Hard Spun went :46 1/5 and 1:11 at Churchill in the Ky Derby and still ran 2nd. Big Brown was 3 lengths off a :47 and 1:11 pace and he was 3-4 wide and still won the Derby easily. Funny Cide was sitting 2 lengths off a :46 1/5 and 1:10 2/5 pace in the Derby and he won. The track was probably a little faster on those days than it was in the Classic.

There was an incredible bias toward speed in tiznow's classic. No way captain Steve would get by him either way but especially not on that track that day.

In 98 the track was much more fair and slower.

Look at the surrounding races in Captain Steve's form ... and you'll see the Classic wasn't a good race for him speed figure wise.

Certainly, he ran a super race in the Classic that year .. but the pace did hinder him enough.

Captain Steve was a pretty underrated horse. He was a VERY good 2-year-old ... for whatever reason the first half of his 3yo season was weak ... but he really turned the corner in the second half of his 3yo season season through his easy Dubai World Cup win.

He could have easily given Tiznow all he wanted in a fairly run race.

I am somewhat jaded because i backed him the race before in the goodwood. Watching that race, there was little doubt as to who was better at the time in my opinion. No doubt, captain Steve was nice though he looks like he was born in the wrong year.

I don't think the Goodwood proved Tiznow was the better of the two horses at all.

Tiznow was a "lone F" loose on the lead front-runner in there - and Captain Steve had to act as his own rabbit to try to apply some mid-race pressure on Tiznow.

That race, was actually the highest Beyer Tiznow ever ran in his career. He got a 119 in there. He got a 116 when he won the BC Classic at 9/1 over Giant's Causeway next time out. A 117 when he won the Santa Anita Handicap by 5 lengths at age 4. And a 117 when he repeated in the BC Classic at Belmont the following year. Captain Steve really stretched him every yard of the way in there.

It was a generalization.

The idea that the Fat Lunatic doesn't understand why people bet against dramatic underlays makes me question how much he actually knows about betting horses. As I said before the race, Blame was the most likely winner. Given the insanely low odds on Zenyatta, you had to bet against her in all pools. That doesn't mean you don't protect with her in supers, in under slots, but even in that case you are betting against her.

This may not be Horseplaying 101, but it's not so advanced that someone who claims to be as sharp as the Fat Lunatic should understand it implicitly.

Zenyatta-mania created the juiciest overlay (Blame) I've seen in a long time in a race of this magnitude.

Espinoza worked about as hard as a jock possibly could in that race. He had to be one worn out pinhead after that one.

After further review, you'd better look at monipenny closing into Smoothie's fast pace. Yesterday alone was a solid performance, but monipenny's body of work doesn't stand up to Smoothie picking his spots while compiling a fine catalog of posts by staying in his own backyard and posting mostly in threads restricted to one topic.

My take is that 47 on any fast track plays to closers . It is not a guarantee a closer will win but it brings them right into the game . Just my two cents .
