He is no Spectacular Bid YET.

Nor will he be. You can put that on the board.

Flaxen Mane 08-30-2006 01:36 PM

I'm not so sure that he is going to be raced next year. My reason for thinking that is.... They seem to be grooming Discreet Cat to be their big one next year. He (at this point) isn't being pointed to any of the BC races, which makes me think they are brining him along for the Dubai World Cup. I doubt that they are planning on pitting the two against one another.

Slewbopper 08-30-2006 03:11 PM

My own opinion, which is totally selfish, is what I think WE, the fans, would love to see......

Forget Dubai. Here is his 8 race G1 schedule as a 4 yo. Rest him after the BCC win until February. Run him in the Donn and Big Cap (He can take on the Lava Man on the LM's home turf). Bring him East for the NYRA V (Met Mile, Suburban, Whitney, Woodward, JCGC). Finish his career with the BCC at Monmouth. 5 of those races are handicaps. Maybe we could see a horse carry 130 again by the time the Whitney rolled around. Who was the last? Cigar? Skippy?

As I was saying, I am being selfish, plus I would be within driving distance of his last 6 races.

why? bid was outstanding at two, while bern didn't make his debut til three. bid was a dual classic winner, and his last loss ever was to a t.c. winner.
won 'em all at four, set the still standing world record at 10f, and then his walkover.

slotdirt 08-30-2006 03:46 PM

Anybody who thinks Bernardini is going to somehow win 26 of 30, be a three time champion, set track records out the wazoo, and win in a walkover is downright delusional. The Bid was 10th on the Bloodhorse's list of thoroughbreds; somehow I doubt we'll be talking about Bernardini in the same breath at any point in the future.

No one has come close to him in the last 26 years. Hell, he broke the 1 1/16 track record at Laurel by a second as a 2 yo. He set a track record as a 3 yo, and 5 as a four year old carrying between 126 and 130 in those 4 yos races. The horse was 24 for 24 from 7/8 to 1 1/4. The only possible knock on him is that he didn't win at 1 1/2. Bid lost the Belmont because of a pin and a pinhead, and the JCGC to a great older horse in Affirmed that never lost a race once he had the lead. Affirmed lost the Travers, but not the lead.

Slewbopper 08-30-2006 04:13 PM

Trivia question.....who is the only horse to win the Suburban twice since Kelso in '61 and '63? It is kind on topic, considering where this thread has gone.

Danzig 08-30-2006 04:58 PM

crusader won twice, but that was in the 20's...far as i've found, those are the only two 2x winners.

Betsy 08-30-2006 05:18 PM

I don't care if Bernardini ever becomes the Bid or not. There's only one Bid, one Slew, one Secretariat. It is enough for me that Bernardini has the potential to be a truly great horse. If it's not enough for some people, so be it. Also, I don't care if he becomes popular with the general public. He's got a pretty good following at the track, from all reports, and that's what I care about.....

Danzig 08-30-2006 05:22 PM

who knows...maybe someday they'll be saying 'he's the best since bernardini' ... 'ah, he's no bernardini...'
i knew bernardini, bernardini was a friend of mine...you sir are no bernardini.

There are those who will not acknowledge excellence, no matter what. I was at the Meadowlands in 1979 or 1980. I am not sure of the date right now. I do remember that The Bid was being honored as a great runner on the same night that the harness superstar Niatross was being honored. Each was being paraded around the track; Niatross was the recipient of cheers and Spectacular Bid was the recipient of jeers. He was paying for his trainer's bragging. I cannot understand that behavior. The horse was a true champion, someone special. How can anyone actually dislike a horse? It is like disliking Lassie or Elsa the Lioness. Animals bring so much to our lives. Anyway, I am rambling, but I swear that there are people who dislike Bernardini because he is not Barbaro. Seattle Slew suffered this because he was not Secretariat.

A lot of people in the media and everyone is raving about the horse. They are calling him names such as a superstar and a superhorse. I think he definitely has the potential to be the greatest we've seen since the Bid. He's got a heck of a lot more chance than most of the others. He's not great yet, but he's on the verge. If he wins these next two races, then he will be considered great by almost all.

Gander 08-30-2006 05:50 PM

If he keeps racing, theres no saying how good he can be. Not sure how anybody can say he will never be as good as Bid. How do we know?
As great a 3 year old as he is, shouldnt we expect improvement when he reaches 4 and packs on some weight?

This is what we've been waiting for a very long time. Hes like Ghostzapper but it actually appears like they will run him more than 4 times a year. Hooray for that.

I definitely agree with you theire. I don't understand how they can be like that either. I mean how can you like racing without liking the all of the horses that run?

dr. fager 08-30-2006 05:56 PM

I don't think anyone is saying he's not a great 3 year old, but you're comparing him to a horse who was Champion 2-Year-Old Colt, 1978.
Champion 3-Year-Old Colt, 1979,Champion Older Horse & Horse Of The Year, 1980, when he went undefeated, (nine for nine). 3 years of dominance.

putting the chicken in front of the egg....and the great thing about horse racing us bs'ing on here doesn't hurt their feelings one bit.

If you had a three horse race with Bid, Slew and Fager, Bid would win every time. Is Slew Fager's rabbit, or vice versa?

Slew and John are my all time faves, but Bid is the best horse I have ever seen run.
