Racing Incident Report
On jumping, KINGS FALCON was taken back. ROMA PEGASUS began awkwardly, bumped the inside gate of its stall, then due to the slow tempo in the early stages proved difficult to settle and near the 1400 Metres was checked away from the heels of MORE BOUNTIFUL which was also proving difficult to settle. When ROMA PEGASUS was checked, it shifted in and caused crowding on its inside to LEGEND OF COLOUR. Shortly after this, MORE BOUNTIFUL, which was continuing to over-race, shifted out and bumped SLEEP WELL which in turn caused ABOVE ALL to be steadied and carried wider. In the Straight, THUMBS UP hung in, near the 300 Metres shifted ground and raced tight outside LEGEND OF COLOUR, then near the 200 Metres got its head on the side and shifted in behind LEGEND OF COLOUR as that horse shifted out. BEAUTY FOREVER was sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of BEAUTY FOREVER after the race did not show any significant findings. THUMBS UP, UNIQUE JEWELLERY and KINGS FALCON were sent for sampling.

Yes, I was watching Sunday morning's broadcast and the HK announcers interviewed John Moore, he said he was very high on him and the horse was setback by picking up a virus/bug in Peru. He's had a few setbacks infact, that was nice effortless move in a tough race off the shelf.

A very good race by Viva Pataca, I thought he raced without cover for the most part but it didn't really matter, in the end he showed his class.

Green Birdie in the Chairman's sprint was very unlucky, he was making a move up the rail and was stopped cold, otherwise he looked like he was getting up in time.

That's the beauty of HK racing, good prices, great riders, zero tolerance for hanky panky shenanigans...Also I mean which track boasts 4 better riders at the moment than Soumillion, Whyte, Beadman and Prebble? I'm convinced this is the best racing at the moment for fans. I'm sure you agree Miss Stormcat. Especially on Intl days... ;)

In addition this is a trip handicapper's paradise, Shatin in particular.

Good Ba Ba is in great form, if I was going to take a chance on beating him, John Moore's stable is in great form at the moment. That is where I would be looking, though that may be more wishingful thinking.

Stellar early entries for Audemars Piguet QEII Cup, Champions Mile

12 March 2009

Early signs indicate next month's Audemars Piguet QEII Cup and Champions Mile will lure several of the world's best thoroughbreds to Sha Tin.

Forming one of the most prestigious occasions on the international racing calendar, the international Gr.1 double bill is set for 26 April and both races attracted 478 entries from 23 racing authorities at the close of first nominations.

Supported for the eleventh year by the master Swiss watchmakers, the HK$14m Audemars Piguet QEII Cup is the season's springtime showcase. Over the past decade, the race has gone from strength to strength, won by an array of champions from South Africa, Japan, France, Germany and Hong Kong.

This season, 21 Gr.1 winners from around the world stand out from 80 entries, chief among them the last two titleholders, Archipenko and Viva Pataca, and the reigning Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup and Vase heroes, Eagle Mountain and Doctor Dino respectively.

The first five past the post in last year's Audemars Piguet QEII Cup are among the entries with runner-up Balius - since second in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Cup and winner of the Jebel Hatta in Dubai last week - and Packing Winner and Quijano also being primed for a return.

Other prominent entries include the prolific Niconero and Tuesday Joy, respective winners of five and four Gr.1 races in Australia and Jay Peg, successful in both the Dubai Duty Free and the Singapore Airlines International Cup last year.

Collection, the favourite for the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby on 22 March, is a new and exciting entry among the local names.

A restructuring of the Asian Mile Challenge bonus system and a 50 per cent cash injection to HK$12m looks set to ensure a strong field for the Champions Mile.

Almost 400 entries featuring 52 Gr.1 stars have been received, nevertheless, last year's winner and dual Cathay Pacific Hong Kong champion Good Ba Ba sets the standard, particularly over a course and distance at which he has recorded ten victories.

Interestingly, however, Hong Kong's Horse of the Year is on course for a rematch with one of his old foes in Creachadoir, the horse he narrowly beat in the CXHK Mile of 2007 and who has not raced since winning the Lockinge Stakes (Gr.1) last May.

Another notable potential rival is Vodka, a resounding winner of last year's Yasuda Kinen en route to being crowned the first female to win the JRA Horse of the Year crown in over a decade. Vodka will next start in the Dubai Duty Free.

