I've been out of the loop for eons, but why aren't they considering mchorseracecall?

What's great is he's competing against mostly foreigners. And he's obviously also one of the rubes who believed The Stronach Group had changed.

They should just get it over with and hire a Syrian refugee who doesn't speak English as the announcer. It would probably be the best and most entertaining choice as you listen to the new sound of Southern California racing while trying to decide which trainer has the golden needle.

Would also be nice to hear the Syrian refugee introduce Patrick Valenzuela back to the track. Hey Frank the announcer maybe should pick up a yay habit and become a non-conformist. :D

Mirror man or whatever you call yourself...if that doesn't work maybe move to the EU zone or British territories and pick up a horrible accent.

lol
I agree with all of this.
It worked out for Oaklawn though, they found a guy that sounds a lot like Frank without the bs. He's probably happy to be there as well.

Who do we get at SA this week?

Good stuff

If Santa Anita goes with Michael Wrona, who gets the GG job? Frank? or do they go open mike try outs?

viscount26 02-27-2016 02:34 PM

SA Race caller

Anyone know who's calling the races today

richard burch 02-27-2016 03:41 PM

It's like who is up next at S.A.

David Fitzgerald, 31, a Racing UK presenter and commentator since 2010, including the 2014 and 2015 Royal Ascot meetings, will call the races at Santa Anita over the weekend of Feb. 27-28.

Wrona is getting a raw deal.

But if not M.W. I would like to see peter berry get a shot too since it seems they want "the queens" accent.

viscount26 02-27-2016 04:25 PM

I'm biased, but he's a good race caller

tbevans 02-27-2016 04:47 PM

Listened to some of his Ascot races and the first few races today. Initial impressions are good. Really like him a lot.

If Wrona is getting a raw deal then what is Mirimadi who quit 2 quality gigs getting?

Mirimadi knew he that he is a temporary fill-in going into this. If Wrona gets the SA gig then GG is open and perhaps he can get that.

Why would he want GG over Oaklawn?

Over Oaklawn and Monmouth. It's not like he is Vic calling JV Girls basketball games or anything? He had 2 solid gigs.

No one forced him to quit Oaklawn. No one promised him the full-time SA job. He knew that going into it. He took a risk and for his sake, it hopefully works out for him.

You work for Stronach to speak in such certainties?

I'm flattered to have my name mentioned in conjunction with such a prestigious position but Santa Anita would NEVER entertain a Western New York harness caller being their "voice."

Why Peter? A harness caller can be just as good if not better. I believe Durkin called some harness at the Meadowlands and if anyone could call a race like Jack E. Lee they would win this job in a second.

Isn't he from California?

I actually thought he was nuts to quit both of those for an 'interview'. Especially the Oaklawn meet, you end up revered(?) down there like that other old dude. Frank would have been there for next 30 years.

It might have had to do with their pay rates also. I have no clue how announcers are paid, guessing its a day rate of some kind and they are 1099.

declansharbor 02-28-2016 02:41 PM

Fitzgerald's done one HELL of a job this weekend and hope to see him the mainstay.

I've been listening recently to a lot of Durkin's old harness racing calls, including Cambest's world-record time trial at the Illinois State Fair in 1993. He was a terrific crossover caller, certainly in the class of John Tapp and Bill Collins.

I hope you have listened to some of Jack E. Lee's classic calls. To me he is he Durkin of harness racing calling. John Bothe was a tremendous talent too. Unfortunately, both Lee and Bothe had personal issues that hurt their careers.

I first heard Lee on a visit to Roosevelt in 1975. A brilliant caller, fantastic voice. I had no idea he was the PA announcer at Shea Stadium for a while. Why was he fired from Roosevelt and how well did he adapt to the Long Island quarter horses?

From what I understand he had a big problem with alcohol, there was never an issue about his talent. I believe it cost him the job at Freehold too. I didn't realize that he was the PA announcer at Shea Stadium either and I just saw something that he was the ring announcer at MSG for WWE.

Always loved when he called the horse in last as so and so "can see em all!" He was a great announcer no matter what he called.

I'm basing my opinion on what I hear. You Sir are a damn good race caller so don't underestimate your ability. Great voice, accurate, caring and I can trust your call at the line.

and thanks for the reply. Go Buffalo, I'll be listening.

Hypothetical question

Hypothetical question

since it's common knowledge that they are interviewing callers, If Mr. Berry were to apply for the position, would S.A. have to give him a chance to call a race or 2? They are giving others that chance.

But then again maybe I'm out of touch and we all secretly want to be under a Monarchy and have cheeky accents.

Maybe we like tea.

There were several fine announcers who didn't make the cut to audition. I didn't like my chances against Wrona so I stayed out.

Gotcha!

Oh!...and are you still going to be calling races at Mountaineer?

and who was/is your favorite horse to call at the track?

Yes, I'll still be calling at Mountaineer (and Friday nights at Buffalo). Feodor would have to be my favorite, then Huntress Helena. So, a specialist two-miler and a specialist two-furlonger.

loved the call of Feodor..

"I don't know what turn number this is - I count count that high"

By golly, Feodor must be 20 lengths in front...he might win by a furlong.

Nice pairing.

If you ever make it to the Meadowlands dinner is on me. Have a great day and I'll be watching for Mountaineer.

I'm certainly overdue for a trip there. My only previous visit was in 1977 for Rambling Willie's Hackensack Pace.

Was that when you and Barry Sanders were in law school ? Or was that Ken Berry ?

Side note. Do you guysknow that Thick Vic Stauffer rooted for Blame because it meant more money to him in the pick 4?

Wow!... Now that comes out of the way, way back machine!

Any day is good but the meadowlands pace or Hambo are easily the most exciting days there. Regardless my offer stands. just give me a heads up.
