Pat,
I saw your post to Kev and just had to jump in.
Please excuse the intrusion.
As you know, I love science. It's all about trying to explain that which we don't understand. In our arrogance, we search for reasons so that our intelligence can continue the quests that curiosity leads to. Logic, mathematical constructs, acceptable methods, and yes, even patterns, all serve that.
To me, it seems, whether it's the bettor walking to a window to put down a $2 win bet on a long-shot, or a little old lady showing up for Mass every morning, that brings out the other side of the "humanness". It's an act of faith. It's something that hoping will happen, sometimes happens.
It's the reason why some click their ruby heels together and make a wish to find their way home from the yellow brick road.
Randomness? Maybe.
Fun? For sure!
All roads lead to the same destination.
Just my two pennies worth.
