when the screen went blank at the end it was like they were flipping the bird to the audience.

That was Chase's intent. Build the suspense and make you forget that a deal was made with Little Carmine and Butchie, Phil was murdered, and the real end to Tony...Carlo flippin'. So it really wasn't happily ever after...just not the blood and guts finale most fans crave.

Storm Cadet 06-10-2007 09:36 PM

HBO online is clogged as well as HBO/sopranos site!

Scav 06-10-2007 09:38 PM

From HBO.com forum...decent explanation

Quote:

So in the end, Tony gets whacked.
That's why the screen went black and the music stopped.
As he told Bobby Bacala in the first episode in Season 6, Part II, you never see it coming.
We see it coming with the guy going to the bathroom and the two gentlemen entering the restaurant.
Meadow is saved because she can't parallel park the car.
Shocking.
Jolting.
Took me a few minutes to figure out what happened (actually my stepson had to explain it to me).
And so it ends.

Scav 06-10-2007 09:39 PM

And that the cat was "Ade" reincarnated, that was a good one also...

mclem10011 06-10-2007 09:41 PM

You make some good points.......

It will still be a bit hollow of an ending, if these great characters never are seen again. By the way, Phil's whackin was hillarious to me, i was howlin when his face was crushed, freakin classic! :D

MaTH716 06-10-2007 09:43 PM

There was too much nonsense tonight that did not need to be addressed. Janice and Uncle Jr, maybe she could start blowing guys under the boardwalk again. The cat was given way too much time tonite! The whole AJ thing has been ridiculous all season. Paulie acting all wierd to make you think he flipped or was working with NY. Meadow wanting to be a lawyer. Who gives a damn, maybe she should get a german sheppard to help her park the damn car! I am soooooooooooo ANGRY!

[quote=Scav]From HBO.com forum...decent explanation[/QUOTEIt's possible but those greedy bastards did it that way, so if enough money was thrown at them them they never offically killed Tony and they could still do the movie.

mclem10011 06-10-2007 09:48 PM

Very funny....

PP! I thought the cat stuff, was entertaining.

Scav 06-10-2007 09:50 PM

The cat, didn't Christopher have a cat? Another thing mentioned on the forum

mclem10011 06-10-2007 09:51 PM

Bottom line.....

I gotta say goodnight, my alarm is set for 5:50 for work. I hope we see more of Tony, and the rest of these fine characters! Take care all. :)

I am going through a thread that people are all fuming on it and people are giving opinions....I can't remember but I think he had a cat that looked exactly like that.

Storm Cadet 06-10-2007 09:54 PM

This exactly what HBO wanted...EVERYBODY is talking about the ending and will forever!

We will each put forth our own scenario:

Mine is the guy in the bathroom comes out with a gun like Godfather...but the guy with the hat is FBI undercover sent there by Tony's FBI connection and he shoots the gunman before he wacks Tony. The FBI doesn't want Tony killed...they want him in jail. Tony's FBI guy heard the wiretaps of the plan to kill Tony and he interceded. he felt he owed him one for the terrorist tip. IMO:rolleyes:

onebadbeast 06-10-2007 09:54 PM

the ending, what the f*******k was that about?

MaTH716 06-10-2007 10:02 PM

Off topic, The FBI guys girlfriend. Was that her panties, or was she in the most dire need of some landscaping work?

ztrain 06-10-2007 10:05 PM

That is the best question of the night, panties or bush! I have it on DVR so i will have to watch it in slow motion.

Scav 06-10-2007 10:22 PM

Man, people are BLAZIN up some of these forums regarding the Sopranos.....so hilarious

Scav 06-10-2007 11:28 PM

Rewatching right now, and I can't tell you how many times I have been grilled in that exact situation like AJ after he blew up his car? Absolute exact situation.....HOW MANY ****ING TIMES HAVE I TOLD YOU!!!??? I love it

Samarta 06-11-2007 06:13 AM

I thought the ending was brilliant.....my take is it's all tied to the song that was playing...."Don't stop believing." The guys that were in there meant nothing.....Meadow was the one that walked in the door and everything is okay....but there are so many spins on that.....but at the ending there is really no one that wanted Tony whacked, so if those guys had anything to do with it, they were protecting Tony....just my take...

