What made you reconsider your stance as AP and Dortmund being the only ones with a chance for the win?

I get that he is picture perfect in the mornings, but how does a 5f work translate to 10f?

Usain Bolt has a magnificent, effortless stride. He looks great doing it over 100m and 200m, and he's even won recently at 400m. But could he do it over 600m? 800m? Against Rushida?

I think he'll be struggling in the last furlong. I don't think he can stagger home fast enough to win.

Based on watching both of them run.

That being said, I'm not as confident now that AP will be in front of Dortmund in the early running.

If you watched the replay you would notice that he wasn't cantering so great over the wire.

Did he get hurt? I've been out all night immediately after the race ended, so I have no idea what happened to him.

It's as hard to stick with chalk as it is to try and beat it. Sometimes you just have to say I'm betting the favorite, for good if not obvious reasons usually. I did and am very pleased with the results.

And a great grandson, I believe, of the great Storm Cat . . . even better in my book.

So rubbing it in that he ran poorly (and way below expectations) was just to make yourself feel better? Well done.

I knew they'd had a naming contest, and wondered if that contributed to the error.
you never know tho. I have my last name spelled incorrectly constantly....just gave out two scholarships, and the home office had my name spelled wrong on them! hello, been with you guys four years now.
when youngest was born, I submitted his ss paperwork. his card came in misspelled. I called, they asked if I was sure that it was wrong. er, I'm sure-I know how to spell my name! all they had to do was copy what I wrote....

Husband was watching me with me pointed out down the stretch that the jock was whacking away on Pharoah and the jock on Firing Line wasn't smacking his horse near as much. Kind of hard to explain it really.

I'll explain it for you. Some horses need more urging than others to keep to the task at hand. Let's start a new thread about the "whacking" so those who realize it's part of the game and it doesn't hurt the horses don't have to filter through this crap again.

However, my primary reasons for not betting are two. First, I get too wrapped up in it and get nothing else done in life.

Second, I lost too many races by jockey ineptitude and shady training practices.

I internalize that stuff too much.

No need to get snarky. I'm fine with the whip and understand why it's there. What you said - that's more or less what I told him - just that the horse was probably wasn't used to a horse coming up on him and needed extra urging. You can call it what you want, but to someone who is just watching a sport that is very new for them, it's whacking, regardless of if it hurts the animal or not. Visually, it's not something a neophyte likes to see or understands. It IS hard to explain this part (crop/whip) part of the sport when there is a stark contrast in the urging of the two final competitors coming to the wire.

So American Pharoah, who we were told has three or four gears, and can run as fast as need be to win ( essentially ) any race, needed 32 stings of the whip to run ( effectively ) the same race he ran in Arkansas?

American Pharoah got a dream trip to win the Derby by three quarters of a length over a horse that didn't change leads in the stretch. The pre-race BS about this horse was completely exposed.
