ed_ 10-25-2010 08:11 PM

Quote from trainer Roger James about HR...

"All the winners today have raced from on or near the pace but he's come from back in the field to defy the pattern. I think we saw a special horse in the making today. He changes gears, and only the good ones do that. We haven't seen him go the distance he's bred to go yet, and he's still learning. I've put a lot of pressure on myself and the horse, because I haven't kept it a secret, but I haven't been this excited about a horse since Zonda."

Apart from Sunline, Zonda's the best horse I've seen here in NZ.

my miss storm cat 10-25-2010 08:19 PM

Wow I just watched the replay...

He lives up to his name!

_ed_ 10-25-2010 08:39 PM

And he came back afterwards like he hadn't even had a race. He was throwing his head all over the place and prancing around. Amazing athlete.

He reminds me a lot of Xcellent. He looks a bit like him, they're both sons of Pentire, and he has that same powerful acceleration. I'm sure they'd be happy if he ended up being half as good, but they sound pretty confident he's something a bit special. :)

His main target is the Derby. Maybe he can be the first horse since 1990 to win both the 2000 Guineas and the Derby.

_ed_ 10-29-2010 01:08 AM

Odds for the 2000 Guineas (6 Nov):

Barside 26.00
Cellarmaster 8.00
Charma 16.00
Down Town 101.00
Encosta Diablo 26.00
Flash Hapi 81.00
Galaxy Star 101.00
Go Go Dingo 126.00
Hammer Down 10.00
He's Remarkable 3.00
Hoofit 21.00
Icepin 31.00
Jetset Lad 101.00
Jimmy Choux 8.00
Maradona 26.00
Mr O'Ceirin 51.00
Pericles 151.00
Rememba Howe 26.00
Santos 41.00
Sweet Suitor 16.00
The Prince 101.00
Twilight Savings 12.00
Undisclosed 26.00
Upsala 81.00
We Are Royal 126.00
We Can Say It Now 6.00
Zennista 16.00

HR still a hot favourite. I think Jimmy, Cellarmaster and Hammer Down should all be a bit lower, and Upsala at 80 is crazy.

my miss storm cat 10-29-2010 02:00 AM

He is remarkable but I think he's beatable... I think he might lose once or twice before becoming the champion he looks to be.

I'm picking Jimmy to win (and will root for Upsala even if...).:)

(As of right now anyway).

Encosta Diablo... why do I remember that name? Did he once have a fantastic win or something?

He did! He won a big 2yo stakes race last November. He was undefeated as a 2yo, but hasn't been so great so far this season - two defeats in a row in minor stakes company.

He's also beautifully bred - half-brother to G1 winner Vapour Trail and G2 winner Santagostino.

He'd have a chance at his best, but he's not running well enough at the moment.

my miss storm cat 10-29-2010 09:44 PM

Not to sound too stupid here but I don't know those names! :o

Well I hope he does okay anyway... no idea why his name stayed with me.

Why did Katie scratch? Any idea?

_ed_ 10-30-2010 10:29 AM

I think it was the weather forecast. She HATES wet tracks. They were predicting that it would be so amazingly bad. Opie decided to take 10 rides in NZ today instead of flying over to ride her, so that gave me a hint that she might not run today. Hopefully she'll get her day in the sun in Australia. :) But for now, at least WE know how good she is. :)

I don't blame you for not knowing most of the names! Apart from He's Remarkable, Cellarmaster, Jimmy Choux, WCSIN and the Wellington Guineas winner Barside (I don't think I pasted a link for that one. It was a very wet track, but a good win - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7F2o9VnWzQc ), it's mostly a bunch of good winners at MUCH lower levels. I think most of those will be outclassed.
