Just shoveled about 7 inches in -28 wind chill and to tell you the truth I think I'm adapting to this Global Warming by cooling.

Breathing was hard but the cold was nuttin. Hard to believe 500 years ago this place was swarming with Indians all surviving by fire in the winters.

Pesky research that indicates, in fact, that a shift in the polar cap due to global warming will create arctic weather patterns not normally seen in the southern reaches of the subarctic Northern Hemisphere.

But let's just continue to dismiss science. Cain't be Cold if it's warmin', therefore it ain't warmin'! That's just you hippies pushin' yur BS on us! Even Rush has it figgrd out!

Or that the globe has gone through five previous ice ages, the last, 10,000 years ago.

Despite the fact I come from a monkey it would seem that ALL of those previous ice ages were ended with a period of global warming.

Mother Nature is far more able than she's given credit for and the human race as a whole is far too vain and self-important to ever realize it.

Rudeboyelvis 01-21-2014 10:55 AM

Steve, I don't know why the climate is changing due to global warming, it's just a fact that it is.

If you want to believe it's just mother nature hitting the delete button every 10,000 years, that's your right.

If you want to refuse to believe indisputable science showing that elevated greenhouse gases over the past 60 years have markedly impacted the temperature of the atmosphere, and that we can actually at least try to do something about it then hey, go for it.

Just don't deny that it's occurring. That's plain silly.

What does becomes tiresome is the dropping IQ levels of the people that dismiss that, and thus regurgitate Rush Limbaugh and bombard message boards with snide, asinine global warming jokes (because it's cold, don't ya see? hur hur hur)....it seems commensurate with the rise in sea levels.

randallscott35 01-21-2014 10:56 AM

I'm praying for warming. Too many islands to begin with.

D.C. federal government offices closed two "business" days in a row.

Exactly, now 10 inches of snow is a major news event requiring 24x7 coverage.

Just went and confirmed this is a colder than normal winter in Southern WI. December high/low averages are 33/19; this year 29/11.6. January so far with an average of 28/13 is coming in at 20.7/6.1.

I was curious whether Anchorage is experiencing a warmer than normal winter ;) and found that with a December average of 25/14 they came in at 19.5/9.7.

Oh and if you want to figure your hometown average here's a source I used...

I don't mind the cold. I don't want to pay the heating bills....and little kids don't do well outside in it. That is all

Danzig 01-24-2014 08:33 PM

i saw today that the fountain across the street in the park was frozen again. not nearly as thick as last time, but two tiers were solid.

Got 100 gallons of oil last week of November for $3.55/gallon. Lasted a whopping 32 days. Got another 150 gallons at the start of this month an they were ever so kind to give it to me for $3.48/gallon:rolleyes:

Curious, what temp is the house set at?

Danzig 01-27-2014 06:10 AM

and how much insulation in your attic?

I try and keep it around 69. If it was just me in the house, I'd leave it at 65.

It needs redone. There are some other places around the house where cold air is getting in. Single pane windows aren't helping the situation much. I can stand 5 feet away and feel cold air. I have a sunroom that needs the insulation replaced underneath it. I have a 1, 200 sq ft unfinished basement that has a fireplace. Im thinking of getting a woodstove to put in there as my main source of heat.

Try putting the plastic cellophane on the windows.

Where do you live now? Can you change to nat gas?

I have a great old house, but I went ahead and got foam insulation and it made a big difference.

That's next on the list. 7 + years in Roanoke and we would have to experience the coldest winter in over 20 years the year I decide to buy a house.:wf

at least I still have the awesome view ;)

i'm getting ready to tear out my fireplace.
the work involved with using wood is unreal. i'd recommend a pellet stove, or better yet, put in a gas insert.
instead of the cellophane, storm windows might help. also, putting in new windows would help immensely, and they might still be eligible for a tax credit. and i'd take a credit over a deduction any day, because it's money off the bottom line.
definitely add insulation in the attic, and i wouldn't be surprised if you had less than you need in the walls-or even in the gaps between studs and windows. caution if you decide to get the foam in the can that expands-it can overfill, and make it difficult or impossible to open your windows.
happy home ownership!
