I agree that it's just like music, where you could argue who the best band is? Its just a matter of who sounds good to your ear. However you do lose some credibility saying she was just a useful mare. The race she ran against Blame was one of the most exciting races I have seen in awhile at that point of time.

"Into the final furlong, ‘My Wife Knows Everything.’ ‘The Wife Doesn’t Know.’ They’re one, two. Of course they are,”

“To the outside, ‘The Wife Doesn’t Know. ‘My Wife Knows Everything.’ ‘The Wife Doesn’t Know.’ ‘My Wife Knows Everything’ more than ‘The Wife Doesn’t Know!”

Just reading this transcript alone, I couldnt tell who won the race.
This is Collmus career highlight. An obscure claiming race at Monmouth on a weekday. Yawn

Collmus sounds like he is on auto-pilot when he calls the races. There is no feel or emotion that Denman, Vic, Durkin, and Mark Johnson do when they call the races. Even Denman's Zenyatta! race you can sense the dissapointment and/or excitement from him.

If you want auto-pilot announcers....stick with Mike Battaglia

I wish she was still racing so I could continue to under appreciate her.

"Gaining ground"....I don't bet Turfway so I don't have to listen to Mike.

You wouldn't call being the voice of the Triple crown following a legend a career highlight ?

I'm going to miss Collmus from Monmouth. It's a great move for him and Churchill.

For the record, I love Dooley too. Eventually the day will come when Durkin hangs it up, I would love to see Dooley become the voice of NYRA.

None of his race TC calls were memorable than his Wifey race call.

Hearing Dooley everyday is a good thing. That said, he is as correct as any out there. He gets a little overboard sometimes with the descriptions but all in all, he is absolutely my number 1.

To each his own, I guess I am in the minority when it comes to Mark Johnson because I thought he was very good. I really enjoyed his calls.

I'm another one who is in the minority also...thought Mark Johnson did a great job

I'm one, that like with commentating/announcingin any sport, I want a guy that shows a little emotion and difference of tone in his calling.

I don't necessarily want Gus Johnson overkill, but Kevin Harlan is so awesome whennhe gets amped up.

Same for calling horse races.

I love Durkin because of his ability to bring some emotion and tone into his calls. Its also why I think Denman is overrated. He's not bad, but I like Durkin better for the reasons stated. Collmus is pretty good and wish him well.

Blasphemy to most people, but I love Paul Allen's race calls at CBY. A lot of people can't stand him, I love his calls.

I'm with a lot of people that I hope Vic gets the Monmouth gig if he wants it.

Who calls the summer weekend races at Gulfstream?

He also was on the mic incessantly. There's no need for an announcer to get on the mic with 3-4 minutes to post and commentate as the field goes to the gate. I know that's quite a bit more popular with international racing, but those few moments here have always been quiet and I like it that way.

Interesting. :)

Loved this post. I am not in the Durkin-as-God camp at ALL but that aside, I agree.