I agree, the more I watch it, you just have to take it for what it was. HBO did a great job up'ing the tension level. From the Scarface type ending of Blue Comet, to the consistent need of keeping your eyes open, even when with your family. And, they kept their options open if they were to do another season or whatever they are going to do, because all in all, they really only off'ed Bobby.

ArlJim78 06-11-2007 09:35 AM

i'm sorry but I don't see the brilliance in that ending. come on, a blank screen leaving you hanging is brilliant? the truth is they didn't want to tie off things any more than that, either cause they wanted to leave options open, or couldn't come up with a truly brilliant ending where you watch it and then afterwards say, "man that was a great ending to a great series".
I'll say it again, ending the way it did with the heavy implication that something big was about to happen and then just going blank is like flipping off the audience.

on another note, I heard an alternate ending proposed on the radio this morning that made me laugh. Instead of the blank screen, the final shot is of a startled Bob Newhart waking up in the middle of the night, sitting up in bed and saying, "wow, I just had the strangest dream that I was a gangster in New Jersey". :D

That was good. I said it (running over his head) to my wife as soon as he got shot and when his head did get crunched she asked how I knew that. I gave you full credit of course...

if you want endless speculation and debate, then its the greatest alltime ending.

for a show that was billed as the FINAL episode EVER, I would have expected a little more on the finality side and less leaving it open for movies etc.

personally i don't think this style of show would necessarily translate very well to the big screen.

if they can find the right vehicle to keep it going I will be right there waiting for it however. hated to see it end.

yeah, great intell there. just like you said.
you have an FBI informant that you're sleeping with??

Seattleallstar 06-11-2007 10:37 AM

I really have no problem with the ending but it sure does make you hate AJ even more if anyone I wish he was wacked

Exactly, hopefully this guy with the intell has some horses to wager on also.....

FGFan 06-11-2007 01:17 PM

Typical David Chase, he always ends without closure, learned this in Northern Exposure...life just goes on. DC has a problem with closure got po'd about the whole russian thing from pine barrens, says he knows where the russian is but won't tell b/c too many peeps got so worked up.
you get to choose your own ending.
Members only jacket guy was not a hit man had to be FBI, what mob guy would still be in a members only jacket.
The cat was christopha...no doubt about that...him and Paulie at it again.
the trucker just kept telling us USA....
It was all so typical of Sopranos, rewatch the 1st couple of episodes.
I can go both ways...life just goes on...AJ is an idiot, Meadow with all her intellect can't park a car, Tony is going to be indicted...it all goes back to the life we know of Tony..missing melfi so he looks to AJ's shrink for therapy, Carmella just being carmella, Janice is evil.
or the black is tony got whacked...but I don't think so
Will be interesting to see if there is director commentary on the DVD.
Loved Philly getting whacked and the head popping. and FBI guy saying we are going to win this one...it was great....
I'm fine with the ending....I didn't expect DC to give us an ending, have watched to many of his shows to really think we would get closure on Tony, we did get closure on everything else.
No matter what it has been one of the best series I have ever watched, I will miss our Sopranos friends.
As far as Milch and his new show, well should have stuck with Deadwood.

Byebyemermaid 06-11-2007 05:39 PM

I had the pleasure of supplying the show for 6 years first aid and safety supplies.Gary Grill the construction coordinator was one of the nicest people to work with.I'm looking foward to work with him on the new show he'll be dealing with.I will miss going to stage x at Silvercup Studios and hanging out in the interior of Tonys house as well as his office at the Bada Bing which was located on stage 10.It was always a blast for me to see Tony put his feet up on the desk and know i tried it out also. All the sets are in storage so if they ever want to do anything again it's available. If anything can be brought to light about the ending is that Tony was where it matters most and that was with his family.I think Gandolfini career will be snakebit because he'll always be looked at as Tony Soprano one of the best characters tv has ever seen.

pgardn 06-11-2007 09:43 PM

This is absolutely the craziest crap I have ever heard.
ESPN, sports shows all over the nation rating the ending.
What does wackin people have to do with sports?

I just dont get it why the Sopranos got so much SPORTS coverage. Like wackin people is a sport.
