Hmmmm, quite a dilemma indeed. Would be helpful to know more details about what led to this downturn in your life and if there are other players still in your life.

In a nutshell, I am guessing that blowing a couple grand at the track isn't the answer to your problems. Win or lose you will eventually run out of your original stake and the only thing you will have accomplished is having $2000 less for the judge to divide between you and the ex-wife or soon to be ex-wife. (I am guessing there is an ex-wife or soon to be ex-wife because no wife would give her hubby the ok to play the horses for a living after losing his job.)

Invest the money in finding a new job. As boring as this sounds everyone knows it is the smart thing to do.

(Or buy 2000 Powerball tickets. The jackpot is $150 million. If you win....remember who gave you the advice that changed your life.....)

Curt dont do it. Save the money, keep saving, find a new job, keep saving, become ceo of grocer company, keep saving, Retire from said job and play ponies full time.

For this to be successful, we need to assume a number of factors are in place:

1) you have the requisite handicapping skills

2) you have the requisite money management skills

3) you have nuts HUGE enough that you'll be able to not only win but win under extra pressure.

Of course you might have a good run and make a ton of money.

The problem is that you're clearly not ready. By this I mean that you haven't grown a bankroll. Had you done so over a period of time and had the confidence of knowing that you could do it, you'd probably be good to go; assuming you could handle the added pressure of knowing that you had no money coming in if you lost. Then again, if you'd grown a bankroll, you probably wouldn't be looking to work for a living.

the best advice you will ever get for free, take this man's gift and concentrate on finding a job. the horseracing will still be here on-line when you are ready to play after a hard week's work. good advice Fats

So let me get this right. You want to make money from horse racing and you are asking a bunch a strangers this question.

If you could do this to make money you wouldn't have to ask this question. You would already know.

sorry to be blunt... but, wake up

I agree wholeheartedly and scanned this entire thread purposely to determine if anyone else had made this realization.

These chains are all in the south and have no strores here in Ohio.

Look, if I go to the track for 7, 10 days and am getting smacked around I have enough sense to quit. Just with all this time, and the attitude I have, well you know.

You lost your job, you have a couple thousand bucks to your name and you want to take a run as a professional gambler?........ What, you're forced into this drastic step because NASA's dragging their feet on your application to be an astronaut?

Based on your comment that "their are planty of other to work for down their", it would seem that corporate training for a position of this magnitude pretty much ends after mastering that challenging customer service hurdle of "paper or plastic?"

Life is short. Go for the glory, Spartacus. And do keep us posted about life at the campground.

and odds are you won't. probably better odds than taking a couple grand and making a run at being a pro horse player.

I've had some success at the windows these past couple of months. I am actually considering a 3 to 4 week try at playing for a profit. A serious 5 day a week job with a plan, a budget. Question is, what should be my bet(s) of choice? I'm thinkin straight win, pick 3's. I'm gonna budget myself to $200 a day max. Am I crazy or would you consider doing the same thing? Have any of you done something similar?

Buy an entry into a high-dollar handicapping tournament. You might get lucky and take down the top prize, or one of the lesser prizes. You have a better chance doing that than trying to make a living handicapping on two hundred bucks a day.

Preach it,Brother!

But seriously....if I'd followed Steve's and Hooves plays I'd have money in the bank....probably!

The word is CAUTION,Curt.........get your UI first....then use maybe 400 of your stake to see if you can make up some big money. It's way better to have a "cushion" than living week to week! Take care.

dagolfer33 05-14-2009 10:55 PM

Hopefully, you just played Herks pk4 at LS....if you did you would already be up a grand.

That is cold. I would suggest, though, that you buy as many tomatoes as you can haul and sell them on the road leading into your home-track. You will, in a way, be making money off the ponies, and you also will be gaining valuable life experience.

hockey2315 05-15-2009 12:50 AM

Live poker would be a superior option if you had the requisite skills - much more beatable - very few people are capable of making a profit from horseplaying - basically you have to be a superior handicapper who can find hidden value and a creative bettor who can exploit those valuable opinions in a way that overcomes take-out and the efficiency of the pools. To be honest, if you were capable of doing this at this point, you wouldn't need to ask questions like "what kind of bets should I play?"
