The correct terminology is by a significant sire and out of a mare from a modest family.

Oh and about the turn of the century thing, since I believe technically it began in 2001 not 2000 as commonly thought (though I'm still gonna think of 2000 as the dawn of the new whatever) doesn't that mean we're talking top 10 from 2001-2008? I mean it doesn't even include Tiznow's 2000 season or Giant's Causeway. Sneaky there, Jess.

Secretariat and Riva Ridge were syndicated because it was the only Penny Chenery could pay the taxes on the estate she inherited from her father. Estate taxes at the time ran about 60% of the value of the property and she hoped to continue to operate the farm. To keep the farm she had to sell it's teo most significant assets.

Nashua was syndicated in large part because of the the sudden death (by gunshot) of his owner. He did run a complete 4yo season ending with the JCGC. The Woodwards had a long association with Claiborne and one might assume that had Woodward not been killed that Nashua would have stood there, not at Spendthrift.

Other members of the CAS (Curlin apologist society) Paul Moran and Gary West are going to be hard pressed to find topics to write about now that big Brown and Curlin are retired.

Scoop Paulick, the Matt Drudge wannabe and the Equidaily copycat.

I have a hard time believing Curlin is going to Lane's End...they already stand Smart Strike, would that be a smart move? It would take away a good amount of business from him

Linny 11-20-2008 11:26 AM

No idea if Curlin is going the LE but it would be no shock. Farms stand sire/son combos alot.
I guess they figure if a son is going to take business from a sire then better to have that business stay on the same farm. Also, they may be looking long term at the son taking over the legacy of the sire one day.

Danzig 11-20-2008 01:21 PM

smart strike will be 17-not terrible old, but he's certainly no spring chicken. makes sense to try to get what is his best son thus far to stand there as well. some will want to go to curlin, as they want to get in on a 'hot' commodity-while others will send a mare to smart strike, as he's already proven, while curlin is nothing more than a question mark right now.

This historical argument is legit, but Curlin's Dubai World Cup was pretty awesome, and his Man O War wasn't anything to sneeze at either.
