I think you are probably right about that. But why shouldn't a church donation count? If a guy makes $100,000 a year and he gives $2,500 to a church and an additional $2,500 to other charities, that is a total of $5,000. I think you should count the whole $5,000. Any way you look at it, the guy gave away $5,000.

It's the endgame that counts, which probably screws us both. To tell you the truth, I enjoy the Left-Right debate, but at some point..and perhaps the charity donation tally is the line in the sand...you can't make everything political.

Overall, Catholics are probably the Christians that most pay attention to what Christ said about the poor. Unfortunately, there are Conservative Catholics (like Alan Keyes etc.) that ignore it.

See, Progressives don't hate the Government, and they expect the Gov't to do a lot of necessary things with their tax money. They expect Gov't to do almost all these things that charities do (but the Conservatives won't let the Gov't do it.) For instance, we believe in a National Healthcare system to take care of kids with cancer. You want to send a few "deserving" kids to ST. JUDES in Memphis. We see that as your attempt to judge which poor people are deserving. That really is the difference here. Progressives aren't as interested in judging people who are poor. Private charities are often a way for Conservatives to be hyper judgemental with the money spent on the poor. One is def. a charity case. Those are always microchipped, cuz they don't want them coming back.
