I think this whole thing was much ado about nothing. I think Palin is happy to put the focus on Letterman and take the focus off what a lousy job she did of raising her daughter (the one who got pregnant at 17).

I dont know... most high schoolers are having sex at 17. I was.. everyone I knew was... and it just got worse with kids younger than me as they got older. there is a big problem and MIDDLE school with kids having sex. Its not like all these parents did a lousy job raising their kids. Shoot, 17 year olds dont listen to there parents anyway!! You just have to hope they are making the right decisions and its important to talk about birth control cause no matter what you want to happen... sex is going to happen.

That could have been Palins problem... preaching abstinence is NEVER going to be the answer, cause kids could care less about that. Teaching safe sex and the dangers of unsafe sex is a MUCH better option...

But I have a hard time blaming Palin or calling her a bad parent because her 17 year old had sex. If that was the case there would be a very small amount of good parents out there.

I agree with you but I have to hold Palin to a higher standard since she is preaching family values and running as a born-again Christian. I think if someone is a serious Christian, they have failed greatly as a parent if their 17 year old daughter gets pregnant.

wonderful-she's running the state, who's running the house? and yes, sometimes kids still run into trouble regardless of a parents' best efforts-but having a mother on the run for months at a time while running for vp, and thrusting young kids into the limelight and dog eat dog world of politics can't possibly be in the best interests of those kids.

LOL your funny , my mom got preggo at 17 in the early 60's , her mom didnt work , she never spent a day at the babysitter or anywhere else , went to church every Sunday , was an A student and somehow and I dont know how managed to get knocked up. Boys and girls will do what they want when they are out of your sight , I think its most likely you never did anything that your parents didnt like when they werent around , you little angel you :) .

i LOVE when people give an example of one who doesn't fit a scenario as being proof that the scenario as a whole is incorrect.

as for the four of us kids, none of us got knocked up, had kids out of wedlock, etc. weren't angels by any means...

my kids aren't angels either-and i've got two out and one to go. no kiddies running around as yet.

I should say that I partially agree with you. I agree with you that tons of 17 year old girls are having sex. But I disagree that we have to accept this as something that is inevitable that can't be prevented. I think that if you teach your kids about the dangers of sex from the time they are very young and you absolutely stress the importance of abstinence, I think it is quite realistic to expect your kids to stay abstinent (at least while they are living in your house). Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this is easy. I think this needs to be something that you constantly drum into your kids' heads from the time they are very young. If this is something that is important to you as a parent, then you need to make it a priority. It is something you would need to constantly talk to your kids about from the time they are very young.

Yep and Yep

It doesn't help much that clothing manufacturers have basically unleashed sex on every female. What I would give for 17 year old girls to look the way they look now when I was 17

I wasn't brought up as a Christian. I was not taught abstinence. But I'll tell you something that was drummed into my head from the time I was a little kid. Really in this day of age, you can do this with your daughter and then the time comes when she's 17, has a huge crush on a cute boy... He likes her too and says "I really love you".... and she knows all her friends are doing it so it doesnt seem as much of a big deal, and she feels "left out" in a strange way (that feeling does happen to teenage girls who are restraining). But the guy loves her so its okay! 10 years of preaching abstinence down the drain...

i don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, and i understand about no other option. what i should have written is having kids 'without a commitment'. the children should always be FIRST when the decision is made to have them. too often people only think of themselves when they say they want a child-they don't think about what's best for the child they are bringing into the world.

so glad i only had one daughter. but i told my kids all the dangers of unprotected sex, and all the responsibilities and consequences they would have to deal with if they engaged in it. i think too many parents just say 'don't do it'-admirable, but short sighted. why shouldn't they do it? just saying you'll catch something or you could get pregnant isn't enough. besides, what kid doesn't think they aren't bullet proof? pregnancy is temporary, that kid is permanent. i told them that i'm sure their future (hopefully far away) offspring would rather be raised by an employed adult, not a still immature teen.
i told the two boys that girls are sneaky and conniving, and are to be avoided-but i said the same to my daughter about guys. whether it worked or not i can't say for absolute certainty-but i'm not a grandma either...

the best thing i think that happened to my youngest is his best friend and g/f got pregnant. he's seeing first hand what is going on with that kid-he doesn't like it, and sees that-gasp-mom was right about it being a life changing event.

besides, didn't palin attend a rally where people started shouting threats of violence, and she just smirked? and now she takes a joke and tries to twist it for political points-she's the one linking this joke with the 14 year old, letterman meant it for the over 18 baby mama.

She's nothing if not an opportunist.

Can't wait for 2012.

"perhaps palin should have spent more time with her daughters and less time on her political career, then they wouldn't be fodder for jokes right now."

that's what i said. had their mother not been in politics, they wouldn't be in the limelight, and being used as weapons against their mother- both by the left, and by comedians. they also wouldn't be used as pawns by their mother for that matter. they could be normal kids-some of who do end up pregnant. you think it's in her kids best interest to have her gone for days, weeks at a time, with kids ranging in age from 17 to infancy? that's good for a child? a juvenile, a teen?

i also said "and yes, sometimes kids still run into trouble regardless of a parents' best efforts"

but i do stand by what i said, that her and most kids would do far better if their parents gave them more of their attention, instead of the kids playing second fiddle to a career.

They do have a father dont they ? Letterman was an ass for saying anything about her kids period. We can agree to disagree.

they sure do. but girls of 13 and 17 need their mother, just like boys that age need their father.

but yeah, letterman and the others probably should stick to the adults.

women are holding more and more higher positions in the workforce today (corporate and public) - to that extent family life is going to be different that what it was when you were a kid.

people are having to work in some cases 60+ hrs a week each just to afford a moderate lifesytle for their families today - and it takes 2 incomes just to make ends meet in certain parts of the country .... the days of the stay a the home mother are over except for the really really rich in this country
