I don't think this board likes youth, just an opinion from a soon to be 21 yr old.

Seriously, don't be this gullable. Bold claims is saying Shane Laviolette is a good jockey, not that you are putting $500 on a horse or whatever this clown is doing

I am 24 years old, been involved with the sport since I was 12, worked for various trainers, racing organizations, and make my living now in the horse racing biz. I also went to college and graduated with a degree in the horse racing biz from the U of A. My mentor also has bred many champion horses and has held very high positions in the industry and he tries to teach me as much as he can about the game. I believe I very much understand the horse biz (including the breeding), its just that betting isnt my thing... I make money off the people who bet.

Please dont tell me you have to be a certain age to understand horse racing.

Also, Nobody who gambles makes money. period. doesnt matter if you are 24 44 or 84. A few people who make intelligent CALCULATED risks (Crist, etc.)make a living betting horses. That is different than gambling.

IMO "CALCULATED RISKS" and gambling are the same thing, your still partipating in a game/pool of chance happenings. You can't be a Calculated risk taker and not be a "gambler", if you were then you should have the greatest mythical bankroll in the business. Don't want to step on anyones toe's but that's just my 2 cents..... and i'm 25

I don't discriminate by age. If you're a moron it doesn't matter if you're 10 or 85.

Grits 03-26-2007 08:25 PM

I agree with what you are saying. By definition the two are one in the same. And it doesn't matter whether all of your dollars are being co-mingled everyday with the NYSE or through the wagering pools of your favorite racetrack. It is all gambling.

Some are better risk takers than others, though in living each day, one has to know when to use speed, and when to apply the brakes.

If you have no ability to slow and apply the brakes, you'll live your entire life from hand to mouth, trying to keep something in the account, hoping you end each month--with more money than month.

Many do not, they spend most of their time one step ahead of their creditors, never able to achieve beyond their addiction. There has to be a degree of moderation in any endeavor where gambling is key. It's hard to accept, but I believe it true.

by definition the two are the same. but they are not the same. people who truely understand the calculated risks, the percentages and how to correctly use all the information make a living in the pari-mutuel game. i am def not one of those people. but I just use betting as a form of entertainment when I am at the track. there are very few people that do it right. and I'm not talking about people who just come out ahead for the year or make a 10,000 profit for the year. I am talking about people who make a substantial living through wagering on horses. there is a difference between those few individuals and people who just gamble.

a) most degrees in ANYTHING are worth just about the cost of toilet paper
b) The difference between you and PG1985 is how you represent yourself
c) ALOT more people make money gambling then you realize, the people that say this just don't educate themselves to understand the element, matter of fact, most of them are just intimidated by it and you the statement "You can't make money at this" as a barrier
d) I can go on forever picking this post apart about what you know about the game, but let me some it up in this, 12 years around horses, about 6-7 of them you actually had a clue about life in general, EXPERIENCE is the only way to learn in this game
e) You are defending someone for no absolute reason. The guy is a clown and went from attacking people to having normal conversations to attacking people to knowing it all. It actually has the feeling that it is Blockhead/Secretariat (who knows after the Server crashed if Byk still has him blocked).

on a more serious note, i see what you old folk mean about experience... but being young and rebellious i just cant stand when people think the younger generation doesnt know anything because they havent been there for long

But there is a certain knowledge, or lack thereof that comes with following this game.
There are members of this forum that have forgotten more about this game than most of us will ever know. And then there are those who think they know everything about everything. It just so happens that 2 of those fellas are young, and one of them is 27 :D.

I just turned 28.

I was the same way when I was 21-24, big wig, thought I had the world by the balls, then the man steps on your own and says "I GOT YOU BY THE BALLS" and then you want to retire. :)

Hilarious.

Let me tell you some things that I have learned with my 28 years of life

The younger generation doesn't know a damn thing, and that includes myself.

1) You are not given respect, you earn it
2) You create your own karma
3) Karma is the biggest bitch on this planet, their is none bigger
4) Experience is the ONLY knowledge on this planet, a book tells you ZIP, matter of fact, they say that you only retain 15% of what you read
5) It isn't what you know, it is who you know
6) Until about the age of 45-50, open up your eyes and ears and shut your f'n mouth

very true in many cases...esp. when trying to put the 'greatness' of a horse or a race or a trainer in the context of history.