Assessed the equal of Good Ba Ba in the 2008 World Thoroughbred Rankings at a rating of 124, Paco Boy, trained in Britain, is the leading European entrant; multiple Gr.1 winners Light Fantastic and Racing To Win are among several possible starters from Australia and the same goes for Mike de Kock's top class South African pairing of Kildonan and Russian Sage.

Supplementary entries for both races close on Tuesday, 7 April with selections announced the following day. Declarations to run are due Thursday, 23 April.

This is insane... I'm such a huge fan of Good BaBa and the Sacred one - and of course Armada (oh God and Egyptian Ra!)... someday though Enthused is gonna have a great win.

Don't know if this will be it... not making a pick here.

Nice horse though and one to consider.

Be safe, all of you. Cannot WAIT!!!

CSC 03-14-2009 10:16 AM

SC,

With Daylight savings I'll have to watch it on tape tommorow morning, my pick will be Sunny King, he should be a good price for this. With the weight he will be getting from Good Ba Ba and being it is a 7 furlong race gives hope to the Beadman/Moore supporters. Enjoy the race!

Racing Incident Report
On jumping, SACRED KINGDOM, GREEN BIRDIE and FELLOWSHIP were taken back. After the 1200 Metres, SUNNY POWER, which was over-racing, was carried wider by JOY AND FUN. Approaching the turn at the 800 Metres, JOY AND FUN was carried out to three wide and without cover when ENTHUSED shifted away from the rail from behind DIM SUM. Approaching the 300 Metres, GOOD BA BA, which was having some difficulty obtaining clear running, was steadied and shifted to the outside of JOY AND FUN to go forward. When questioned regarding the poor performance of ENTHUSED, D Whyte said his mount travelled well in the early and middle stages, however, when placed under pressure after straightening did not respond to his riding as it had in the past. He said ENTHUSED kept on until the 250 Metres and then commenced to give ground. He said at the 200 Metres he steadied ENTHUSED which was continuing to give ground when awkwardly placed between SUNNY POWER and JOY AND FUN. He said this was of little consequence as ENTHUSED was well beaten at the time. He said in his opinion ENTHUSED raced very "flat". ENTHUSED and GREEN BIRDIE were sent for an official veterinary inspection. A veterinary inspection of ENTHUSED and GREEN BIRDIE after the race did not show any significant findings. EGYPTIAN RA and GOOD BA BA were sent for sampling.

SCMP...

Redragtoabull becomes latest Derby casualty after freak accident

Alan Aitken

The pace of the Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby on Sunday threatens to descend into farce after the race lost both of its speed horses in the space of a day when Redragtoabull dropped out of the field with injury yesterday.
On the weekend, Tony Cruz-trained frontrunner Dream Horse was withdrawn after his owner did not want to proceed without brilliant Belgian rider Christophe Soumillon as the horse's partner.

That left Redragtoabull the most likely to take the field along in the Derby after a dashing frontrunning exhibition that almost stole the Derby Trial last time out. But an unusual stable accident has ended the John Moore-trained gelding's campaign for the classic and quite possibly most of his season.

"Redragtoabull fell over in his box and injured his spleen," said Moore yesterday. "We looked over him with the ultrasound and it appears he has suffered some internal bleeding as a result. The outlook for the horse now is that he needs two to three weeks rest in the stable, and that means we probably won't see him race again until the very end of the season."

Moore still has two runners in the Derby and reported that his frontline hope, likely hot favourite Collection, remains in good order: "Collection is in great form. He'll have one more 1,200m gallop this week and he'll be ready to rumble."

Redragtoabull's withdrawal has not only left the race tempo up in the air, it has also led to a jockey reshuffle, with his rider, Weichong Marwing, switching to stablemate King's Falcon, the runner-up to Unique Jewellery in the Derby Trial on February 15.

Three-time Derby winner Gerald Mosse has also been snapped up by Dennis Yip Chor-hong for Plan Ex, while Peter Ho Leung has gone for an injection of big-race experience for his Mr Medici, with Eric Saint-Martin taking over from local rider Alex Lai Hoi-wing, who handled the four-year-old in both his domestic starts.

The two withdrawals have given Derby starts to Caspar Fownes-trained Above All and Tony Millard's South African import, Galaxy Treasure, and the latter will have new club jockey Jeff Lloyd aboard on the first day of his licence.

Meanwhile, another Moore-trained star, six-time Group One winner Viva Pataca has had a change of plan heading for the Audemars Piguet QE II Cup next month.

"We had thought about keeping him ticking with trackwork and trials but I didn't feel the horse was quite as fit as he could be and the best way to get him hard fit is solid racing," Moore said.

