Can you honestly say that through their 4yo seasons he was any faster than this guy?

I'm not disagreeing he moved the horse up, I just don't think the horse was that good and am surprised Drugs liked him.

He's had an irrational love of RHT since the day he debuted. I never understood it either and it's best to just humor him.

For the record I was just busting chops before.

It was intended to show that he was not some bigtime overrated horse.

He did survive Orman's handling of him and go undefeated in four Graded Stake races ranging from distances of 7 furlongs to 10 furlongs before retiring with an injury.

In those four races, he beat name horses like Saint Liam, Lava Man, Borrego, Choctaw Nation, Roman Ruler, Imperialisim etc.

He had enough raw speed to win sprinting on debut with a 101 Beyer - he won a Grade 1 sprinting against the grain and off the layoff at SA. He certainly had stamina as well.

Probably would have been an awfully good synthetic track horse with the big time turf pedigree he had ... excellent turf sire & dam was a champ in Europe.

Plus, he was one of about 74 different horses where Gary Stevens publicly said "this is the best horse I ever rode."

You forgot the part where he lost to My Snookie's Boy....badly.

Perhaps.

He wasn't a very good shipper. Big horse, with a big attitude, who always held up the start.

Though, he only shipped in his races for Orman and not Mandella. So there could be something to that.

If you judge him strictly on his California form and disregard his 3 long trips East ... he's a pretty solid and consistant horse.

NTamm1215 03-25-2009 08:32 AM

When speaking of horses who won GI races from 7 to 10 furlongs, I think Congaree is largely forgotten. His game also traveled, but when he threw in a bad one, it sure was ugly.

A lot of people had an irrational fascination with Rock Hard Ten back in 2005; I don't DrugSy was alone in that regard. Why the hate for Rock Hard Ten though? There are worse GI winners out there, far worse.

Congaree was certainly a better horse than RHT. He was pretty close to unbeatable when he was at his absolute best.

No hate here, but because of your first statement, I think he belongs on the list of Most Overated Horses on the Internet, maybe not on the top, but he belongs. The media was a bit out of control in regards to him too.

All the media ever talked about was Smarty Jones if I remember.

That year was definitely high on dramatics. You don't recall the big black horse that was shut out of the Derby and was going to give Smarty all he could handle? It was a David and Golith story for equines. LOL

I bet him big in the Preakness - he was 7/1

I couldn't believe how many people came up to me and told me "great pick" and thanked me after he finished 2nd beaten a pole.

I should have been mocked by everyone - but I was being celebrated for talking them into a $25 exacta.

hoovesupsideyourhead 03-25-2009 09:07 AM

gary stevens likes rht and pimps him in his stud ad..

Sightseek 03-25-2009 09:12 AM

There have been some fantastic Preaknesses, but you couldn't pay me to attend another one.

The Indomitable DrugS 03-25-2009 09:19 AM

I loved going to the Preakness.

Got to make a few homeless friends and do some good eating at the Inner Harbor.

Got to see some boobies in the infield.

Got to see the ghetto on the walk back to where the car was parked.

blackthroatedwind 03-25-2009 09:57 AM

I love going to the Preakness. Missed it last year but will be there this year.

slotdirt 03-25-2009 10:02 AM

There were as many dummies with some sort of innunendo-filled Rock Hard Ten t-shirt at the 2005 Belmont as there were Smarty Jones fans. Well, maybe not quite as many, but you get my point.

Really? I thought we had a great time (other than Curlin winning).

I've been to 12... it's my favorite day of the year.

Curlin :D

It was fun, but there are a lot of other tracks/big races I'd go to first. I guess I just thought there were better boobies in the Derby infield.

My boobie meter gives the Preakness the edge... in a photo finish. :D

I've also only ventured into the infield ONCE in 3 trips to the Derby and 5 trips to the Oaks. Maybe I should do some "research" this year :p

For posterity's sake of course.

I asked your significant other what you two were doing this year. Depending on how expensive the saddle I'm looking to buy ends up being I might head over to KY...I've already taken Thursday and Friday off.
