Even Spence has to agree that the movie was WAY too gay.

:D

I am in no way implying it's a great movie, I just enjoyed the scenery.

I liked the Hangover but it could have been better if the story was told in real time and I thought the characters tried a bit too hard to be funny and overdid it. Certainly not as funny as Road Trip.

I liked the Departed but it was a total copycat of Goodfellas and didnt do that movie justice.

It's a remake of infernal affairs. if you don't mind reading subtitles, watch the original. neither is really derivative of goodfellas.

ray liotta rolls over in goodfella's because he gets busted. and it's just the last 1/4 of the film where that happens. the plotline in infernal affairs/the departed would be derivative if goodfellas started there and also included a mafia mole on the narcotics squad. i don't see the similarities other than they're both mafia movies.

Both mafia movies done by scorsese but thats where it ends. I don't understand the ripoff thing either. But hey...art is about interpretation.

Try Mean Streets as well.

Or if you want the best Scorsese/de niro movie, watch raging bull.

Been wanting to contribute to this.. I won't call my list the '15 Best' of the decade, but will say they were 15, (11 features plus 4 documentaries -- which is probably my favorite film form), that I enjoyed a great deal and believe were among the best of the last 10 years..

13. Sin City
12. Spellbound (D)
11. Bowling for Columbine (D)
10. Casino Royale

Went and saw it yesterday... A really good movie...took some getting time getting use to the 3-D, but the best special effects have ever seen. Worth every penny spent to see it.

RockHardTen1985 02-22-2010 10:26 AM

Shutter Island is really good. LD is my boy. He is legend.

AeWingnut 02-22-2010 12:53 PM

I seldom go to the movies

Roger Dean is thinking about suing Avatar for ripping him off. Heck who didn't they rip off? The only thing good about the movie was the special effects. The message was enough to make you walk out.

miraja2 02-22-2010 12:55 PM

My top ten since 2000:

10) Being John Malkovich
9) The Squid and the Whale
8) Mystic River
7) Match Point
6) Sideways
5) Adaptation
4) Little Children
3) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2) Before Sunset
1) The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

I never really thought about it before, but I guess Charlie Kaufman really is responsible (at least partially) for three of my ten favorite movies in the last decade.

I don't know what message your referring to... Perhaps I was too caught up in the special effects, but I came away feeling like good prevailed over evil.

I LOVED those two movies.

miraja2 02-22-2010 01:40 PM

My top five most overrated movies of the decade:

5) Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (A good movie, but I'm still not sure how this movie won tons of awards despite being the worst offering in the trilogy).

4) Gladiator (Ummm.....okay....what is supposed to be good about this movie?)

3) Michael Clayton (Above average movie that somehow garnered more critical acclaim and box office attendance than it deserved).

2) Avatar (Visually amazing, and it is worth seeing for that, but the script reads like somebody told Cameron to take all of the worst elements of Dances with Wolves and The Matrix and combine them into one movie).

1) Moulin Rouge (One of the worst movies of the decade and yet it somehow made a bunch of money and won a lot of awards. Insane.)

It's the only one I have seen on the list and are you kidding me? I thought that all the coliseum scenes were worth the price of admission alone. I thought that it was overall an excellent movie.

Gaelic Storm 02-22-2010 02:18 PM

The overrated list should include any George Clooney movie after 2000 (especially Michael Clayton) and anything from Jim Carrey after 2001.

Here's my 10 best:
10 Almost Famous
9 Juno (my wife's favorite)
8 Catch Me If you Can
7 Little Children (loved Kelly Leak in that one)
6 The Last King of Scotland (Garlick was great)
5 Blood Diamond
4 Unbreakable
3 Thank You For Smoking
2 Inside Man
1 Slumdog Millionaire

I haven't seen Avatar, but this guys review of it is devasting, and I should add quite hilarious. It's long but well worth it.

Catch Me if You Can and Thank You for Smoking both just missed making my top ten. I think Thank You for Smoking is actually better than Jason Reitman's other recent pictures (Juno and Up in the Air) even though those two received a lot more acclaim. Those two films are really good, but Thank You for Smoking is outstanding.

yes, while he sounds like the guy from Idiocracy that "Not Sure" crashes into. He mostly has the movie down.

I saw your post and watched this movie last night.

The movie both hit and missed with me. First of all, you have to suspend a lot of disbelief. Huge holes in the story such as:

1. Where were the guard towers and riflemen?
2. How was that Jewish kid able to sneak off to the fence every day without anyone seeing him?
3. How was it possible that an 8 year old german boy during the time, not to mention the son of a death camp comandant, not have already been brainwashed?
4. Why were there guards at the front of the house but none to the rear?
5. If he could get in, why couldnt he have just helped get the kid out?
6. Were there no phones or radios between the house where the comandant's office was and the death camp in which he ran? It would seem simple enough to make a call if his son was missing.

Okay. The director did an amazing job of dehumanizing the victims. The best that i have seen in a movie on the subject. And you don't really catch it until after the movie of what he made you feel. By focusing on the boy and his family and their pain and making the plight of the jews mysterious and hidden for much of the movie, you are almost fooled into thinking the real tragedy is what happened to the little german boy. But what about Schmuel and Pavel and the rest of the poor souls that were gassed at the same time? The director makes them almost an after thought until the fade out with the picture of the striped concentration camp pajamas hanging.

That is the brilliance of the movie in my opinion and it made the movie truly unique. For a second, he brought you into the world of a german during that time.

I may need to add Exit through the Gift Shop to this list.
I saw it last night and I think it is absolutely brilliant (and hilarious). I'm not sure if it has been released outside of NYC, LA, and Chicago yet, but if it is playing near you I highly recommend it.
