i'd imagine that unbridled song gets labelled as producing unsoundness because he was an early retiree, and many of his best are as well-but that may be a result of demand for his sons at stud, moreso than any facts about unsoundness. as soon as they show any real promise (rockport harbor) the talk starts. as soon as there is a setback, more often then not, the decision is made to retire the horse rather than risk more injury, or more losses.
however, he had a couple horses on the the derby trail this year-old fashioned didn't make it into the gate, and now dunkirk is said to be injured. dunkirk also has very few lifetime starts-which i feel makes it laughable to say that the rigors of racing are to blame for his injury-he hasn't exactly done a lot of racing.

but i do find it funny in an ironic sort of way that people talk about breeding unsoundness...but when a good horse who has also exhibited fragility is retired, there are many who say well, just breed the right mare to him, it'll be ok. ghostzapper is a good case in point-when he went to stud, and i questioned why anyone would want to send a mare to a horse that could only manage three/four starts a year, my sanity was questioned. he was a fast horse, so unsoundness be damned was the gist of it.

Look at Omnitraders record.... Wow! 119 starts!

Did notice quite a few never even made it to the track. Also Zoftig had two foals and neither made it to the races.. too bad.

Well, they sure managed to keep it "hush hush" so far. Still not a word in the news, at least none I could see.

Hope it all goes well and that Saturday wasn't the last time we will see him run.

Or is that too difficult for you to accomplish, Prince Valiant?

On topic: Dunkirk is done and Riot redboarded an injury.

Gross, what a headline.

This from a raceplayer and fan's point of view, I thought the maintenance crew did a remarkable job getting the track ready to provide a memorable day of racing, it was night and day when you compare it with Derby day. It would be very unfair suggest the track condition may have been a cause for any injuries that may occurred. Sorry I just had to get that off of my chest.

Sorry if this comes off as egocentric, but "At the Races" is a three hour daily radio news magazine about Thoroughbred Racing that airs on North American-wide satellite radio with a listnership of more than 20,000 any given week. The 'word in the news' came on "At the Races", and while my record with stories of this nature isn't 100% perfect, it's pretty darn close. When I have it first, I almost always have it right.

I think what happens is a lot of Unbridled's Song's need time to grow into their frame but they are so fast so quick that few can resist the temptation to run them early. So they rack up early wins but were on the track before they were fully ready and as a result get injured. The ones that don't get to the track until later are actually relatively sound. If the breeding fascination was on horses that run well at 4 and 5 instead of 2 and 3 then I think Unbridled's Song would have a very different reputation as there wouldn't be the incentive to rush the talented ones to the track.

one thing is for certain, he passes on his talent as well as any other sire out there today!!

Zig brings up a good point about Ghostzapper too... and Big Brown could be the same way.

Bobby Fischer 06-09-2009 09:45 AM

said trainer Todd Pletcher in a release: “We anticipate a full recovery and a return to racing later this fall.”

is this a realistic timeline?

Pletcher is like one of those dolls with a string in his back that you can just pull the string and get a canned phrase.

Linny and I agree on the surface conditions . If they can't prepare a softer surface within the environment they should find a surface they can handle . Sounds like you have the surface agenda .

yes, he does. and there's no way they went to the price they ended up paying for dunkirks potential on-track abilities. they get one good race out of him as a winner, and he'll command a good stud fee and get some nice mares. hell, he might get that now with his two gr 1 placings and his pedigree.

nice edit, i saw your original post without the last line...after reading many of your posts, it's apparent who has the agenda. makes me wonder why you're in the game that you seem to despise so much.
