Hopefully your getting a raise and will be making the money you deserve for having far and away the best horse racing show on radio or television. The fact that you continuously fill 15 hours of air time each and every week makes your efforts extraordinary.

The day will come when you will have options in the industry that few others have. If Andy can become the best known handicapper working for the most influential racing circuit in the country, there is no reason why you cannot achieve a following of similar significance within a reasonable amount of time and growth. Good things continue to occur, they are just different not necessarily bad. Congrats are actually in order and are extended sincerely.

GoIrish 06-08-2010 02:55 PM

Well, add me to the list of unhappy people. Can't stream at work. Ruins my drive home. There goes my last reason for paying for Sirius. I will let my subscription expire. Sorry Steve, this has to hurt, but the main reason I keep renewing my contract is your show. Without it, I'm gone. Hopefully we can still listen to the archives on your website. Won't help me in the car though.

I will do my best to listen whenever the show is on....the show has changed the way i bet after 30 years and actually made me a much better handicapper. Good luck in the new spot...you can always play live races from England....

Hickory Hill Hoff 06-08-2010 03:45 PM

Still streaming from 4 to 7 on the internet???

Steve,

Will the show be replayed in afternoon streaming (like it's now done after 7pm) and more importantly will it have the same time slot on the internet (from 4 to 7) each day. Although I have Sirus in my wife's car, most of the time I listen to the show on the streaming internet feed. Everything will work out for the best I'm sure :)

booner 06-08-2010 04:22 PM

Most of the posts echo my feelings. I really liked listening in the afternoons on the way home from work.

My Sirius subscription may be cancelled in the near future........

joeydb 06-08-2010 06:28 PM

Sent to sirius customer care, moments ago...

"I'm really upset that "At the Races with Steve Byk" is being moved to mornings. He's one of the only reasons I have an account with your service. Now we no longer will get live racing in the afternoons with him, and this is after we have been forced to tolerate the STUPID "Busted Open" and Fight club nonsense. Our sport deserves better. Just a couple of months ago, I was praising sirius for taking care of us by providing Steve's show and TVG broadcasts all day. Now it seems like you guys want to squeeze us out. Check out DerbyTrail.com and see how many people are screaming about cancelling their accounts. This is not a good move at all -- not for us, the horse racing fans, and certainly not for you."

rpncaine 06-08-2010 08:14 PM

Ditto. I was set to finally get a unit and subscription for Fathers Day. I was all excited to finally be able to hit my car at 4:00 and listen to the show live. There is no reason for me to get it now. I can't listen live at work from 9-12 (to many work type things) and aside from NPR don't listen to any other radio.
I want to echo some of the comments people have made about the show. I started listening about 2 1/2 years ago and can't belive how much I have learned by doing so. I'm still not that good of a handicapper, but I shutter to think how bad I would be if not for the show and Steve's and the guests insights. I'll keep listening via the archives and will certainly follow Steve wherever he ends up (TV someday?), but I hope the show lives on for as long as Steve wants it too.

With my commute I was able to listen to Steve a few times a week and really missed the days I couldn't. Now listening to replays of folks talking about races that ran the day before will suc... Can't see how the AM slot will work for me. Will try to make the best of it and see how it works out.
Not happy

Monarchos1 06-08-2010 10:21 PM

I saw a post on another board that sirius doesn't pay for the atr programming anyway, so the company is just doing what is best for itself financially and screwing horseplayers. Reminds me of churchill downs and magna.

dagolfer33 06-08-2010 10:51 PM

I thought about it, and I dont listen to anything in my car other than ATR! This is going to piss me off, especially since I just bought the nice car model.

good comparison, this really blows. A big carryover on a work day without ATR just isn't the same. Best of luck Steve.

Last night on my way home from work I called XM's toll free number from my cell. After identifying myself as a subscriber with my phone number and zip code, I was on hold for 20-25 minutes. When I finally spoke to a human, I told her (politely) that I was calling to inquire about At The Races on XM 243, to see if it was going to change times, and that if it was I was likely to cancel my three unit subscriptions. She asked me to hold on for an "XM Customer Care Representative." I held for 15 more minutes until I arrived at my polling place (primaries yesterday), where cell phones aren't permitted, so I hung up. They still have not responded to my email. I don't know why I should be surprised. They have never been responsive before, so why start now.

Kasept 06-09-2010 09:10 AM

I greatly appreciate everyone's thoughts regarding the move and the incredibly generous support. At the heart of Sirius' request is ATR's availability for free on the net. They have annually asked in contract discussions that the show not stream live, and we have politely declined to end the stream knowing that a great number of listeners enjoy the show that way.

Sirius has been very supportive of ATR for a long time, and I understand their need to promote exclusive content in their most marketable slots. They have created some new programming, and want to get it on during 4-7p and seem to have little room for all of us. There are details to work out yet, but I'm trying to find ways to deliver the show to listeners when and how they want it. Thanks to everyone for their heartening eagerness to have 'At the Races' as part of their lives.

Steve

OldDog 06-09-2010 10:34 AM

Thank YOU, Steve. I hope it works out well, in whatever form, for you and the show (and of course for us, too).

Nascar1966 06-09-2010 10:38 AM

When it comes to this great sport Sirius/XM could care less about us consumers. Looks like I will be saving a few dollars if that is going to be the schedule. Fridays nights Sirius has a stupid boxing show on that lasts for two hours.

