Actually, it's a wive's tale, but some people believe it. The color of a horse's hooves hasn't been shown to have anything to do with soundness. It's the structure of the hoof that causes problems.

Actually I think everything is going fairly 'cheap' for the select portion of the sale and there are a lot of RNA's.

Round Pen 09-11-2006 04:32 PM

Man First Year I have missed the sale in quite some time

Darn Wisdom Teeth

sumitas 09-11-2006 04:39 PM

haha, you have saved some money then

and Secretariat had 3 socks

Sightseek 09-11-2006 04:50 PM

The half to High Cotton by Giant's Causeway went for 1.9M.

Seeking the Gold does not sire sound horses a lot of the time. They win, but don't last long, in general.

The Flitabout clan is notorious for unsoundness... but if you took the ill-fated Ruffian out of it, do you think it would be talked about even half as much? Just curious... im not sure it would.

Betsy 09-11-2006 06:00 PM

Balletto, would you classify Empire Maker and Mineshaft as disappointments? Mineshaft did eh, especially w/o the $950,00.00 and I thought EM's would sell for much higher......thoughts?

sumitas 09-11-2006 06:07 PM

That clan came to Ruffian by way of Reviewer, who had soundness problems himself. That clan is the family of Seeking The Gold and many G1 winners. It has a poor reputation for soundness for a reason, I'm afraid.

He was a very nice individual, but man he has a strange and obscure cross. Personally, I think Mr. Greeley's are a bit over-inflated in their auction value in the market, but he was a nice horse....not sure of his identity though...he is out of a Pivatol mare and has a Euro turf pedigree on the bottomside but he is my maintrack influence Mr. Greeley and looks like a dirt horse....weird cross for that kind of cash...

Cunningham Racing 09-11-2006 06:41 PM

The Storm Cat session topper out of Awesome Humor was gorgeous, which goes without saying, but I thought he was better than the Tranquility Lake baby last year.....I wasn't a great fan of Awesome Humor but remember her vividly when Ronnie Werner had her ..she was actually a smaller more refined tyoe of filly and was actually a very cheap auction purchase when Mr. Durant bought her...

I was impressed with her baby.....very nice..

Cunningham Racing 09-11-2006 07:25 PM

Best I saw go through the ring monday (individuals - Not pedigree sensative):

1) Vindication - Serena's Tune colt --- Gorgeous physical speciment and you could see shades of both Serena's Song and Seattle Slew in him....all class..

2) Storm Cat - Awesome Humor colt--- I wanted to not like him but couldn't....as nice of a Storm Cat as you'll ever see and a deserving sales topper....

3) Unbridled's Song - Wild Heart colt --- Looked like his daddy and how all of the good Unbridled's Songs look...maybe better looking than all of them that I've seen....with more family on the damside he brings a couple more million...

4) Tale of the Cat - Driana colt --- Unproven dam is what cost him being in the seven figures, but he was as good of a Tale of the Cat as you'll ever see....extreme athleticism....he was a bay version of Lion Heart....

5) Mr. Greeley - Silvester Lady colt --- needs no explanation as to his looks and prescense in the sales ring, just look at his price...he was very flashy and athletic, obviously, but he had something else about him that drew you in...didn't look or act like a yearing out there...

6) Sky Mesa - Alida colt --- Best Sky Mesa I've seen and he was a very nice individual....might have been a solid sleeper for his price similar to the Tale of the Cat due to the fact that his page was relatively unproven...

7) Distorted Humor - Teaksberry Road colt --- He was the best Distorted Humor I saw all day, yet others sold for more because they were a bit stronger pedigree-wise on the dam side...Very, very good individual and obviously his owners felt the same way to buy him back....thought he would definately bring seven figures when I saw him enter the ring....watch for him down the road at another sale...

8) Unbridled's Song - Win Crafty Lady filly --- I know Harmony Lodge well and she is a better individual than her Grade 1, millionaire sister....best filly in the session IMO...yes, better than the Take Charge Lady filly and A.P. Warrior's half-sister IMO...

*Note:

I'm not the greatest sales prospect evaluator on earth and these are just opinions on the ones I liked...If this interests you, I would suggest writing down the dam's names and researching these babies' names early next year before they are about to start their racing careers...Obviously, they are all '05 models and can be researched to keep up with if you have the right resources....I really enjoy doing this after the Keeneland Sept. sale every year and I find it fun and intriguing to see how right I am as far as their ability when and if they ever race....Plus, it may give you something to wager on when each of these horses debuts, especially the ones I thought were sleepers!

