Bobby Ewing...

Excerpt
(Written by David Pipe)

Unfortunately it has been a quiet week on the racing front and there seemed to be more poignant news than usual, notably the sad passing of legendary Grand National winning trainer Josh Gifford as well as our own inmate, Bobby Ewing.

We had sad news of our own on Saturday morning when promising hurdler Bobby Ewing collapsed and died on the gallops at Pond House. He had shown top class form when slamming Menorah by ten lengths at Doncaster in 2009 and we subsequently bought him from the sales in 2010 with a leg injury. His owners had shown great patience to give him the time necessary to make a full recovery and we had been very pleased with him as he continued his progress back towards his racecourse reappearance. The world really was his oyster and sadly we will never get to see just how good he could have been.

In his 11 lifetime starts he had been pulled up 5 times and fallen once.
He had never hit the board.

Noverre-14

Champion Noverre, Half Brother to Arazi, Dies
By Blood-Horse Staff
Updated: Thursday, March 8, 2012 2:14 PM
Posted: Thursday, March 8, 2012 2:14 PM

Noverre, an English champion who ran in two Breeders’ Cup events, died in India, where he was standing at stud, according to the Racing Post. A half brother to international champion Arazi, Noverre was 14.

By Rahy, Noverre was bred in Kentucky by Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley Stud Management. Campaigned by Godolphin, Noverre was England’s champion 3-year-old male miler in 2001. He won that year’s Champagne Lanson Sussex Stakes (Eng-I) and ran second in two English group I events. He finished first in that year’s Dubai Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Fr-I, the French Two Thousands Guineas), but was disqualified two months later after testing positive for a prohibitive substance and placed last.

Noverre contested his first Breeders’ Cup race in the 2000 Juvenile (gr. I) at Churchill Downs. Attempting to emulate Arazi, who won the 1991 running at Churchill in dramatic fashion, Noverre finished 11th to Macho Uno .

Noverre was back in the Breeders’ Cup the following year. The 4-1 favorite in the Mile (gr. IT) at Belmont Park, he ended up seventh behind Val Royal.

Noverre, who also raced in Canada, Dubai, and Hong Kong, was retired after his 4-year-old season with a record of 5-7-4 from 21 starts and earnings of $1,429,344.

Noverre stood at Sheikh Mohammed’s Kildangan Stud in Ireland and at the sheikh’s Darley Australia before his stint in India. He has sired more than 20 stakes winners including 2010 English champion 3-year-old filly miler Music Show. His other top runners include Le Havre, who won the 2009 Prix du Jockey Club (Fr-I, the French Derby), and Enora, who captured the 2010 Preis der Diana-Deutsches Stuten-Derby(Ger-I, German Oaks).

According to the Post, Noverre is the sire of Hachiko, a two-time stakes winner in India this year.

Noverre is out of the Northern Dancer mare Danseur Fabuleux. His fourth is blue hen Dinner Partner.

Champion Borgia Dies
By Blood-Horse Staff

Posted: Thursday, March 29, 2012 1:05 PM

Borgia, a globetrotting German-bred champion filly who specialized in long distance racing, died March 29.

The daughter of Acatenango out of the Tarim mare Britannia was 18.

A homebred for Gestut Ammerland, Borgia not only raced in Germany but in England, France, Japan, North America, Dubai, and Hong Kong and often against males. She was a champion in Germany, England, and France.

Borgia enjoyed her best season at 3 in 1997. She won the BMW 128 Deutsches Derby (Ger-I) and the Mercedes-Benz-125 Grosser Preis von Baden (Ger-I), and ran second in the Preis der Diana-Deutsches Stuten-Derby (German Oaks, Ger-II). Also that year she ran second in the Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IT) and third in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Fr-I).

As a 5-year-old, Borgia captured the Hong Kong Vase (HK-I) and contested the inaugural running of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT), finishing fifth. She was retired after the Hong Kong Vase with a record of 6-7-2 from 22 starts and earnings of $1,697,771.

Borgia produced nine foals including four winners. Her last reported offspring is an unnamed 2-year-old colt by Oasis Dream.

Grant Vent ended up being put down as well.

I wanted to start a thread in the paddock asking something... like where is the outrage? To have run the race again...

Disgusted.

If no one wants to talk about it though and that seems pretty clear why bother.

Major Stallion Grand Slam Dies
By Blood-Horse Staff

Posted: Sunday, April 1, 2012 1:51 PM

Grand Slam , who is represented by four 3-year-old stakes winners in 2012, died March 31 at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky., as a result of heart failure.

Commenting on his sudden death, Ashford manager Dermot Ryan said, “Grand Slam was a pleasure to have here, and he was very popular with breeders as he sired nearly 800 winners and has progeny earnings of over $64 million. It’s a sad day for the staff here who worked with him and for all the partners who were involved with the horse and who have always been fantastic to deal with.”

Grand Slam, who was produced from the stakes-winning El Gran Senor mare Bright Candles, is represented by 73 stakes winners including Breeders’ Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner Cajun Beat, Saratoga grade I winner Visionaire, Japanese group I winner Café Olympus, and this year’s Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) contender Millionreasonswhy.

Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, the 17-year-old son of Gone West raced for Robert and Christina Baker, William Mack, and David Cornstein. As a juvenile he won the Futurity Stakes (gr. I) and the Champagne Stakes (gr. I). At 3, he won the Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) and placed in five graded stakes including the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

ShopBarn Fire in Florida Kills Nine Horses
By Blood-Horse Staff
Updated: Sunday, April 1, 2012 7:07 PM

Nine horses died April 1 in a barn fire at McKathan Farm and Training Center near Reddick, Fla., according to a story on the Ocala Star-Banner newspaper’s website (www.ocala.com). Luke and Jocelyn McKathan own the 62-acre operation.

The cause of the fire isn’t known, Jessica Greene, a spokeswoman for Marion County Fire Rescue told the publication. Firefighters received a telephone call reporting the blaze at 10:31 a.m. (EDT) and arrived at the farm at 10:40 a.m. The Star-Banner reported that 75% of the barn was engulfed in flames by then. The fire was under control by 11:08 a.m.

Based on other information in the story, the horses belonged to the McKathans and not to any of their clients. A neighbor was able to free three horses in the burning barn, but they were injured. One farm worker was injured slightly, suffering first-degree burns, according to Greene.

why shouldn't they have run the race again? obviously any race has inherent danger-does the risk rise because a horse broke down? were there other races on that surface after that race?
