someone said something about the dow at 7k--i think it'll go that low as well, half of it's record high of last year. remember when nasdaq went over 4k? it's around 1600 right now.
it's going to get worse, the bottom has not yet been reached. and once it starts to turn around, it'll be baby steps along with two steps forward, one step back. i'd imagine the jump was over news on LIBOR, but it wasn't enough to end on a high note with a three day wknd.

This is crazy. I understand people need their cash but
this is just crazy.

Why in God's name is Coke and Johnson-Johnson dropping also.
What the heck has gone wrong with these companies...
Nothing. Their dividends alone are still good.

People will stop buying Coke... Crazy.

Danzig 10-10-2008 07:04 PM

it's not just hedge funds, but mutuals as well. my husband look at our 401k the other day. i told him not to, but he didn't listen...

It is what they call a sell program. Theses firms/funds put in a program and sell all 30 Dow Stocks. They have Buy programs too, but not too much these days.

My advice is if you are sitting on cash right now, good...well done. I would make a list of stocks you always wanted to own but thought it was too expensive to buy, when the market fundamentals return to normal, this will be one of the best buying opportunities we have seen in quite awhile.

Mortimer 10-11-2008 08:51 AM

Oh shove it..who asked you?

4 months ago you had the chance to move it , but because you're in it for the long run you left it alone.

It really doesn't matter where the market is until you cash out cash.

Buy low and sell high. I'm 55 and only plan on working 5 more years and I will jump back in with half of my total savings on afew selected stocks.

No gut, no glory.

you might want to get some sound advice from an investment expert. that sounds like a bad idea, especially if you're wanting to retire soon. stocks are for the long haul, not five years, and not with half your savings in five years either. you should be tilted more towards low risk, low return investments at this point, as you don't have the time to rebound from a big loss.
of course, you could always collect cans on the roadside....and walmart always needs door greeters.

I can retire now and if I lose half of my total worth I will still do well. I own my home and have not had a morgage payment since 1991.

Any money that I can make will only add to what I leave to my daughter.

Mortimer 10-11-2008 10:55 AM

I worked 3 days in my whole life.

I never have to work again...I invested hugely and wisely from my paper route earnings which was merely a cover for my in home robberies.

I am 12 years old.

I own 25 cities.

Mortimer 10-11-2008 10:58 AM

SportyFans, and I'm sure you know this---but anyways, the easiest thing to do in the whole wide world is i-net brag.

I guess it's especially fun to make one's self feel better when observing the plight of statistical victims.

But STEVEN H. CRIST already!!

Maybe it's because I say "bettah."

Well,if you have seen the Horror of Dracula ( and if you have not ..it's a must see) then I'm sure you recall that snotty little girl who said to the doctor.........."Well if you know what's wrong with her why don't you make her bettah!?"

Ridiculous,yet highly amusing.
