Woods plans Knight's retirement, but looks ahead with Decision

MURRAY BELL

(excerpt)

Sean Woods was unbeaten after two races with horses at polar-opposite ends of the experience spectrum, leaving the British trainer with two very different sets of future plans.
Woods was chuffed that First Knight, a loyal servant to the yard, had been able to land the opening race under an aggressive Brett Prebble ride and is now recommending a well-earned retirement for the nine-year-old.

"He's done a fantastic job and we're very proud of him," Woods said. "Today was his 111th start, it's a Hong Kong record number of starts and I think this would be a very nice way to finish it off. That will be my recommendation to the owners [the Eighth Floor Syndicate] and I hope they agree to it.

"We'll ensure he goes to a good home, in either Australia or New Zealand, and I hope the Jockey Club sees fit to give him a public farewell because he's been a wonderfully sound, competitive horse for a long period of time." :)

First Knight's victory in the Class Five over 1,400 metres was his ninth win and he's banked HK$4.4 million. He's also landed eight seconds, five thirds and 11 fourths across a long career with just two trainers - David Hill originally, then transferring to Woods after Hill quit Hong Kong and moved to Singapore in the summer of 2005. First Knight debuted on May 25, 2002, in a griffin race over 1,000m. He was handled by Eddie Lai Wai-ming and ran last of 14 runners at 82-1. His four seasons with Hill provided three wins, but Woods has extracted the other six over the past three years and two months.

Felix Coetzee requests withdrawal of his licence

17 December 2008

Club Jockey Felix Coetzee has submitted a written request for his Club Jockey's Licence to be withdrawn by the Licensing Committee after the race meeting scheduled to be conducted at Sha Tin Racecourse on Saturday, 20 December 2008.

In his correspondence, Jockey Coetzee explained that his family did not return to Hong Kong from South Africa at the commencement of the current 2008/2009 season as his children were obliged to remain in South Africa for the purpose of furthering their education.

Jockey Coetzee advised that it had been his intention to remain in Hong Kong until the conclusion of the current racing season, however, he has found it increasingly difficult to focus on race riding without the support of his family being domiciled in Hong Kong.

Jockey Coetzee's request for his licence to be withdrawn will be placed before the Licensing Committee as a matter of priority for their consideration.

Furious French ace calls it quits
Saint-Martin says career in HK is over after ban

MURRAY BELL

An irate Eric Saint-Martin declared last night he was finished with Hong Kong racing after stipendiary stewards slammed him with an improper riding charge and a two-month suspension of his licence.
Saint-Martin, 43, had intended retiring from the saddle at the end of the season anyway but has been enjoying a purple patch of form, making yesterday's actions and his subsequent outburst all the more surprising.

Saint-Martin stormed out of Sha Tin at 6.40pm last night after private discussions with stewards' panel member Philip Dingwall, but repeated that he was "finished" in Hong Kong.

"They have given me two months, they obviously do not want me here," Saint-Martin said. "If they don't want me here, I don't need to be here. I am finished - I will be leaving Hong Kong tomorrow. You can put that in the paper - I am leaving."

Saint-Martin and seven-pound claimer Paul Lo Pak-hin had engaged in a barging match down the back straight in the third event at Sha Tin, the Sai Wan Shan Handicap (1,650m), in which the Frenchman had handled Chater De Lago for trainer David Ferraris.

Lo was steering his mount Storm's Destiny in across Chater De Lago and the interference continued for about 100 metres until Saint-Martin apparently became exasperated and defended himself by pushing Lo out of the way with his elbow.

Lo retaliated by continuing to push an inward course on his mount and eventually raised his right elbow and pushed into the neck of Chater De Lago.

Stewards spent much of the afternoon dealing with the matter but Saint-Martin showed his class, riding a superbly judged race to win the feature event, the Gome Cup (race eight), on topweight Syllabus and completing a double by landing the last for John Moore on Rewarding Star.

Saint-Martin pleaded not guilty to the improper riding charge and argued vigorously against the panel taking action against him, but stewards found he had crossed the line.

"Bearing in mind jockey Saint-Martin's prior record in matters of this kind, he was suspended from riding in races until February 23, with immediate effect," said chief stipe Jamie Stier.

Lo, who had never previously transgressed beyond normal careless riding infringements, was also charged with improper riding. He pleaded guilty and was suspended for eight meetings.

Last season, Saint-Martin was also suspended on a improper riding charge for deliberately steering his mount into a horse ridden by Terry Wong Chi-wai after the winning post.

When licences were issued for 2008-09 at the end of last season, Saint-Martin was given his with a warning - that a repeat offence could see his situation reviewed. He is understood to have given a verbal commitment to never re-offend.

Saint-Martin has now been suspended four times for improper riding in a Hong Kong career that began in 1982.

