Worst Derby ever?

Never made the lead. Sway Away blew past him on the turn and appeared to be in control but faded to fourth in deep stretch.

Almost exactly. I think he got bored in the gate, plus JPs Gusto's jock gunned the lead and The Factor just trudged around like a sulking teenager. I think everyone but Bob Baffert was tricked by this pony. No lead = no run.

Archarcharch looked amazing in the post parade and seems a tall, lanky horse - reminds me of a european horse or maybe something from oz.

stalked wide, attempted to move 3 wide around the crows on the turn, had nothing

somerfrost 04-16-2011 06:45 PM

Top two looked pretty good, I do like Archarcharch a bit but he was all out to win.

Exactly. All the sharp horses coming into the race are all stretch runners. I guess i have to give Mo a mulligan. I hope he shows some spark in his training over at CD. Tough to get a read on Pletcher though, he just never lets his horses do much in the am.

Luckily he'll only call about a mile's worth.

The Factor can't rate. Period.

Although he got a nice pace setup (and the Derby will probably have a similar pace), I liked how well Nehro was closing at the end for the second race in a row. He should relish the extra furlong. The time of 1:49:34 was not bad and is about the same as what Line of David ran last year (beating Super Saver by a neck). Nehro did run once as a 2-year old.

Merlinsky 04-16-2011 07:03 PM

Congratulations to Jon Court. :) A sentimental favorite, whatever the final odds of Archarcharch.

He's easily as good a horse as Dialed In and should be a larger price.

LARHAGE 04-16-2011 07:05 PM

I think Sway Away could have made a better showing if he didn't go all in at the 3/8 pole, way premature move. I couldn't believe how bad that race call was I thought the sound went out on my TV, he's brutal.

Seattleallstar 04-16-2011 07:07 PM

I dont know about TVG people, but their stream was non existent to horrible during the race. This is why these races should be shown on TV, probably a million people using the same feed for the race, created alot of latency in connection.

mbahadur 04-16-2011 07:17 PM

Will J P's Gusto still move on to the Derby (he has enough earnings) and keep the blinkers while employing the same pace tactics he employed today?

He was 33 to 1 today and should be a higher price in the Derby (even with all the stupid money that gets bet on the Derby).

Time for everyone to get off the Elite Alex bandwagon.

Calvin Borel will now need a mount for the Derby.

mbahadur 04-16-2011 07:23 PM

Per DRF, Baffert said immediately following the race that it appeared The Factor displaced his palate.

Would like to see him move on to the Derby as he will take some money.

And he really knocked it out of the park. As they turn for home, he says of the tiring pacesetter: "Toby the Coal Man is still trying to hang on there in third."

Just saying....

I have to use the mute most of the races at Oaklawn.

Twin Spires sucked all day as well.

Well, how long does a horse like this need to get over a displaced palate? Does it require surgery? Can he still make the Derby?

The Indomitable DrugS 04-16-2011 10:12 PM

It's a classic excuse from the alibi breakfest. Right up there with "the track was too cuppy"

JP's Gusto's best game is going 5.5 to 7 furlongs - his dam was a turf sprinter - I'm sure they'll remove the blinkers and a cutback to synthetic sprints will be his goal.

pick4 04-17-2011 12:02 AM

Archarcharch won 2/3's of Oaklawn's Derby preps and was 3rd in the Rebel after getting beat up in the gate prior to the Rebel. He broke his maiden in a non graded Stakes race going 6F. He has natural speed and he can close plus he has a nose for the wire.

On May 7th if Archarcharch is 10-1 and Dialed In is 3-1 who do wager on?

hockey2315 04-17-2011 12:15 AM

Nehro (even though he'll be a total wise guy horse).

Nehro can finish strong. He's a legit horse. He's improving with every race and I think that's what you want to see with a horse entering the Derby.

I think Archarcharch and Nehro are stronger finshers than Dialed In who will probably be the Derby favorite.

Wasnt that what led to MF's downfall eventually?

Indian Charlie 04-17-2011 01:20 AM

LOL.

I think this is my first time buzzed reading DT at night.

I kinda see why Team Komodo does this sort of thing.
