I must say everyone of the expressions you note above are DEAD ON hahaha and I'm laughing about it. But you forgot, "CD Player HOLDS THE LINE on the front end BUT HERE COMES Saratoga Paperclip rallying on the grandstand side!!!!"

All this Dooley stuff has me laughing now

yeah we disagree but I'm also laughing out loud thinking about some of the Dooleyism's. He is just a little too much like Gomer Pyle for me. Shazaaaam!
I wish I could think of more of them right now. I'm going to watch some replays and see if I can come up with so other funny ones.

1-tom durkin -when its on the line for a big one no one better, becomes disintrested at lower races, but understandably so after you call so many
2-john dooley- underated-always makes the race call sound like its important at all points of the race to keep the tension high, makes every race call sound important from a 5000 claim to a stakes,
3-vic stauffer-has some of the better calls at the finish of races, but during a race sounds like the average person calling a race by sound of voice but very detailed and accurate in his calls.and he makes you feel like hes one of us
4-michel wrona-best announcer to me with a english-irish-australian- accent, accurate calls, keeps you intrested thru the whole race
5-trevor denmen- i could have put him in 3rd just as easily as here, great race caller but wrona gets the nod by a slight edge
6-luke kruytbosch-this guy has a voice that was ment to call races, sounds exactly what you would expect a race caller to sound like with the tone of his voice, unique and very good voice, but can sound repetitive at times
7-dave rodman- great caller also
8-richard grunder- underated this guy needs to be on a bigger circut

worst
1-mike battaglia-it cant get no worse, i cant believe they let him call kentucky derbys at one time, but im sure a very nice man and respected inthe industry just not calling races
2-tony calo - the beginning of his calls make me just shutter, the worst and the rest of the call is average at best

just my opinion

..When I say technical, I am referring to everything except the glamorous voice and vivid adjectives or anything else that is cosmetic about the race call. A good technical race caller paints the best picture of how the race is unfolding...it takes great forecasting and handicapping ability and Denman is leaps and bounds better at it than Durkin....I've seen several races in New York where a jockey dropped his stick, or there was significant bumping, or a horse was closing from the clouds and Durkin never saw him....

..great example was this year's Wood Memorial..Durkin was so caught up on Keyed Entry and Bob and John walking home in that race that he didn't even mention ONE WORD about Jazil closing until after the wire he yelled "Jazil"...horrible...How can you miss a horse that closes from 20 lengths out of it?..I was hoping he would win to see how Durkin was going to wiggle out of it..LOL.

Denman understands the horses a lot more than Durkin and it shows in his race calls.....Howvere, I do prefer the class and power in Durkin's stretch calls.

As for the fractions, Denman will say them when he feels that they are relavent....Durkin thinks every first quarter is "blistering"..it's hilarious.

As a horse player, I guess I don't value a race caller telling me the fractions unless they matter...i.e. too fast or too slow...I have trained myself to get the fractions off the monitor because they are available to read a few seconds before Durkin says anything - thus he is being redundant half of the time he is saying the fractions anyway....I would rather an announcer be accurate with his call and be able to see things that are about to happen and communicate them fast - instead of reacting late like guys like Tom Durkin and Terry Wallace do most of the time....just my opinion...

I agree with you 100% - I could care less about the fractions. I pretty much can tell how fast they are going without someone telling me the fractions. Frantion time is pointless to me. I want someone to see something that I don't. Trevor can spot anything going on in the race better than any caller right now. Durkin's call in the Woodward was pretty bad. Not one word of Jazil until the race was over.

The best call I have ever heard was Vic's call last year when they were having an earthquake. If you didnt get to hear the call you are missing out. This call really shows Vic's brilliance as a race caller.

Compare that to that wing sprouting bull**** with an accent no less.

Vic was pretty lame.

chupster2 06-13-2006 10:20 AM

Interestingly, I never see threads entitled "Battaglia" or "Durkin". But I often see Vic tossed up there. Makes me think he isn't all that bad. (I actually like most callers except Battaglia. I like variety.) I agree that Durkin is not as good lately but it seemed to stem back to that really bad cold or whatever it was he had last year. I actually kind of wonder if he is well. Things like that show in a "performance".

eurobounce 06-13-2006 11:32 AM

Who was the race caller that used to impersonate people while calling the race. He would do Rodney Dangerfield, Dave Johnson and didnt he do Larry King too?

pdrift1 06-13-2006 11:47 AM

i think its a track announcer from a louisiana track or was, dont know the name off hand

You're right...that was a legendary call because he obviously did it spontaneously....great call, I will admit....Anyone ever heard any of Frank Mirahmadi's impersonation calls?....Freakin' hilarious!

That is Frak Mirahmadi....by far the most talented race caller IMO...the guy is a genius

i wanna hear the racecall in socal, when the guys were still on the track and just got out of the way of the horses in the nick of time

But I've got to tell you that for me he is not that far above Battaglia and a few others as a caller. It's not that he doesn't call a fairly accurate race, he does. It's just the corny expressions, the mechanical ennunciation and his nasally voice that really grate on me.

"Earlie Fires partners number 5 Brittle Shins next into the gate"
"The milers meet up with the main track"
"Bronco Billy! is being produced down the center of the track"
so and so is "holding favoritism" at two to one.
plus all of the this's and that's.

Like I said he annoys me but seems like a very genuine and nice guy.

Your nuts....He is top three race callers out there. He keeps it personal and I like that. UNDER a STERLING RIDE. I agree that he used the produced line a little too much because the second he says that I look for who he is talking about, and they usually get 3rd.

I think the gender gap shows when talking about this. I like guys like Dooley and Stauffer because I think there calls lend to a younger crowd that is their for excitement. How couldn't you get pumped from Vic's Lava Man call, and I played against him and was still pumped. Wrona I can never understand through my small laptop speakers. The Lone Star guy is TOP NOTCH

I'm not crazy about the dude from Lone Star...

Scav 06-13-2006 12:01 PM

I just emailed this link to Vic, Haber, you should get Dooley on the board.....These track announcers LOVE message boards.

I have eyes for fractions, no need to hear it

One thing I love in a race call is when the announcer will say the jocks name--something like--Bailey is sitting chilly, or Solis has asked for a little more speed from the horse--this allows me to focus on what the jock might be doing.

One thing I hate is when a caller says the horses number. I think it is the guy from Charlestown that does this. He will say and the 1 horse is coming on the outside.

The friggin guy at Indiana Downs does this all....drives me up a wall

For the record, Indiana Downs has some great, GREAT turf races, very profitable too

I saw that too. I think they actually did not say anything about it in the call. I remember TVG only noticed because of a separate camera angle they had ont. It was so bizarre I saved it for a long time.

chupster2 06-13-2006 12:30 PM

Classic calls: Durkin during that fog last year. That was great. I mean, really great. I kept that for a long time too because it just made me laugh!

I can stand almost all of them but Dooley irks me. For me he's in the bottom five.
