Matriarch Trivia

1) Argentinian Auspiciante, the '86 winner of the Matriarch, was the dam of what dirt/turf Grade 1 winner who produced Florida Derby winner Friends Lake?

2) This Robert Sangster-owned mare, trained by John Gosden, won the '84 Matriarch. She also won the inaugural BC Mile at Hollywood Park that year. Name her.

3) This Jack Van Berg-trained mare ran third in the '90 Matriarch. The following year she humiliated two-time distaff champion Bayakoa twice in the Santa Maria and Santa Margarita Handicaps. Name her.

4) This half-sister to Saint Ballado was 2nd in the inaugural Matriarch in '81. Name her.

5) Grade-1 winners and producers Toussaud ('93), Kostroma ('92), and Fire The Groom ('91) placed behind this great turf mare in consecutive runnings of the Matriarch. Name her.

I was pissed when he didn't run in the Preakness, though I was happy AP Valentine put in a good effort after getting an absolutely horrendous trip (worse than Dollar Bill IMO) in the Kentucky Derby.

Dollar Bill got another Day special in the Preakness.

Burning Roma was a neat horse. He was pretty good on the turf as well. I feel like he had a nice win on the Tampa grass.

RolloTomasi 11-21-2010 09:23 PM

3) was Little Brianne. Bayakoa ran once more, nowhere in the Apple Blossom and was mercifully retired.

Fall Highweight Trivia

1) This half-brother to Grade 1 winner and producer Shared Interest won the '89 Fall Highweight beating BC Sprint winner Dancing Spree. Name him.

2) Ta Wee, Gold Beauty, What A Summer, Funistrada, Classy Mirage, Chou Croute, Honorable Miss.

Which one did not win the Fall Highweight?

3) This former 2yo champion and leading contender in the Kentucky Derby the following year won the '93 Fall Highweight. Name him.

4) Fall Highweight winners Salt Lake ('92) and Yonaguska ('01) both won what important 2yo race the year before?

5) Fall Highweight winners Salt Lake ('92) and Chimes Band ('94) also won what important 3yo sprint race, named for the '73 Fall Highweight winner, the same year?

That's right, but she did run 2nd in '95.

Almost made that a part 2 to the question. Both What A Summer and Ta Wee won consecutive runnings.

blackthroatedwind 11-21-2010 09:32 PM

I feel like when Honorable Miss won it she beat No Bias....who had won the day before.

In fact, when they printed the old program ( the night before ), they omitted No Bias, assuming he would scratch. When he didn't, they made him part of the field.

No Bias was 2nd, so you're probably right.

Didn't St. Ballado run in the Ky Derby?

Good call. For some reason, 1976 was omitted from the list I read.

No. I remember him being touted early because of his pedigree and only later made any good on the promise with his big Arlington Classic score (might have been a track record).

Of course, he didn't last much longer afterward.
