As far as this week.....Ramon is riding at AQU during a time of bad racing and is getting first call mounts....sure he is gonna be successful at a meet when he is riding against the likes of Diane Nelson and Andrew Lakeman.....

He earned $14,409,988 by riding 3rd class meets and picking up scraps.

Dettori is not the #1 rider......this guy is hand fed the TOP mounts overseas....yes he is skilled....but definetly not the best...not even top 3....but if you need a reminder go back and watch his ride on Swain...

Mike Smith has been absolutely horrendous since coming back from the West Coast and " Mike Smith off " has become virtually an automatic play. It's obvious you haven't seen him ride but you could have at least looked at his stats. I'll give you a hint....they are horrendous.

Jose Santos is also riding flat out awful right now and has the numbers to prove it. He is getting left with virtually every mount and getting in trouble just as often. Shawn Bridgemohan, despite hiring NY's best agent in Drew Mollica is also struggling for mounts and winning at under a 10% clip. His riding has been less than stellar.

This person isnt serious....Smith,Santos, and Bridgmohan?......They are in the 2nd car of the horrible jockey train.....Diane Nelson,Andrew Lakeman, and Rudy Rodriguez reside in the first car......Herbie Castillo is the conductor.

I miss the old days at River and Turfway when we had Herbert, Woods, Outz, Cooksey, Tolio, Martines all battling it out. Now that was a jockey colony--ha ha.

Yes...he wins a TON of races at Delaware....and their purses are good down there..thats where the earnings come from.....lots of wins in mediocore races....and he rides all the good horses....his competition there is weak...outside of Jeremy Rose there aren't any half decent jocks at that meet.........it's like Russell Baze....wins a ton of races at bad meets....is Baze a bad jock? Not at all......is skilled.....but the guy has ONE grade I victory in all those wins.....

I remember Garrett Gomez and Jose Valdivia Jr. at Ellis Park. I think it was the summer of 91...maybe 92.

If I was a jock and could earn $14mm a year without traveling a whole bunch I would.

He earned 10% of that.

I know, I should of said his mounts earned that. So he earned $1.4mm. Prado earned $1.9mm. Not that big of a difference.

Prado won the Derby and at least one BC race as well. Somehow I think Ramon would like to be competitive in those races.

I agree, but with a Derby win and a BC win Prado only earned $500k more. It is all about what you want I guess. Prado goes all over the nation. Ramon basically stays at home.

stonegossard 01-22-2007 02:07 PM

Man...and I thought I was rough on Mike Smith.......doesnt seem to be too popular on here.....getting put on a list with Juan Leyva and Eddie Nunuez....ouch

CHANNING friggin' HILL has a VALET?!? I'm in the wrong business. Why God Why did I grow past 5'3"??

Gander 01-22-2007 03:35 PM

Jockeys will always be a funny debate. They are great when you need them to win and they come through for you, but they are so very bad when they lose on a horse you need to cash. I get a kick out of people praising a jockey one day, then a week later the same person calling that same jockey a bum.
Horseplayers are so predictable.

Every rider has to have a valet. Some share. Who do you think brings their tack out?

Gander 01-22-2007 03:45 PM

I liked a horse he was on yesterday in the 7th, Mhera Maskey. Thought the horse was lone speed and would outsprint Mama Theresa. Boy was I wrong. Not sure if Hill didnt try to make the lead or the horse was just plain not right. It was the first time ever this horse showed no speed.

I held off making a wager on him because I felt 6/1 was not "good value" even though this is the horse that I wanted to play more than any other horse all weekend. I would have went in at 8/1 or higher.

ah, I thought you meant a valet, like a personal driver/butler/chef/man groomer extraodinaire.
I only feel SLIGHTLY better about my career choice then.

I agree with you - Mike Smith off has been the play. I do have to give Mike credit for his "One Good" ride in "06" on Noble Stella on closing day at the SPA. Gave me my biggets score of the meet for one race and set up the final P4 of the meet for me($7.9G's) so I have a little warm spot in my heart for him.

C Hill being 18 has been up and down, but see potential there.(IMO) lately he's been riding just fine.

I agree. When he first got to NY he was very mediocre, but very quickly he started to adapt, and it was clear unlike a lot of young riders that come to town he was working hard to improve his riding. When the turf course opened later, and he probably had little to no turf experience, he was awful at first. But slowly he started to improve. Not that he's great on it, but he clearly shows improvement, which is all one can ask for.

Prado was 0 for 6 in the Derby before this year.

Prado was 2 for 48 in the BC before this year.

But anyway....

Some people might also say that Barry Sanders wasn't great. After all, he never played in a big market or the big game. Whatever.

Oh yeah, 0 for 9 in the Preakness.

Not bashing Prado...I like him...just defending Ramon against those who apparently need a history lesson.