"So he will switch back to a mile again in the Chairman's Trophy on April 5.

The mile is a touch short for him nowadays, but he still races well at it. That will do him more good than a 1,600m barrier trial and that then gives us three weeks into the QE II Cup."

Trackwork notes, SCMP...

RACE EIGHT, RATED 90+ (G3), 1,600 METRES
Eyshal was a bit disappointing in his barrier trial last week but his final gallop with stablemate Viva Macau was right up there with his best gallops. Jackpot Delight has done a lot more work since his last run and is moving much better, so expect a significantly improved run from this smart galloper. Bullish Cash is a specialist at this trip and has been knocking on the door of late - he's had a full complement of gallops. Best Friend had a nice turf trial at Happy Valley and then a pleasing final galloper over 1,200m (final 400m 22.9) on Friday. Jamesina has been going well all season and, although he's a sparingly made gelding, he holds his form well.

RACE NINE, RATED Terms (G1), 2,000 METRES
Collection's final gallop was an excellent piece of work and he's a worthy favourite. Thumbs up has been a significant improver, with a strong 1,200m trial and two subsequent gallops. Unique Jewellery has had a quiet trial and a number of gallops that have the Derby Trial winner ready to repeat. Roma Pegasus has had a full prep that's included a 1,600m turf trial, in which he finished a close-up sixth and well on the bridle. Legend Of Colour came from last in that trial for a good fourth and he has one of the best turns of finishing speed.

my miss storm cat 03-21-2009 09:02 PM

Special good luck wishes to the Delight boys... Jackpot and Vigor.

Royal Delight was brilliant. He was just getting the attention he so deserved when he won the Premier Bowl (I can't watch that race anymore... him, Ab Champ and Natural Blitz. Too sad) and was a brave 3rd to Sacred Kingdom in the HK Sprint.

That was in December (2007) and in January (2008) he broke down during trackwork. His leg was broken in three places and he couldn't be saved.

Anyway this owner... just hoping he has a good day cause I know he's had some bad ones.

Premier Plate... Best Friend and Jackpot Delight, either order (but will be thrilled if Viva Macau or Bullish Cash win)!

In the Derby I'm going to be a moron here and try to beat Collection. The horses I think could are Thumbs Up and Unique Jewellery.

Good luck to Mr. Yip with Plan Ex who I really like and who will be a major player eventually (but not here). Wondering about Roma Peg and Beauty Forever but yeah... I think only the two of them (TU, UJ) could beat the big boy.

Come home safe all of you.

brockguy 03-22-2009 09:25 AM

Some win by Collection in the Derby - he was very exciting when he was over in England and has improved again so much. Unbelievable balls on Beadman to make a mid race move like that and he still had a tremendous turn of foot..

Onwards and Upwards from here!

Racing Incident Report
As the start was effected, LEGEND OF COLOUR became fractious, kicked out behind and was slow to begin. UNIQUE JEWELLERY began awkwardly. Near the 1700 Metres, MORE BOUNTIFUL, which was proving difficult to settle, shifted out abruptly when being checked away from the heels of QUICK TOUCH. GALAXY TREASURE, which was following, was checked and shifted wider as a consequence. After the 1600 Metres, COLLECTION, which was proving difficult to settle, got its head up when being steadied away from the heels of MORE BOUNTIFUL. After entering the Back Straight, GALAXY TREASURE, which had been travelling wide and without cover and was proving difficult to settle, was allowed to stride forward. At the 1100 Metres, MORE BOUNTIFUL was checked to avoid the heels of QUICK TOUCH which was steadied away from the heels of MR MEDICI which in turn was steadied away from the heels of VIGOR DELIGHT which was awkwardly placed close to the heels of THUMBS UP which shifted away from the rail. Making the turn at the 800 Metres, MR MEDICI was left racing wide and without cover. At the 700 Metres, VIGOR DELIGHT became unbalanced when being steadied away from the heels of ABOVE ALL which shifted out momentarily. QUICK TOUCH, which was following, was steadied in consequence. From on straightening until near the 200 Metres, ABOVE ALL was held up and unable to improve. Near the 300 Metres, KINGS FALCON was momentarily crowded for room between QUICK TOUCH and UNIQUE JEWELLERY which shifted out. COLLECTION and THUMBS UP were sent for sampling.

I thought Beadman may have moved him a little early but the horse showed his class, I haven't seen a horse with a single move in a race as impressive as Collection's in awhile. He went from 3rd last to second in a blink of an eye, very impressive.