Wow. I thought Sirius was bad at consumer relations. My heart goes out to you.

wally09 06-09-2010 07:02 PM

Many months ago, I told the story of receiving a Sirius subscription as a Christmas gift from my kids and my initial thought was "what the heck am I going to do with this?". But my son immediately told me of a racing channel, and I soon received my introduction to ATR and Steve Byk. Within a matter of weeks I heard about the DT 04 offer, and not only was I hooked as a listner, but I immediately became a partner, too. I met Steve at Saratoga and my sons and I made it to Aqueduct this winter/spring for a couple of Lloyd's races. This all came about because of my Sirius gift subscription. But I rarely have listened to anything but channel 126 since I received the gift . And I really have no desire to listen to anything but ATR. Count me in as another of the disenchanted. I, too will remain loyal to Steve, but my Sirius subscription will end the day Steve is no longer on Sirius!

Steve

If the new programming you write of is the wrestling and fighting shows currently on from 2-4, that's a joke. Who do they possibly think listens to that stuff?
Steve, the fact of the matter is, if Howard Stern does not re-sign, Sirius/XM will cease to exist shortly thereafter anyway. Better to find an alternative way to continue the show.

pmacdaddy 06-09-2010 07:43 PM

The internet availability is tough. I purchased an Sirius internet radio for my wife recently (and to get ATR at home). This requires additional iternet subscription. I was disapointed that 126 is not available on the Sirius internet.

Even as a Sirius subscriber, I sometimes use your site to catch portions of your show. Tough to limit your availability to stream, when not otherwise available on the net. Would think your streaming would create more Sirius/XM subscribers as opposed to be somehow competing...

Best of luck. Hoping to have show back on my car radio soon.

arizonadave 06-09-2010 07:57 PM

Even though i know it will not last, today i heard all the races from Hollywood and the last 4-5 from Belmont. For the gambler, this is great. It would be paradise to have Steve in the morning from 6-9 and live calls from 1pm on. Im sure it will change though.

trackrat59 06-09-2010 08:16 PM

I sent an email to Sirius and they emailed me back. This was their response.

You can still stay on top of all the latest horse racing news and hear
previews of the big upcoming events with a full lineup of TVG shows.
You can listen to Trackside Live, Racing Coast to Coast and Starting
Gate and more.

I just shook my head. I wrote them back and told them that 5 TVG hosts combined don't have as much horse racing knowledge and passion about the sport as Steve Byk has.

I got new-used car last November. It came with a free, life time subscription to Sirius. I thought, gosh, this is lucky. So I started messing around with the radio to see what was on all the channels. I got to 100 and thought, this is all crap anyway. I kept going. When I hit 126 I could not believe what I was hearing. Someone was talking about horse racing. I shouted out loud, "my people!, I've found my people!". So I listened and thought, who is this guy using all these big words? He finally said his name. Steve Byk. When I got home I looked up Steve Bic on the 'puter. Could not find him. I tried Steve Bick. Could not find him either. Ahh, go look on the Sirius site. Oh, it's Byk. Cool. Wondered what kind of name that is.

Since I got my new-used car I've become a much better handicapper. I hit the triple in the Derby and Belmont this year. I've watched the last 51 years of triple crown races and I can't recall a year when I've had this much fun. Prior to the Derby I would go home, feed the critters and then look up Mike Welsch's reports. Took notes and everything. Discovered DerbyTrail.com. and here I am.

Steve I can't thank you enough. You're the best.
Will follow you anywhere;)

We're all in the same boat. Our long drives from work, just longer.
Good Luck Steve.
This is really going to hurt the West Coast.

Any updates or set in stone plans for the show and time?

onebadbeast 06-10-2010 12:14 PM

I MAY MOVE TO BERLIN NOW, TO HEAR THE SHOW FROM 2-5PM:tro:

OldDog 06-10-2010 01:53 PM

Any new news on this?

I only ask because I just went out to move my truck and (of course) my XM was set to 243 from this morning when I was listening to race replays from yesterday. There was some kind of "fight" show on and I turned it off. I came in to check emails and decided to look on XM's channel lineup, and 243 says "More Programs Coming Soon!" Scrolling through the channels I came upon 226 which shows ATR at its regular 4-7 slot, and I got excited. Is it too much to hope that I'll be able to listen this afternoon/evening?

edit: Never mind. It looks like internet streaming and replays for me!

Let's Call Howard and Make a Stink!!

:confused:I kept thinking Steve was just taking a vacation after the Belmont and he would be back in a few days ,well since reading these post I am going to write Sirius and let them know that I'll always support Steve and his sponsors and charities but there is no way I or the 10 to 20 people I know that subscribe to Sirius just for Steve and Howard, can continue the subscription if they don't sign Steve to the deal he wants
I am going to call Howard and see if I can get his audience behind our effort to keep Steve on at 4-7 pm est:confused::mad:

I wonder if Howard's Dad listens to ATR. Bring it up if you somehow get on the air.

joeydb 06-10-2010 07:48 PM

Yeah, Ben Stern goes to Belmont or Aqueduct every day that they race. He's a big racetrack fan...Howard has mentioned it many times on his show.

Coach Pants 06-10-2010 08:39 PM

Yeah but he can't hear thunder so I doubt he listens to the show.