His double yesterday took him to 19 wins for the season and equal fourth place on the jockeys' premiership, while his career tally in Hong Kong moved to 424.

Stier showed the patrol footage to the media last night and said that there was no excuse for a jockey taking matters into his own hands and elbowing an errant fellow jockey out of the way.

"We do not accept that he was in danger of being brought down by interference, and the correct course of action should have been to hold his position and leave the punishment [of jockey Lo] to the stewards," Stier added.

Ballad of the Fantasy boys...

8 January 2009

The Stewards received stable transfer applications on 5 January 2009 for SUPER FANTASY and WHATAFANTASY to be transferred from Trainer D E Ferraris to Trainer Y S Tsui. The horses are both owned by Mr Lam Tai Fai & Mrs Martha Lam So Lai Ching.

Upon being informed of the intended transfers, Mr. Ferraris expressed to the Stewards his disappointment that these horses were being transferred from his stable. Mr Ferraris has advised Mr Lam he does not wish to continue to train ULTRA FANTASY and DOUBLE FANTASY, horses in which Mr. Lam also has an ownership interest. Mr Ferraris also advised the Stewards of his disappointment at these stable transfers and that he no longer wished to continue to train ULTRA FANTASY and DOUBLE FANTASY.

Under normal circumstances permission would not be granted by the Stewards for DOUBLE FANTASY, which was successful in its most recent race start on 4 January 2009, to be transferred to another stable. It is the policy of the Stewards that last start winners would not be normally permitted to change stables during the racing season. However, considering Mr Ferraris does not wish to continue training DOUBLE FANTASY, the Stewards have, in the circumstances, given approval for the horse, together with ULTRA FANTASY to be transferred to the stable of Trainer P F Yiu.

Outstanding entries pour in for 2009 Asian Mile Challenge
(HKJC)

Very strong interest has emerged from many of the highest profile names in world racing for this year's US$10.5m Asian Mile Challenge, the richest prize the sport has to offer for a single horse.

A record total of 382 entries were received for the four-legged Asian Mile Challenge which begins with the Futurity Stakes in Melbourne on 28 February. These nominations came from horses trained in 21 different racing jurisdictions and include a highest-ever tally of 51 individual Gr.1 winners.

Three of last year's AMC winners are among the headline names present: Jay Peg, the US$5m Dubai Duty Free champion from South Africa; Hong Kong's Good Ba Ba, the Champions Mile hero and the world's leading Older Turf Miler in 2008 after a repeat win in the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong Mile; and the great Japanese mare Vodka, a tearaway winner of the Yasuda Kinen, the final leg of the series in June.

Other topliners include Weekend Hussler, Australia's Horse of the Year for 2007/08 and a seven-time Gr.1 victor; Archipenko and Eagle Mountain, international winners at the highest level in 2008 for trainer Mike de Kock; British trained Paco Boy, rated the equal of Good Ba Ba last year during his three-year-old campaign; America's former Breeders' Cup Mile champion Kip Deville; and Daiwa Scarlet, the first female to win the Arima Kinen in Japan for 37 years.

Prize-money and bonuses worth US$10.5m are on offer. Three AMC wins will net a bonus of US$2m with a bonus pool of US$1m credited to the winners of two legs.

Winning trainers will be factored directly into the bonus structure this year to encourage a wider spread of competition. Trainers of the winners of two legs will receive US$250,000 with the remaining US$750,000 going to the owner. Should a horse succeed in three legs, the trainer's reward will double to US$500,000 with the owner netting US$1.5m.

With horses not having to compete in every leg of the AMC to be eligible for a bonus, the Challenge promises exciting racing action from some of the world's best milers at four outstanding racecourses spread across the Asian Racing Federation region.

In the event anyone follows Macau, is Warcat still in training? Thanks in advance (and no, not expecting a huge response here but figured I'd ask).

Don't all answer at once. :( :D

Okay well Warcat is in the entries for the Hong Kong Macau Trophy so it's all good.

Feel better, Lucky Bo Bo and Super Genki.

Good luck to King of Fish in R4 (for my friend Chestnut Gal) and Amo(cause I love him:D ) in R8.

Pick(s) of the day for Wednesday, happiest place on earth (Happy Valley)... :)

Wait for Me in R6

They should both be at really good odds.

Come home safe everyone.

SCMP trackwork notes...

RACE NINE, RATED Terms (G2), 1,800 METRES
Thumbs Up impressed in his final piece on Thursday and hit the line with relish over the final 200m under Christophe Soumillon. Unique Jewellery has had several steady Size-style gallops and also had a quiet trial last Thursday under Douglas Whyte. More Bountiful is the ultimate professional and has done nothing to suggest he cannot continue his strong vein of form. Roma Pegasus has been the improver, going ahead in leaps and bounds since his unlucky run in the Classic Mile. Redragtoabull has gone well in recent weeks and his final piece under Weichong Marwing was excellent.