I'll tell you this, I've actually had relativey good success since doing this for fun....For example, last year I thought Scat Daddy, who Pletcher bought two rows in front of me with some lady at the end of day 1 last year, was one of the top 5 individuals in the first session of the sale, and he turned out to be one of the top juvenile runners this year as only a $250,000 purchase underneath 40+ seven-figure lots to go through the ring last year.....Take it for what its worth...obviously, I've picked out some horses that never made it to the track too, just like everybody else... :)

Was't anything special at all, DaHoss....didn't see her legs, but she was not the class and body you'd expect with that reputation...if she went that cheap though, she probably also had some physical issues because she should be worth $300,000 as a broodmare prospect....

They look pretty good...he got a good book of mares his first year...the colt I mention in the rundown was the best one I've seen....the farm my mares are on in Paris, Ky. has a few nice Sky Mesas on it.....he'll be alright.....

sumitas 09-11-2006 08:24 PM

Interresting to see what some bought. Lael bought hip 17, Empire Maker/Lucky Soph filly. It is basically the Fappaino.Caro cross of Unbridled's Song fame. Very nicely bred girl. $375k. 143, Deputy Minister/Antics colt $200k, a little heavy on the Native Dancer and Raise A Native.

Becky Thomas 109 Distorted Humor/Sweet Serendipity(1/2 to Anees) colt, $225k. The pedigree is a carbon copy of a lot of Raise A Native/Northern Dancer/Native Dancer crosses out there. But it can be successful on the track for a short time.

I did the same thing last year, thus far of "my" 5 starters I had several first time out winners (and got to cash on them too! :D )

Moccasin Gap f. Giant's Causeway - Lemon Dove - won at first asking at Woodbine

Divide and Conquer c. Mr. Greeley - Diversion - won at first asking at Hollywood

Most Distinguished c. Dixie Union - Stylish Storm - 2nd to Pegasus Wind when he broke his maiden at Saratoga, had a real dog fight in his second start, getting 2nd

Kauai Calls f. Fupeg - Collect Call - broke maiden at first asking at Saratoga also took an allowance later in the meet

thirtysixth f. Dixieland Band - Steal a Heart - 3rd in first start, bought by Zayat

*******
I am eagerly awaiting:
Indy's Windy f. A.P. Indy - Banshee Winds - sold for 1.9M, training in CA...I would have given my right arm to own this filly!

Shining Armor c. Mr. Greeley - Shining Through (dam of the talented and ill-fated Venetian Sunset & Strong Hope)

As for me, I really like Mr. Greeley as a sire. I think his biggest problem IS his auction prices...he's not very commercial but he will get you a runner. If I were buying for myself I'd find me the best Mr. Greeley or Dixie Union I could afford. Well priced runners.

Simon Says

pgardn 09-11-2006 08:47 PM

Simon says this is like a bad junk bond sales.

Unbelievable that folks buy horses for this kind of money that have not stepped on a track.

But let the market ride. Good ole America. Ill never get it.

If you thought Bernardini was impressive winning the Jim Dandy and Travers this summer, exercise rider Simon Harris believes you ain't seen nothin' yet.

Harris only gets on Bernardini when he has timed workouts. On Sunday, Harris guided Bernardini through a five-furlong breeze in 1:01.68 over Belmont Park's main track. It was Bernardini's first breeze since he won the Travers by 7 1/2 lengths on Aug. 26.

"I don't want to jinx him, but he feels like he's getting better and better," Harris said Sunday. "Straight up, he does. He feels stronger to me. I don't think we've seen the best of this horse yet."

Bernardini will likely breeze every six days as he leads up to his showdown with multiple Grade 1 winner Invasor in the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup here on Oct. 7.

Thanks, Da Hoss, I hadn't read that. Tom said that Bernardini's recent work was just as good, if not better, than any of his others (or something like that), so this colt (scary as it seems) is getting better. Oct. 7th can't come soon enough for me.

I've seen the full to Indy Storm...she is nice, but he was a nice looking horse - just a big ole plodder when the smoke cleared....I think she'll be mich better than him obviously....

Tom very seldom shells out the Big money. Usually goes for several less than 100k with a few flaws trying to find a runner. Tjink he has backed of the realy nice ones since Werner left. He is trying to upgrade the State breds here in Texas. What did he do with Touch Tone? he was probably his best one. Took him to NY and ran 2nd on the Belmont undercard 3-4 years ago.

263 - c. Dynaformer - Mambo Jambo (sister to Divine Proportions)

359 - c. Storm Cat - Victory Ride (Magical Ride is looking fairly brilliant)

363 - f. Storm Cat - Welcome Surprise

430 - c. Mineshaft - Dear Birdie

434 - c. Giant's Causeway - Dissemble (dam of Leroidanimaux)

Man, you guys act like $295k is a pittance for a horse. I guarantee you at some point she'll be more valuable than that if only as a broodmare.
