While below par for a Grade 1 winner - she was pretty ok now that I dug up her PP's.

Linny 03-25-2008 06:16 PM

If they had more 12f races, she's have been OK. A huevo was very fast when he was right and on his game.

Huh? A Huevo was very good when right..

What about Arcangues? Can't recall if he did anything besides the BCC win.

I think a bad back was his undoing. If I remotely remember correctly.

I still don't know what went wrong there.
Him finishing 16th sure looked like the lock of the century.

While not exactly the worst....the dams of Rags To Riches and Discreet Cat weren't so hot....

Other than PD's one insane performance in the slop anyway.

Pt's Grey Eagle (Ancient Title)
Scrimshaw (Lexington)

Pure As Gold (Bing Crosby)
Forest Secrets (Acorn)
Delegant (San Juan Capistrano)
Elmhurst (BC Sprint)
Mill Native (Arlington Million)
Caltech (Budweiser International)
Success Express (BC Juvenile)
Wild Syn (Blue Grass)
Big Ten (Californian)
The Groom Is Red (Champagne)
Tri To Watch (Champagne)
Gold Fever (NYRA Mile)

The Lexington at Keeneland, the Californian at Hollywood, and the Hollywood Turf Cup (too numerous to count), seem like big offenders.

Scrimshaw could actually really run.

He was one of DWL's finest pieces of pure butchery.

I think he had a bad throat so I doubt he would have done much despite Lukas. I know his first couple of sprints were pretty sharp, including a victory over subsequent stakes horses Eye of the Tiger and Ghostzapper in a SA allowance.

You reminded me of Going Wild, though, and Ten Cents A Shine, horses of (looking to the sky above with my left hand at chest level) promise...without the necessary means...necessary means...of a higher education.

Best Pal, Olympio, and Lite Light were all in that race.

I think your buzzer statement is a bit over the top. I was there and watched race from apron. Fastest horse won, period.

Shippers like Best Pal from California did not like hot, humid conditions that afternoon. Free Spirits Joy was well acclimated to ambient conditions. FSJ was Louisiana-bred based at LaD. Also, it has been documented by others, such as Steve Davidowitz in his last edition of Betting Thoroughbreds, that track was packed, rock hard, superhighway along rail. Another testament is final time 2:00.4. Atypically fast when compared with previous 1-1/4 mile editions of Super Derby in that era.

As for Borel, Boo just schooled out-of-towners with his "home court" advantage of knowing that rail was lightning fast that day. Jockeys are like shippers because sometimes they don't like new surrondings.

Now, I do concur that FSJ is one of the worst Grade I winners ever.

I think the most interesting thing in Better than Honour's PP's is La Ville Rouge. I'm sure there's not too many MSW's which featured mulitple dams of Triple Crown winners...

Indian Charlie 03-25-2008 10:16 PM

how can anyone not think ever a friend is an all time worst grade 1 winner?

Probably because he will be short odds to repeat his Kilroe effort in the Shoemaker.

dominican and ordway (druggieS favorite horse).

i'll cut wild syn a break because of his hard life at stud.

Action This Day...

Ruler's Court...

Indian Charlie 03-26-2008 02:20 AM

as far as fillies go, hollywood glitter has to be up there with sutra.

and i most strongly disagree with ruler's court. he suffered a bad injury after his devastating norfolk win, which was just a thing of beauty.

i think that horse was going to be special. oh well.

here's a link to his 15 or so length win in 141.1, a stakes record, in 2003.

yeah, it's pretty well established now that they are idiots with their 2 and 3 year old american based horses.

Because Sinister Minister and the horse that won last year's Blue Grass are worse.

paisjpq 03-26-2008 01:09 PM

he's not the worst but he is my personal favorite.....Court Folly:D

Merlinsky 03-26-2008 11:02 PM

Is there a Saarland fan club here that's blocking that nomination? I was looking up a couple I remembered and while he only managed a G3, how 'bout another Lukas nominee, Buckle Down Ben. For the G2 threshold there's Fifty Stars and Spanish Chestnut. Not that they weren't once interesting but they're one hit wonders really, that's all. Does anybody care to sing the praises of Onion?

PS. I happen to enjoy Wonder Lady Anne L to a degree. She did beat Wait a While for a G2 and Pine Island for her G1. Of course not the fastest races on the planet but oh well..I'm rooting for Real Quiet as a sire so it's hard for me to vote against her.
