MOON TAKES JAPAN HONOURS

By PA Sport Staff

Papal Bull and Halicarnassus failed to run to form as Admire Moon won the Grade One Japan Cup in Tokyo.

The two British runners came home a respective seventh and 17th behind the impressive scorer, who narrowly held off the Olivier Peslier-ridden Pop Rock in a nerve-jangling finish.

Odds-on favourite Meisho Samson was third.

Papal Bull, hardly the most straightforward of animals, missed the break once the traps opened and essentially faced a losing battle from then on.

Sir Michael Stoute's enigma was last rounding the first corner and although Ryan Moore devoured plenty of ground, he could not recover sufficiently to trouble the judge.

Mick Channon's Halicarnassus was hindered by a dreadful draw and the poor record of three-year-olds in the race and was never sighted under Darryll Holland.

The same could not be said for Admire Moon, however, who showed bags of stamina inside the distance to eke out another memorable success for jockey Yasunari Iwata, who won last year's Melbourne Cup on Delta Blues.

Second at Flemington on that day was ironically Pop Rock, who again lost absolutely nothing in defeat.

Nor did the well-fancied favourite Meisho Samson, who stuck to his task doggedly but lacked the finishing kick of the first two home.

The British duo may have been out of fortune but the outcome of the Japan Cup represented another huge fillip for Sheikh Mohammed as Admire Moon will spearhead his Japanese Darley operation upon retirement.

Have to say i'm slightly disappointed with 'samson'. I really did think he'd walk this. Well done to Admire Moon an his conections, though.

Regarding Papal Bull; Michael Stoute thought in intense atmosphere got the better of him. He had probably 'run his race' before he got to the gates. He is a funny character, maybe he just wasn't on one of his 'going' days.

From Bloodhorse's article:

Admire Moon, who has won five of his first six starts, is out of the Sunday Silence mare My Katies. Sunday Silence is also the broodmare sire of Vermilion, winner of the Japan Cup Dirt (Jpn I). He is likely to be retired to stud for Shiekh Mohammed, who bought him in June.

June!? He's owned the horse six months and he's retiring him? Can someone please find Sheik Mo a new hobby, as he's ruining mine?

do you really believe that anybody would bring this horse back to race at five?
17 starts, 10 wins, 11 million in earnings.

Sadly, even I'm not that naive, but I can still be annoyed. I just fail to see the thrill for an owner. But then, I also can't fathom having that much money...
