Yeah, the only horses who generally Beyer 100+ at first asking end up being garbage pales like Curlin, Quality Road, Discreet Cat, Chilukki, and Formal Gold.

Anecdotes are not evidence (ask the FDA). Show me population figures. Didn't say NONE become graded stakes horses, only that not every freaking one of them did, maybe not even half of them. It would be interesting to see what the real fraction is, so that we could pitch our expectations appropriately.

The point is, no one's freaking out and saying Bind is the next Secretariat/Zenyatta, a Triple Crown lock or that they should start smelting his HOF statue already. All anyone has said is that it was an extremely impressive debut, and for some reason, that was enough for you to feel the need to come in the thread and start wagging your finger at people.

Travis Stone 02-21-2011 10:01 PM

Naming the horses who failed to go onto big careers after a triple digit debut is harder than listing those who did (this list starts with Uncle Mo)...

No, what you did was make a stupid remark about how many "fast 6f maiden winners" go on to be graded stakes horses. I gave you a list of horses who posted huge Beyer figs in their debuts, all while sprinting, and you back-tracked. It was what I expected.

If Bind goes to win multiple Grade 1's and ends up in the record books it would be too bad that we don't live in ancient Greece, because it would be only fitting--once you were cast off into Hades--that your punishment for all eternity would be to type out one of your patented, pedantic posts lecturing us on the racing career of the horse that lent it's name to the race destined to be known as the Bind Stakes.

After completing the tedious diatribe, all your efforts to post it would be met with a dreaded "connection timed out" message, dooming you to re-type the whole thing over and over and over and over again.

Your Greek name would be Carpus Tunnelis Syndromedous.

Fine work Rollo!

That is special stuff even for a troll.

Being stupid is no excuse for being wrong.

I would wager that there is a very strong connection between debuting high BSF's and graded winners, otherwise people wouldnt rush to Calder or Thistledowns etc. to grab up any Mdn Spl winners that runs an 80plus fig.

There was this trainer named Frankel who prospected the nations to bit tracks buying up debut winners with big BSF's. Frankel realized that if they ran fast once they would most likely run fast again. So he bought these types for Mr Gann and they had a wonder results.

Interesting editorial on Bind and his 105

It is an interesting editorial, and he does make an important point. However, doesn't the figure get a whole lot easier to make when the two races before that on the card were also 6f dirt races....as was the 5th race, which was a stake featuring several veteran horses?

I was also confused by the fact that he pointed to blinkers as a possible reason that the 6th place finisher improved....even though that horse's assigned speed figure was actually one point lower than in his previous start.

NTamm1215 02-24-2011 01:04 PM

Watchmaker's getting far too much credit with you using the word "interesting" to describe anything he writes.

Indian Charlie 02-24-2011 01:12 PM

Yeah, you both have good points.

I thought his discussion of the horse that went backwards was weird.

And Nick, the interesting thing was that he even wrote that in the first place.

I saw another blooper in another editorial there today as well, speaking of mistakes.

It was Hovdeys piece about the San Luis Obispo just run last week. He mentioned Bien Bien giving Fraise all he could handle in the Hollywood Derby, when it was Paradise Creek that beat Bien Bien.

That was the single most annoying day at the races I've ever had.

Exactly. That was hardly a field of plugs he beat, but even it it was, you can't argue with the timer.

No Triple Crown trail for Bind

Sounds like they are sorta leaning towards an allowance at KEE.

It's a silly piece of writing. I've heard the Remsen figure being questioned before Mucho Macho Man won last weekend - you had like four 9f dirt races that day and consistant weather.

Don't think that really works for Greek. Mish mash there of real and fake Latin, Middle English and Anglicized Greek. Karpos Sundromites would do the job better I think...

SOREHOOF 02-24-2011 06:40 PM

At any rate that was impressive. Bind didn't look like he was being asked. He didn't look like he wanted to stop.
